Food and non-food needs

The current food and non-food needs of the Franklin Food Pantry can be viewed in the document below:

Franklin Food Pantry - JanFeb 2011 Needs

These items can be left at the Food Pantry during their open hours (Tue - Fri, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM). If the items won't freeze in the cold, they can also be left in the large wooden box on the porch.

  1. Dang, I forgot to take freezing temps into consideration at my last drop-off. I hope nothing in the bag froze!

I'm a little perturbed by the requests for canned pasta, boxed rice side dishes, etc. Those don't seem like the best sources of nutrition, and are more expensive pound-for-pound than staples. But I supposed I'm biased because I know how to cook and make an effort to keep pre-made "food" out of my house.

  2. Michelle, I understand your desire for more of a healthy food request. We are heading in that direction. The Food Pantry instituted a farmer's market on Monday's last year to distribute the fresh produce we were able to obtain. We are working as part of the Community Gardens project to further that effort this year. By re-doing the Food Pantry website, we intend to incorporate a blog which will also feature healthy recipes. You also give me an idea that we can solicit recipes from the community (like yourself) as well as from other food and health writers. Thanks!

  3. Thanks Steve. Sounds like you guys are doing a great job. And wow, I had just been toying with the notion of offering the food pantry some recipes. :) Would you be interested?

I don't know if you are aware, but my husband is involved with the Community Gardens project. I'll be doing my best to help out by holding out the home fort while he continues to help with that!

  4. Michelle, The Food Pantry has much work to do but I think we are headed in the right direction and will get there. I am aware of the work that Chris and the others on the Community Garden are doing. All goodness!

And yes, I would be interested in recipes for the new blog. I know you have some family priorities but anything you can do on that front will be appreciated. Actually, if you want to try a recipe in advance of the new blog being ready, we could post it here and help build interest.

  5. Sure thing Steve! I have some things I cook regularly, like pumpkin french toast or chicken soup, which I don't typically measure but are easy to make and use basic ingrediants. I'll spend some time documenting (and measuring) and then I'll pass the recipies along to you. :) Thanks for the opportunity to help!

By the way, can you tell me the address for the food pantry again? Thanks. . .
