"For the uninitiated, football can look like just an epic exercise in repetition, rife with specialized jargon and crowded with on-field roles -- quarterback, cornerback, center, fullback, running back, wide receiver, left guard, right guard, defensive tackle, defensive end, linebacker, tight end. 
Players line up on each side of the ball on a giant grid. The ball is put into play. The players dive into each other. They jostle for the ball - sometimes it goes soaring, but mostly it falls, the players pile up in a cringe-worthy heap. Whistles are blown. Coaches and referees are consulted. 
And it starts again."
