Dean College’s President Inducted Into The Martin Luther King, Jr. Collegium Of Scholars At Morehouse College

Dean College is proud to announce that our president, Kenneth Elmore, J.D., has been inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College

The collegium is part of Morehouse’s College of Ministers & Laity and is named for Dr. King, who graduated from the school in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Collegium inductees are individuals who have “demonstrated and are evolving toward great achievement in their chosen vocation; have a profound commitment to their community and society, the planet and the cosmos; and are living their lives according to a high standard of cosmopolitan ethical principles.”

“My life’s work has been focused on breaking the barriers of divisiveness by pushing communities to discover their shared humanity and to foster meaningful, authentic friendships,” said President Elmore. “That is why being inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College is so very meaningful to me. Dr. King was the epitome of a remarkable leader and selfless servant, and I pledge to continue his legacy as a member of the MLK Collegium of Scholars.”

The induction ceremony took place on Thursday, April 11, 2024, in the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel. This year’s ceremony theme was “Saving Democracy While Thriving in the Wake of Cosmic Trauma.” The collegium recognized Elmore as an academic and scholar who is “committed to research, writing, teaching and mentoring a wide variety of disciplines and contexts that promote and give support to the work of peace through moral cosmopolitan social responsibility.”

Elmore was nominated for this honor by Dr. Keith Magee who said, “The reason I nominated President Elmore is due to his commitment to social justice and what it has represented throughout his professional career. His leadership in higher education has been impeccable and he has used his business acumen, training, and understanding of family and community to represent the best of all of us. He has certainly upheld the legacy of Dr. King who understood the value of us not being judged by the color of our skin but by the content of our character. And equally important, President Elmore embraces Dr. King's words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere and has used his platform in higher education to ensure quality access to education for all."

Elmore is the 14th president of Dean College. He has more than three decades of higher education experience as an accomplished leader, connector and community builder. Throughout his career, Elmore has been an institutional catalyst dedicated to making and keeping the common ground compelling. He is committed to public engagement and the pluralistic ideal.

Elmore has co-led efforts to facilitate free speech and expression climates – to expose, debate and wrestle with ideas, understand our bias and encourage critical engagement. Early in his career as a dean of students, Elmore pioneered a long-standing discussion series – Coffee and Conversation – to foster an inclusive atmosphere through listening and idea exchange.

Throughout his career, Elmore has cultivated an institutional mindset that ensures traditional non-academic departments understand that the student experience is multi-dimensional and not solely about social integration and skill-based experiences “outside the classroom” to achieve better student outcomes.

Elmore has received several honors and professional distinctions, including being named a Pillar of the Profession by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and a Diamond Honoree by the American College Personnel Association – College Student Educators International (ACPA) for outstanding work in student affairs and services, and in higher education. In 2019, Elmore was selected by the Mayor of Boston to deliver the annual, historic Fourth of July oration at Faneuil Hall.

President Elmore is a lifelong advocate, teacher and learner who believes in the potential of students and the value of education to change lives. He is a graduate of Brown University, Boston University, and New England Law | Boston.

Dean College will be the home of the first Ruth Solomon Symposium - June 21 & 22, 2024

Dean College will be the home of the first Ruth Solomon Symposium, a multidisciplinary educational event designed for physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, allied health professionals, dance instructors, and dancers. The two-day symposium will be held at Dean College in Franklin, MA on June 21 and June 22, 2024. The theme of the event is "The Science Behind the Dancer: Optimizing Dancer Health," and will provide an opportunity to learn and review the fundamentals of care and instruction throughout the dancer's life.

"Dancers are elite athletes and an important portion of our students' training here at Dean focuses on prevention, because an injury can have a significant impact on their performance, careers, and mental health," said Marc Arentsen, Dean of the Joan Phelps Palladino School of Dance. "Empowering teachers, health practitioners, and dance professionals in this space with new knowledge and strategies to safeguard well-being and longevity in this demanding art form, makes educational symposiums such as this critically important. We look forward to welcoming everyone to our beautiful campus in June to participate in this tremendous opportunity to learn, exchange knowledge, share experience, and support those who live to dance."

Dean College and Boston Children's Hospital will hold a symposium in June designed to ensure the health of dancers.

Data from the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Information Network concludes that dance is the most physically demanding job in the country. The research looked at five types of physical activity — dynamic strength, explosive strength, time spent running or walking, stamina, and trunk strength. Studies have also shown that 80 percent of dancers incur at least one injury a year that affects their ability to perform, compared to a 20 percent injury rate for rugby or football players. Dean is one of only a dozen colleges in the U.S. that has a full-time certified athletic trainer on staff, dedicated to the performing arts.

Boston Children's Hospital has a long-standing collaboration with both the School of the Arts and the School of Dance at Dean that includes a medical affiliate agreement; standing orders for licensed certified athletic trainers to provide onsite injury care and prevention; nutrition talks provided by Boston Children's registered dietitians; and dance affiliate referral privileges. Additionally, Dean's dedicated performing arts athletic training facility hosts monthly clinics staffed by Boston Children's physicians, and for even more hands-on support, Boston Children's clinicians often join Dean's performing arts athletic training staff backstage during dance concerts.

"Without question, dancers are deserving of high-level medical care and injury prevention support," said Amanda Donahue, Dean's Performing Arts Athletic Training Program Coordinator. "Over the past decade, we have been able to expand this assistance for our performing artists through our collaboration with Boston Children's, and this partnership has been instrumental in providing specialized performing arts medical care to our students."

Upon completion of the symposium, participants will be able to:
  • Identify risk factors and strategies to optimize dancer health and wellness;
  • Translate dance medicine research to clinical practice and dancer training;
  • Understand the multidisciplinary approach to the developing dancer;
  • Incorporate nutrition and mental health in the assessment, treatment, and training of dancers;
  • Understand innovative strategies for evaluating and treating dance related injuries including dynamic MSK ultrasound, EPAT, and orthobiologics; and
  • Discuss and demonstrate various styles of dance and recommendations for injury treatment and prevention.
"There has been a noticeable gap in translating dance medicine research from the clinical practice into the dance studio," said Bridget Quinn, MD of Boston Children's Hospital's Orthopedics and Sports Medicine department. "The Ruth Solomon Symposium has been created to try to bridge this gap by bringing together the physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and dancers to look at the current research and standard of care and to develop practical tools to improve our dancers' health and wellness."

The symposium has been named for Ruth Solomon (1935-2023), who was a recognized professional modern dancer, choreographer, and international teacher in academia. The published author of many scientific articles, books, and research studies centering on dance medicine, Ruth volunteered for 39 annual three-month residencies under the direction of Dr. Lyle Micheli at the Division of Sports Medicine at Boston Children's. Here she conducted several major dance medicine studies. In 2010 she was named Honorary Fellow of the Division of Sports Medicine at Boston Children's. She was also elected Fellow of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS) and was given an IADMS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.

Pre-registration for the symposium is required and costs $100 to $300, depending on the participant's professional accreditation.

Why have multiple calendars?
There is a Cultural events calendar upon which other community events are layered to create the Community calendar.

Respectfully, the Library and Senior Center calendars are too full of events to include all their events so we tend to focus on the major events. Town and School meetings are also kept separate. Links for all the calendars are shared here:

"SHE LOVES ME" scheduled for performance by Dean Feb 28 through March 3

SHE LOVES ME

Book by Joe Masteroff.   Music by Jerry Bock.   Lyrics by Sheldon Harnick

An intimate and touching show perfect for the Dean College Main Stage! SHE LOVES ME was nominated for five Tony Awards in 1964. The 1993 Broadway revival won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival of a Musical and the 1994 Critics Circle Award for Best Musical.

Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, SHE LOVES ME is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old-world elegance. The Mikos Lazlos play Parfuemerie, on which it is based, has inspired many adaptations, including the beloved film You've Got Mail starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

The New York Times wrote, "This musical is remarkably generous to all its performers: a half-dozen supporting characters are given show stoppers, too." A heart-warming show that is marvelous for February in Franklin.

Please note: Dean College welcomes children and families to all of our performances. However, infants and children under 2 years of age are not allowed in the theatre, and children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. All patrons must have their own ticketed seats; lap sitting is not permitted. Only ADA-certified service animals are allowed in the theatre.
