“Would some kids be ready to vote at 16? Maybe”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"When Concord-Carlisle High School senior Una Oljaca visited the Statehouse last spring, she and fellow senior Gretchen Carr had a chance to see where legislators voted, the hearing room where several bills are brought up each day and some of the offices where representatives work.

But the day was about much more than simply taking a tour.

Oljaca and Carr were there to testify alongside state Rep. Tami Gouveia, D-Acton, in support of a bill to allow 17-year-olds to vote in municipal elections in Concord.

The issue is complicated, with engaged teens on one side wanting a place at the table when it comes to electing local and national leaders and adults on the other side not so sure a 16-year-old is experienced enough to make such an important decision."

“We need purchase, possession and use laws, but no one wants to talk about it.”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"The effort to increase the tobacco sales age limit to 21 years will undoubtedly cut into the revenue of convenience stores, including the 7-Eleven in Quincy that Dennis Lane has owned for 44 years.
The loss would be unfortunate for business, he said, but it’s not why he’s against increasing the age.
“Raising age limits redefines the age that somebody becomes an adult,” said Lane, who doesn’t smoke. “If you’re adult enough to pick up a rifle and protect this country, then you’re obviously adult enough to make the decision about whether or not to smoke.”
As Massachusetts inches closer to becoming one of a handful of states in which - like alcohol - you must be at least 21 years old to buy a pack of cigarettes, debate has ensued related to health, personal freedom and shared responsibility."

"raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21"

The Milford Daily News reports that the Board of Health while revising the local health regulations is also considering raising the age limit to buy tobacco products.
Franklin Health Director David McKearney said in an email Wednesday that the town’s proposed regulation "is very similar to the town of Needham's at this moment."
On what drove his department to draft new regulations, McKearney said, "Our tobacco regs are not very comprehensive presently."
Though he would not discuss the specifics of the regulations, McKearney said that he wanted to add controls for e-cigarettes and inexpensive flavored cigars. And he will consider banning smoking in membership clubs, which are exempted in the state’s Smoke-Free Workplace Law.
