Alston and Asmath "Bowl for a Goal"

Carly Alston and Farley Asmath from Franklin, MA joined the New England Revolution at their fifth annual Bowl for a Goal presented by Arbella Insurance on Wednesday, August 21 at Splitsville Luxury Lanes at Patriot Place to support Special Olympics Massachusetts. Carly and Farley spent the evening bowling and spending time with Revs Players and their fellow Special Olympic teammates.

The players and coaching staff joined Special Olympics MA athletes and Revs supporters on the lanes for bowling, and a full night of entertainment, trivia, photos and autographs. All profits from the evening, including ticket sales as well as the evening’s silent auction and raffle, benefited Special Olympics Massachusetts.

In the five years of the event they have raised over $300,000 through Bowl for a Goal. The relationship with the organization extends well beyond the annual fundraising event. The two organizations have once again teamed up for a full summer of events aimed to promote an environment of inclusivity and friendly competition through the power of sports.

New England Revolution Announce Fifth Annual "Bowl for a Goal" Presented by Arbella Insurance for Aug 21, 2019

The New England Revolution Charitable Foundation's hallmark annual charity event – Bowl for a Goal presented by Arbella Insurance (#BowlforaGoal) – will return for a fifth year on Wednesday, August 21 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM ET at Splitsville Luxury Lanes in Patriot Place.

Bowl for a Goal provides fans with the opportunity to spend an evening alongside Revolution players, coaches, on-air talent, and local celebrities. All profits from the evening benefit Special Olympics Massachusetts in its mission to provide year-round sports training and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. General admission tickets are now on sale for $35 and may be purchased online here using the promo code "BOWL".

"Bowl for a Goal is one of the most special evenings of the year for me and the entire club, as we have the rare opportunity to bring the entire Revolution family together under one roof to celebrate a wonderful organization, Special Olympics Massachusetts," said Revolution President Brian Bilello. "We are fortunate to have such great partners in Special Olympics and Arbella Insurance, without whose support this event would not be the success it has been for the previous four years. We look forward to another great night and a successful season ahead for the Unified team."

The 2019 season also marks the fifth year of the Revolution's Special Olympics Unified team, which sees more than a dozen athletes with and without intellectual disabilities sign contracts with the Revolution, interact and train with first-team players, and play in a pair of matches -- away against D.C. United on July 12, and home at Gillette Stadium against New York City FC on Sept. 29. The Unified team's season kicked off on March 31 with an open clinic in Foxborough, followed by the team's signing day at Gillette Stadium on May 6.

"Special Olympics Massachusetts along with the New England Revolution have made a tremendous impact on children and young adults with intellectual disabilities," said Gayle O'Connell, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of the Arbella Insurance Group. "This is our fifth year supporting Bowl for a Goal and it's incredible to see how much this event has grown. We're thrilled to be able to continue our longstanding partnership."

Emceed by 98.5 The Sports Hub's Rob 'Hardy' Poole (@Hardy985), the event will feature music and entertainment provided by Boston's own DJ Roy Barboza (@DJRoyBarboza). For more than 15 years, DJ Roy Barboza has been entertaining area listeners with his eclectic blend of hip-hop, R&B, reggae, and many other styles. DJ Barboza is currently the Music Director at HOT 96.9 FM in Boston, and can be heard on HOT 96.9's Morning Grind, Throwback Lunch, and Rush Hour, among other programs.

In addition to the live music entertainment, food, and drinks, Bowl for a Goal will also feature a silent auction and raffle with a wide range of experiences and exclusive memorabilia available, including the following:

"Salvation is in the cards for the former Ficco’s Bowladrome and, appropriately, it is coming at the hands of a church. 

New England Chapel, a vibrant and growing Christian faith community based in Franklin, is in line to take over where Paul Ficco and his family left off almost four years ago. 

“We are under agreement for purchasing the Ficco Bowladrome building,” said senior Pastor Mike Laird. 

He can’t help but beam at the prospect. Neither can Family Ministries Pastor Heather Kempskie, who joined Laird in announcing the news."

Tri-County librarian recognized with MSLA President's Award

"One of the beauties of working with people with different interests is that their ideas can be combined, said Ariel Dagan, library-media specialist at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School. 

“I look at my surroundings and say, ’How can I create behavioral changes when I see something that’s missing,” said Dagan, who has worked in education since 1992 and arrived at Tri-County five years ago. 

The Norwood resident is originally from Jerusalem, and has since spent his life traveling back and forth, attending school in both Israel and the United States. After serving in the Israeli army, as is required of all citizens there, he attended the University of California-Berkeley and University of Rhode Island, earning a master’s degree in information studies. 

The Massachusetts School Library Association recently presented Dagan with the President’s Award, which is given to school librarians who over the course of one to five years make a significant impact on student learning."

In the News: bowling making progress to return, RT 109 contract due soon

Efforts to return bowling to town have made progress, though an official location for the new lanes has yet to be announced. 

Last month, a group of businessmen announced they purchased much of the equipment - pin setters, ball returns and an automatic scoring system - once used at Ficco's Bowladrome. Ficco's, a longtime downtown mainstay, closed last June after 79 years in business. 

Andy Trockman, the operations manager for the new effort, said some strides had been made recently, though there is still much to do. He said the group is working on an offer for a piece of land in town. 

"At that point, we can go full steam ahead," he said. "I'm still shooting for (an opening date of) September."

bowling may return to Franklin with reuse of the equipment from Ficco's

The town and state Department of Transportation are closing in on selecting a contractor for the reconstruction of Rte. 109. 

The project, which is expected to begin in July and last for at least two years, was originally estimated to cost about $12.5 million, with the state and federal governments kicking in most of that money. 

Selectmen on Monday are expected to approve a 110 percent agreement with the state DOT, which stipulates that the town would be on the hook for any project costs that exceed the contract bid price by more than 10 percent.

"Town Council members praised the local Recreation Department recently for working to expand its offerings and the number of people it serves. 

The council heard an update from department director Ryan Jette on a number of initiatives at its meeting last week. 

Among the programs the department offers, Jette said, are flag football, field hockey and basketball, as well as classes on such topics as babysitting, social netiquette and art."

From the outside, they looked like any other assortment of little old ladies.

Moments after I walked into the Sunshine Club at Franklin's Senior Center, Lena Vitti filled me in on the rules: "You have to smile to come in the door."

Little did I know I was stepping into the lion's den.

I'd gone to Franklin to take on Vitti and a handful of other seniors in a game of what's become the hottest must-have item at area senior centers - Wii bowling.

Sure, I was a Wii newbie - the closest I'd come to using the video game system was a display at Best Buy, but being in my early 30s, and part of the generation that grew up with video games, I went in feeling pretty confident.
