In the News: Hopkinton adds unified basketball; kindergartener paints his finger nails

"With a little more than seven minutes left on the clock in the first period of the Unified Sports basketball game at Hopkinton High, Max McNamara lines up a three-pointer and sinks it. 
He lifted his hands and jumped across the court as dozens cheered during the team’s first-ever home game against Worcester Tech. 
“Just like the last two games,” McNamara said of sinking the shot. The 17-year-old senior with autism enjoyed having his brother, Grant, referee the game and being cheered on by his sister, Emma. The three are triplets. 
Special Olympics Unified Sports programs promote social inclusion through sports by joining people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team, according to the organization. Hopkinton High launched the unified program last spring with a track team and added the basketball team this fall."

"With his chin held high, Sam Gouveia, 5, went back into his kindergarten classroom on Tuesday morning with more confidence and, of course, freshly painted fingernails. 
On Monday night, Sam’s father, Aaron, posted on his internationally popular Twitter account, DaddyFiles, about how his son had been ridiculed by his young classmates because of his painted nails that day. Though Aaron said he doesn’t blame the school or the teachers for the incident, he took to social media nonetheless. 
“I love painting my nails,” Sam said, laughing. “I’m just a crazy man, and it just looks pretty.”

In the News: Cannabis Control Commission timeline discussion; Boston Herald sold; Hopkinton waiting on plastic bag ban

"With the chorus of critics calling for the Cannabis Control Commission to pump the brakes on its rollout of an expansive legal marijuana industry growing louder, the top marijuana regulator said Tuesday the agency will debate later this month whether it should license only certain types of marijuana businesses to open July 1 and wait to license others. 
Gov. Charlie Baker, House Speaker Robert DeLeo and others have called on the CCC to scale back the industry envisioned in its draft regulations -- which includes marijuana cafes, delivery-only marijuana businesses, and the ability for establishments like cinemas and massage parlors to offer limited marijuana products -- at least until an initial retail market takes hold. 
“We’re absolutely going to talk about that and if we do decide to not issue certain categories of licenses on day one we’re not going to leave them open-ended, we’ll say ‘here’s our timeline for subsequent rollout,’ ” CCC Chairman Steven Hoffman said Tuesday when asked if the commission would consider a phased rollout of legal cannabis businesses. “But we have not made that decision, we are going to have that conversation.”

"The second biggest newspaper in Boston is on track to be sold for $11.9 million. 
A subsidiary of Digital First, owner of the Denver Post and hundreds of other publications across the country, made the winning bid for the Boston Herald at a closed-door auction held at the downtown Boston offices of the Herald’s bankruptcy attorney, Brown Rudnick, which confirmed the bid selection to The Patriot Ledger on Tuesday night. The Boston Herald reported that the bid was for $11.9 million. 
Digital First was one of three companies to submit bids for the paper before a deadline Friday, including GateHouse Media, the owner of The Patriot Ledger. The company also owns the Lowell Sun and the Fitchburg Sentinel and Enterprise in Massachusetts.

"The town is waiting to see how a statewide plastic bag ban take shape before taking its own action. 
Board of Health member Jennifer Flanagan brought up the idea to ban plastic bags at stores in town about a year ago after hearing about such a ban passed in Natick. Last week, the board brought the discussion back up. 
“We are still in the research and review stage,” said Shaun McAuliffe, health director."

"Carol Cavanaugh will take the reins as superintendent of (Hopkinton) schools in July. 
On Monday night, the School Committee unanimously voted to hire the district assistant superintendent. She will replace Cathy MacLeod, who will retire at the end of the school year. 
″(The committee) started discussing the strengths of different candidates and very quickly Dr. Cavanaugh rose to the top of the conversation,” said School Committee chairwoman Jean Bertschmann. The position is pending successful contract negotiations.

The committee selected Cavanaugh over three other finalists, Uxbridge Superintendent Kevin Carney, Franklin Assistant Superintendent Peter Light and Northborough-Southborough Assistant Superintendent Gregory Martineau, who previously served as principal at Hopkins School."

In the News: drought continues, craft brewing in Hopkinton

"Occasional showers with above normal temperatures in the past week did not help drought conditions in Massachusetts, according to the weekly report by the U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday. 
The report shows 37.83 percent of the state is still in extreme drought, the second highest category of drought. That figure is unchanged from last week. More than 87 percent of the state is in at least severe drought, a slight rise from last week's figure of 83.7 percent. 
There may be some relief in the next several days. Rain is forecast Thursday night through Saturday morning. More than two inches of rain could fall in some areas, especially with the risk of thunderstorms Friday night."

A small craft brewery, hoping to open at Water Fresh Farm, is seeking permission to serve its products to customers on the premises. 
Start Line Brewery is set to open mid-November, said Edwin Twinney, owner and operating manager. 
"We are just doing final testing and hope to be brewing soon," he said. 
In the meantime, the company, CraftLife Brewing Co., will go before selectmen Tuesday night to seek the farmer-brewing pouring permit. Twinney said he already has a license to sell products for off-premise consumption.

Job Search Jam Sessions return June 14


The economic outlook still has no prediction on a return to ‘full employment’. Recent Dept of Labor statistics show more than 3 applicants for each posted job and hundreds more dropping off the unemployment count.

This Job Search Jam Sessions event will provide you with help for your job search and explore alternatives like entrepreneurship. Sessions will provide you with the tips and tricks to build your network and explore the use of social media tools.

While many runners train for a long time to start the Boston Marathon in Hopkinton, the Job Search Jam Sessions is an event to help you prepare to deal with your job search. “This is an ‘unconference’ for the unemployed and underemployed,” says Steve Sherlock, lead organizer. “The event’s organizers and session facilitators all have experience dealing with the challenges of layoffs and unemployment, and they are enthusiastic about sharing what they’ve learned to help your job search.”

In coordination with the Hopkinton Networking Group, Job Search Jam Session 4 will offer networking opportunities and motivational support for unemployed and under-unemployed workers.  New and recent college graduates are welcome to participate to learn and share the tips and tricks of the job search.

Job Search Jam Session 4 is scheduled for Friday, June 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The location: St. John the Evangelist Parish Center, 20 Church Street, Hopkinton, Mass. The event has the capacity to serve up to two hundred job seekers from Massachusetts, Rhode Island and anyone willing to get to Hopkinton.

The cost is – $8 per person.  You can pay via credit card or cash at the door. 

Attendees will be asked to check in at the Parish Center on Jun 14, between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m.  Coffee, refreshments and snacks will be available for the morning and afternoon break. Lunch will also be served during the conference.  

Proceeds from ticket sales will help defray expenses. Any ‘profit’ will be donated to the Church in return for the use of their facility.

The agenda will be adapted to reflect the needs and interests of participants. "it’s getting better, but it’s not great"


At Northeastern University’s Center for Labor Market Studies, director Andrew Sum uses data collected in the census to estimate how many people stopped actively looking for work in 2011 and 2012. 
In data compiled monthly during the past two years, the number of people in Massachusetts who were unemployed, wanted jobs but had stopped looking was about 108,000. 
They gave up.

You don't need to give up. In addition to the state Workforce Development Centers in Framingham (as mention in this article) or in Milford (the closest to Franklin), there are networking groups around. If you choose to be actively involved in your job search, you can find a group.

In Hopkinton, there is a group meeting every other week at St John the Evangelist Church Parish Center. During the better part of the two years that I was looking for work, this group was a great resource.

On June 14th, there will be a Job Search Jam Session held in conjunction with the Hopkinton Networking Group. For a nominal cost (about $10), you get coffee, lunch and snacks during the day long event. There will be sessions to provide information on what you need at the moment in your search. Sessions on your resume, the use of LinkedIn, networking, and other similar topics will be offered.

Elevator Speech: How to Get to the Next Level

This workshop will cover the three essential steps to help you form a precise "Elevator Speech". Anne will discuss your own personal strengths and help you compile a 30 second introduction that does not sound like a machine talking, but actually reflects who you are and hooks them in the process. Be prepared to bring paper, pen, and an open mind. Remember: The key to your success is in yourself. Anne is just trained to bring it out.

Our 76th meeting of HNG had 14 people, this is seventeen less than the previous meeting, and five signed the New Member list. Barbara McKee was our facilitator. There were four introduction speeches.

We had an impromptu interview workshop because our speaker, Joellyn Schwerdlin, had to cancel because of a personal issue.

The parish hall has a capacity for 250 people and there is plenty of parking spaces in the parking lot and on the street. Around the perimeter of the parish hall are rooms to allow us to have focused network groups or for any other purpose we need. We chose the first and third Friday to allow everyone to attend the Acton Networking Group or any other networking group, if they wanted, on the Friday we do not meet.

We will maintain our close affiliation with Acton Networkers by using the same list-server to share information between the groups. Any e-mails specific to the Hopkinton Networking Group (HNG) will be indicated in the subject line either by "Hopkinton Networking Group" or "HNG"; this way anyone attending these meetings will know the e-mail is intended for them.

We will follow the following agenda items:

* Announcements
* New member introductions
* Needs and Leads
* Speaker(s), Workshop, or Focus Group

The agenda for this Friday's Hopkinton Networkers Group (HNG) meeting will be featured by our speaker, Monica Brunaccini. The facilitator for this week will be Christine Hurley.
