Those passing by the Davis Thayer Elementary School recently might have noticed something different - or something missing.
The town has recently removed two modular classroom units that had been on the school's front lawn, leaving a newly-seeded field in their place.
Superintendent Maureen Sabolinski said the units had been there for some time - at least a decade.
"It was a period of increased enrollment - Franklin schools pretty much doubled," she said. "There were modular classrooms at the Kennedy, Parmenter, Oak Street and Davis Thayer schools."

The Franklin School Committee reviewed and approved school handbooks this week as it prepares for the beginning of the upcoming school year.
Superintendent Maureen Sabolinski said at Tuesday's committee meeting that the district had made it a policy to review the handbooks yearly.
Assistant Superintendent Sally Winslow said, while the handbooks contain the district's overall policies and procedures, a substantial amount of work had been to ensure the documents reflect each school's culture.
"We've been doing this for three years," she said. "It's pretty seamless, I'd say."
One addition, Winslow said, was including information about suicide awareness in the middle school and high school handbooks.

Davis Thayer is growing grass

On the walk Saturday morning, the sprinklers were out to water the newly seeded lawn. The modular units as reported were removed. New loam was added and leveled. The sidewalk sections needed to be placed but the work to restore the area at the corner of Davis Thayer is well underway.

Goodbye modulars, hello open space!

Via Glenn Jones, the Davis Thayer modular space is now back to 'almost normal'. Almost because the ground will be seeded, grass grown, some plants returned and that takes time.

In the meantime, the space is open and more welcoming!

Davis Thayer modular units to be removed

The Davis Thayer modular units are supposed to be removed this summer. Walking by on Wednesday I saw equipment was being positioned to start the work. As this is posted, they may already be gone.

I went to the recent archive of photos from walking around to capture the 'old' look. Once they are removed and the ground re-seeded, I'll share some photos so we can see the before and after comparison,

There were 2 classrooms within the modular units as I recall from a tour of the school in 2012. I'll go further into the archive to find and share photos of the inside.

Parmenter: Modular update

The grounds have been landscaped. The pathway (access road) is ready to be paved.

The spot where the propane tanks were is ready to be paved. The fencing is ready to be replaced.

Soon it will be hard to tell that there were once some modular units in this space. It will be the stuff of memories and stories to be doubted until someone produces the pictures.

Parmenter: modulars gone, landscaping underway

The modular units at Parmenter School which were supposed to be taken down before school  started have indeed been removed. The last one left last week. The DPW is working on landscaping the area where they were once located.

Update: Parmenter modular units - 1 gone, 3 to go

The Parmenter modular units are indeed moving out. They were mounted upon wheels on Thursday/Friday and one of the units is off the property. The other three are positioned to be hauled away.

The DPW is busy this morning cleaning up the space where the units had been sitting for the past 10+ years. I should have some photos of the finished landscaping work for Sunday or Monday.

Parmenter: Modular update

The DPW was working on the grounds on Saturday, so I got up closer on Sunday morning to get these photos.

The unit connecting the modulars to the building itself was removed.

The units are now separated and ready to be moved.

Looks like they are now ready for the next train to pull in!

Parmenter: Modular removal underway

And the modular units are coming down at Parmenter. As I ran Friday morning, I captured these photos.

The fence is down. The entrance steps have been removed. You can compare to the pictures from last week shown here http://www.franklinmatters.org/2012/08/one-step.html or here http://www.franklinmatters.org/2012/08/parmenter-modular-units.html

One step

As mentioned previously, the modular units at Parmenter School are scheduled to be removed before school starts in September. The first step in the process mentioned in the School Committee meeting Tuesday, Aug 7 was the removal of the propane tank.

FRANKLIN —

The School Committee is recommending the town's school building committee remove all modular classrooms at Davis Thayer Elementary School and Franklin High School as soon as school ends next summer.

"The modulars throughout the system are reaching the end of their usable life, and those are the oldest in town," said Chairman Jeffrey Roy.

Davis Thayer's two modular classrooms at the corner of Union and West Central streets are probably the least popular because they are ugly, Roy said.

"They're an eyesore in the middle of town. I know a lot of people wanted them down from the standpoint of beautification, but we had to get as much life out of them as possible," said Roy.

When the district laid off teachers at Davis Thayer, two classrooms were left vacant, so it is now possible to dismantle the schools' modular classrooms, Roy said.

live reporting - modulars

Are you going to vote to give any direction to Paula and Ed to take to the Building Committee?

Take modular down because
  • of the condition of the modular
  • you have space within the building to absorb the students
  • you want to restore the building to a good condition
Davis Thayer, FHS and Remington-Jefferson

The action item should be an all inclusive package (removal of modular, restoration of grounds, re-wiring, etc. within the facilities).

Live reporting - modular status

Modulars were put into place in 1998 and are coming up on 10 years service, some of them have been used all through the year.

The high school modulars get more of an impact than those in the elementary schools

Leakage in the roofs has required replacement of full walls. A bug infestation was found and corrected. Some doors can't be opened in the winter at Parmenter (due to the temperature change).

If we removed the modulars, where would the students go?
With the reduction in staff last year, the rooms were used by art and special subjects where they were roving within the buildings before.

The high school has room to move what they have housed currently within the full building. Davis Thayer could take down the modulars and utilize two classrooms within the building.
Parmenter would have an issue if they were to loose their modulars. An OT/PT room is currently housed there. Even if the function were moved to another school, the population at Parmenter needs those services.

Replacing the roof is not an economic choice, the roof would outlast the modular.
Looking for direction from the committe before going further with the building committee.

Cafasso - there was a lot of shock and awe amongst the professionals at the FHS tour tonight. The subcommittee's report helps to fill in the needs of the district.

Armenio - This speaks to the current school population and staffing levels, with any increases, there will be additional problems in the next couple of years. It would be worthwhile to take them down. Some of the modulars are the largest classrooms in the building.
