FHS girls tennis, boys lacrosse, and baseball teams post wins on Tuesday

Via Twitter and our subscription to HockomockSports.com, we share the results of the Spring sports competition for Franklin High School on Tuesday, Apr 2, 2024.

Baseball = King Philip, 3 @ Franklin, 5 – Final
– Despite falling behind a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, Franklin plated five straight between the first three innings to bounce back with a key win over rival King Philip. Travis Crawford doubled in Max Robison (single) and then scored on a single from Aiden Astorino to give KP an early 2-0 lead. The Panthers pounced for a pair of their own in the bottom half on an RBI double from Rex Cinelli that scored Henry Digiorgio (HBP) and a sac fly from Matt Miller to score Matt Lucini (walk). Franklin took advantage of a pair of errors in the second to take the lead on a two-run single from Digiorgio up the middle to make it 4-2 and then added a fifth run in the third when Cinelli (single) beat a throw home on a grounder from Cole Sidwell. KP pulled one back in the fifth on a two-out single from Tommy Gately to score Drew Herlin (double). Jake Shaughnessy got the win on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts in four innings and Miller earned the three-inning save with a trio of strikeouts. Nate Pennini allowed five runs but only two earned on four hits and a pair of walks for KP while Ryan Higgins tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

Softball = Franklin, 0 @ King Philip, 13 – Final (5 inn.)
– King Philip sophomore McCoy Walsh didn’t allow a hit in five innings and the Warriors’ offense got off to another strong start in a win over visiting Franklin. KP batted around in the bottom of the first inning, pushing across six runs highlighted by a two-out two-run double from Jo Bennett and an RBI single from Allie Cecere. KP added a single run in the second and then three more in each of the third and fourth innings. Maddie Paschke had three hits to lead the offense with a pair of doubles while Liv Petrillo (three RBI), Bennett (three RBI), and Cecere (two RBI) each had two hits. Walsh scattered five walks over five innings but didn’t allow a hit while striking out nine for the win.

Boys Lacrosse = Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 15 – Final

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 2 @ King Philip, 3 – Final
– The Warriors captured two wins in singles action and one more in doubles play to secure a key win over visiting rival Franklin. At second doubles, the team of sophomores Brent Schneider and Logan Riley took a straight-set 6-3, 6-1 win to help clinch the team victory. HockomockSports,com: "Franklin’s Atkinson Recognized for Work On and Off the Track"

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com has a nice article providing an update on FHS alumni Halle Atkinson.
"In August, Providence College announced that Franklin alum Halle Atkinson was the school’s nominee for the prestigious 2023 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Atkinson, who played soccer and lacrosse at Franklin in addition to running indoor track, was recognized for her success as a runner on PC’s cross-country and track teams as well as her numerous community service efforts.

Atkinson is one of 619 female student-athletes that were nominated across all three divisions. The NCAA Woman of the Year Award, according to a release from the school, recognizes “graduating female student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.”

During her four years at PC, Atkinson has participated in Adopt a Family, the Thanksgiving Turkey Drive, the Friar 5K Road Race, Girls on the Run Rhode Island, Special Olympics Rhode Island, and the Relay for Life. She has also taken time out to be a tutor and a mentor to younger students by serving as a FriarEdge Family Captain, helping freshman athletes make the transition from high school to college.

“It was a little bit of shock,’ Atkinson said when asked about her reaction to the news that she had been nominated. “I was so honored but for a second, when I first read it, I was like wow they really think of me in that high of regard?”

Currently going for her MBA in accounting and rehabbing an offseason injury that will keep her from participating in cross-country this fall, Atkinson is ready for a fifth year of indoor and outdoor track. Knowing the talent and commitment level of her teammates made the nomination extra special."

School Committee agonizes over budget cuts, hears an update from Oak St and about the middle school school civics program (audio)

FM #1012 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 1012 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares part of the Franklin, MA School Committee meeting held on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.

The meeting was conducted in a hybrid format: all of the School Committee members, school district personnel along with some of the public were in the Council Chambers. Some members of the public participated via conference bridge.

Brief recap:

  • Moment of silence to recognize the tragic passing of an FHS graduating senior

  • During the Superintendent's Report, 2 highlights were shared. (1) a quick overview of the Spanish trip during Spring break. (2) recognition of three FHS outdoor track athletes for their accomplishments at the Meet of Champions

  • Recognition of Michelle Kingsland Smith retiring for the 2nd time this year with 50 years of education experience. Recognition of Miriam Goodman's retirement as Business Administrator

  • Middle school civics program provided an update on the process across the three schools and a student presentation from Horace Mann.

  • The Oak St Elementary team provided and interactive question and answer update on the happenings and progress within the school this year

  • The additional funds from the Town saves some positions but there are still 26.7 positions removed from the budget, 16 of which were enrollment related. The Committee agonized over the cuts, appreciating the effort and thought that went into trying to minimize the impacts of these. One member said as hard as it is this year, we'll look back to this budget next year as a good one. And that is not something to look forward to
