** Some Memorial Day reminders via John Hefele

"Hi Everyone, I wanted to let everyone know that the Memorial Day Parade route is the same as last year. See the photo below.
As you can see, the parade does not go along Union St.
Also, the town common side of Church Square is closed to spectators. This is to allow vehicles carrying veterans and the fire trucks access for drop off and fire truck parking.
You can view the parade from the church side of Church Square.
Areas are also roped off on the common and we ask spectators to honor these and not try to cross the ropes.
Lastly, any chairs on the common are for parade participants and not spectators.
Thank you.
John Hefele"

And from Franklin Police:

*** MEMORIAL DAY PARADE ROAD CLOSURES ***

This Monday around 10:30 am there will be several roads closed in the downtown area for the annual Memorial Day Parade. You can expect closures of Depot Street, Main Street, West Central Street, Union Street, Beaver Street, and Church Square. We’ll see you there!

BFCCPS Music School Teacher to Participate in the Rose Parade

The Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School is excited to announce that Emily Warren, our Grade Six through Eight music teacher will be participating in the Rose Parade as a member of Saluting America's Band Directors. Miss Warren applied for the program and was selected to participate in the marching band and will represent Massachusetts and will be playing the baritone.
Emily Warren
Emily Warren

This is a marching band made up of 275+ band directors from all 50 states, Canada and Mexico. It is the first time in Rose Parade history that a performing group is going to be both a float AND a marching band (all other groups have been either a float or a band) and it's the first marching band of its kind in history.
We are thrilled to see Miss Warren participating in this band which is a tribute to band directors across the country and will pay tribute to the exceptional instruction, character development and inspiration provided by music educators everywhere. We hope you will tune in to watch and cheer her on! The show will air on New Year's Day morning on ABC, NBC, Hallmark Channel, and Univision starting at 11 AM EST. Saluting America's Band Directors is expected to air in the second half of the parade (in other words, the second hour of the broadcast) and the group will be announced on TV before they perform.

You can make a donation to have a rose on the parade float dedicated to a music educator, past or present, that has made a lasting impact on your life using this link: https://rose-parade-float-campaign.myshopify.com/.../copy...
A huge congratulations to Emily, and we can't wait to see you on New Year's Day! You can learn more about enrollment at the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter School which is currently accepting applications for the 2022-2023 school year at www.bfccps.org/info

FHS Graduation 2021! It’s an Outdoor Affair

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director  05/16/2021

We began our preparations for FHS Panther Graduation 2021 several weeks ago. Every year it is our most ‘mission critical’ program, and we take many steps to ensure the event’s success as best we can. Given that it’s live, happens once, and more than 400 graduating students have extended families and friends who are eager to watch either on cable or on our Franklin Pride live stream.

No pressure.

Prior to the pandemic we had our technical setup and production routine down pretty well. Even then, we took nothing for granted. In 2020? Well, we all know what happened. We had to record the graduation proceedings carefully over three days while all graduates were socially (and chronologically) distanced.  Editing over 400 student moments timely into the final program also was a challenge.

Last year gave us a new celebration – The Panther Car Parade. We covered it live on wfpr●fm 102.9, and this year it’s back by popular demand. We plan to carry the parade live on Comcast 96, Verizon 28, video streaming and on the radio as well.

We’ll be everywhere – in your TV set, your computer, your smartphone and your radio. The Panther Car Parade will take place the day after graduation.

Currently, graduation itself will be outdoors, live from Panther Field on Friday evening at 5 PM. Of necessity, it will be a simpler affair. No procession or recession. No live band or chorus. The customary stage will be set on the track in front of the bleachers. The entire field will provide seating for graduates and their families, clustered in pods – socially distanced groups of five.  The give-n-get is that, although the ceremonies are simplified, the grads do get to sit with family.

In the event that the weather doesn’t cooperate, both events will shift by one day.
You can watch all the festivities – live – on our Franklin Pride Channel, Comcast 96 or Verizon 28. You can also listen – live – on wfpr●fm 102.9. We will also repeat both events the following week and post them to our Video-on-Demand service where you may also download as you wish – to have and to hold.
And –  as always –
Thank you for listening to wfpr●fm.
And, thank you for watching.

Pantherbook: "The Graduation Parade: Reflecting and Looking Forward"

From Pantherbook we share the following:
"Throughout a challenging, confusing ending to their final year of high school, the class of 2020 showcased their resilience in many ways. Their effort to make the most of the year was visible in carefully crafted music videos, an Instagram account dedicated to the graduating class, and a parade and virtual graduation.

This graduation parade, which was put together with the hard work of the class officers and admin, was an amazing success. The Town Common was packed with family, friends, and community members. A fun environment of celebration was created with decorated cars, music from a radio station, and even the shooting of confetti.

When speaking with the graduates in the weeks after the parade, there was an overwhelmingly positive response. While this certainly wasn’t the expected ending to their senior year, many graduates looked on the bright side, and some even said the parade was better than a regular graduation ceremony. Graduate Megan Torrey said, “The parade was honestly one of the best experiences of my life. I’m so grateful for what the Town of Franklin has done for us to make our senior year so special.”
The Franklin community certainly showed up to help these graduates celebrate, and it was well deserved. Whereas tickets are very limited in a regular graduation ceremony, the parade was beneficial because the whole town could come out to cheer on the seniors. It also offered the seniors the chance to see and reconnect with their teachers from elementary, middle, and high school years."

“We saw a lot of happy tears out there”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"Waving from a truck through town wasn’t how Chorrkin Chin envisioned celebrating his high school graduation, but it was also one car ride he’ll ever forget.

“It was crazy – I don’t even know where to start,” said Chin, vice president of the Franklin High School Class of 2020 after the high school’s first-ever car parade graduation on Friday afternoon. Wearing his blue gown with a gold graduation stole and honor cords, the 18-year-old graduate decked out his ride with silver streamers and banners for the ceremony. He saw many teachers along the 3-4 mile route, which included circling the Town Common then ending up at the high school where graduates received their diplomas from Principal Paul Peri and roaring cheers from teachers and the administration.

He even saw his kindergarten teacher.

“There was so much support for us in this community – it’s unbelievable,” he said. “Definitely one of the best times (of my life that) I’ve ever had.”

The graduates received their diplomas over Mon-Tue-Wed as the walk across the stage was recorded and then broadcast on Friday night. Many families took the opportunity to record an audio shout-out their the class and their individual graduate. Those shout-outs were played on the wfpr.fm broadcast of the parade along with a playlist of music provided by the senior class. The recorded shout-outs will be available in a podcast in the next couple of days.

FHS: Awards Night, Senior Parade, Commencement Broadcast Schedule

Dear Class of 2020, families, and friends-

Thank you to all students and families who participated in today's Day 1 diploma distribution.  The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, families and students were excellent at adhering to all safety guidelines, and we are looking forward to even more smiles, cheers, and celebrations in the coming week!

We are excited to share additional details for this week's upcoming events.

Thursday, June 4th - Awards Night: 5:30 PM
Our annual Awards Ceremony is scheduled to broadcast at 5:30 on Thursday night on both Access and Educational channels.

If you have Comcast, then the Access channel is Channel 8, and the Educational Channel is 96. For Verizon, the Access Channel is 26, and Educational is 28.  It will also be live-streamed on Franklin Panther TV's YouTube channel.

Please tune in to see over $150,000 in scholarships awarded to some incredibly deserving graduates!

Friday, June 5th - Graduation Parade:
On Friday afternoon, graduates are invited to participate in the 1st ever, townwide graduation parade! Under police escort, graduates will parade through town from each of their respective middle schools, and drive towards FHS.  At FHS, graduates will be greeted by Franklin Public Schools' faculty and staff. Franklin Police ask that graduates have a family member drive so they can fully enjoy the parade.

Each graduate will report to their middle school between 1:30 and 2:10 PM on Friday, June 5th.  FPS staff will assist in lining up vehicles at the middle schools.  The parades will depart each school on a staggered schedule to keep events moving on time:
  • Depart from HMMS - 2:00 PM  (1:30 arrival at HMMS)
  • Depart from ASMS - 2:20 PM  (1:50 arrival at ASMS)
  • Depart from RMS - 2:40 PM (2:10 arrival at RMS)
BFCCS*  students are welcome to parade with RMS if there is a meet up at the new charter school, OR, they can parade from any of the three middle schools.  Students who did not attend an FPS middle school are welcome to join a parade of their choosing.

Each parade route is different; however, all three routes will circle the Town Common and then head down Oak Street towards FHS. (See below). We anticipate the parade taking approximately 90 minutes, with the three parades eventually forming into one parade as they approach FHS.

\\FRNData\Users$\wj01\My Documents\Franklin Police\Operations\Special Events\FHS Graduation Parade 06-05-20\FHS Graduation Parade 06-05-20\High School Arrival and Exit Satellite View.jpg

We hope to see the entire town out along the parade routes supporting this amazing group of Seniors! The Town Common and Senior center will be ideal for viewing locations.

Graduates are encouraged to decorate their vehicles and wear their caps and gowns.  Maps of each route are attached below.  Please follow all town parking regulations and please follow all social distancing guidelines during this event.

Any graduate who has concerns about securing a vehicle for this special event should complete this google form no later Tuesday, 6/2.

Friday, June 5th - Commencement Broadcast 6 PM
The student procession will be airing at 6 PM Friday on both our Access and Educational channels.  FranklinTV will be broadcasting the car parade live on Franklin Radio, which you can find at 102.9 FM.  It will also be streamed on the High School's YouTube page at the same time on Friday!
