What does a free subscription to Franklin Matters get you?

What does a free subscription to Franklin Matters get you?
  • One email newsletter each day with the timely and accurate information that matters for Franklin residents and businesses
  • The daily Franklin TV & wfpr.fm radio schedule
  • Event & calendar outlook for the Franklin Cultural District (Wednesdays) and community events (Fridays)
  • Access to Franklin Matters Radio podcasts and show notes
    • "Talk Franklin" with Town Administrator Jamie Hellen
    • "Town Council Quarterbacking" with Council Chair Tom Mercer
    • "Making Sense of Climate" a series on climate challenges with Franklin's activist Ted McIntyre
    • other episodes feature Franklin business folks, authors, and other Town personnel

  • Submit a "letter to the editor" on a Franklin topic (see "Voices of Franklin")
  • Monthly Q&A on all things Franklin (hybrid event, hosted at Senior Center with Zoom option)
  • and more

There are two influences driving what I do:

1 - "follow the money" - I have long focused on the business of the Town of Franklin by closely watching and reporting on the Finance Committee, the School Committee, and the Town Council. Why? all significant revenue and expense matters generally come through the Finance Committee before going to the Town Council which is the ultimate approval. The School Committee is a clear choice as they account for more than half of the Town budget.

2 - now that I am retired with some more time to pay attention to what is going on, I have added a focus on what does the budget enable for our quality of life here in Franklin. We can get into the reasons and behind the scenes info that help explain the 'real' story. We all need accurate and timely info, not sound bites. It takes time to do this but it is necessary.

In coordination with Franklin TV, this is my public service effort for Franklin but we can't do it alone. We can always use your help.

How can you help?

  • If you can use the information that you find here, please tell your friends and neighbors

  • If you don't like something here, please let me know

Through this feedback loop we can continue to make improvements. I thank you for listening, reading, commenting and sending information along.

The long term vision is to create one site to let you Watch, Listen, Read all that matters in Franklin.

Liquor/All Alcohol licenses up for changes and/or approval for next Town Council meeting

One of the ways my informational radar works is with alerts. The Town of Franklin has a number of alerts that can be set up for you to receive an email with an update. Monday morning, was busy as three public hearings were announced for the next Town Council meeting April 6, 2022.

To set up an alert, visit this page -> https://www.franklinma.gov/subscribe

This works for some aspects of Town business. Alerts and notifications are a work in progress and I will continue to advocate for additional alerts.

In the meantime, you can also subscribe to the calendar so when an item gets added to the calendar you get notified. An RSS reader is needed for this however.   https://www.franklinma.gov/calendar  (Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the RSS icon, click it and subscribe with your RSS Reader).

Reminder: subscribe to stay in the know as we 'follow the money'

Since 2007, Franklin Matters provides a daily digital newsletter for Franklin residents and taxpayers to find out what is happening.

How do we do that?

We 'follow the money' reporting on the Finance Committee, School Committee and Town Council meetings. Given the pandemic circumstances and with a consideration for the schedule, we are either in-person or reporting in real time on the meetings.

In addition to following the money, we look at the quality of life that this brings to Franklin. We report on the Board of Health, Community Preservation Committee, and as many others as possible.

What does this reporting provide for you?

Accurate and timely info, rich with details, and links to valid source materials including (in many cases) the recordings of the meetings of themselves.

Thanks to the collaboration with our Town Administrator Jamie Hellen and Town Council Chair Tom Mercer, we conduct and share a twice monthly series of conversations as we "Talk Franklin" and do some "Town Council Quarterbacking."

Since October 2019, producing this in collaboration with Franklin.TV and Franklin Public Radio (wfpr.fm) or 102.9 on the Franklin area radio dial.

This daily newsletter is my public service effort for Franklin but we can't do it alone. We can always use your help.

How can you help?

  • If you can use the information that you find here, please tell your friends and neighbors

  • If you don't like something here, please let me know

Through this feedback loop we can continue to make improvements.

I thank you for reading, sharing, sending information along, and (of course) asking questions.

Franklin Matters information service updates

As part of the integration with Franklin.TV and Franklin Public Radio (wfpr.fm) you likely have seen some changes to this home page and or to some posts.

Two additions

  • The daily schedule for Franklin TV and wfpr.fm is shared. This is in addition to the weekly post sharing the programming guide. We'll be watching the stats (such that are available) to see if this addition is making a difference.
  • "Ask Franklin Matters"  is back in a top of fold web page spot. I had introduced this when we started the "Talk Franklin" radio interview series during 2020. This is a new year, hence a new opportunity. A couple of question have already come in so that is good. Hopefully, this feature will help answer your questions.

Two reminders

  • This is a daily digital newsletter and you have a chance to have your say (with a question - as noted above) or a comment/email. You should also know that the "Voices of Franklin" is really the same as a "Letter to the Editor". It has been used primarily during the election season but is a feature available any time you feel the need to write. Guidelines here ->  https://www.franklinmatters.org/2011/03/introducing-voices-of-franklin.html
  • The community calendar functions best when all the events are available to the community. Organizations with a Google calendar can integrate automatically. If you don't have one, you can use the form to submit the event  -> https://forms.gle/oPdi8X3ZbHHyrHzo6   If all else fails, send me an email. Be sure to include the basics of the event (who, what, when, where, etc.)

This Franklin news service (daily newsletter, podcast, Twitter, etc.) is my public service effort for Franklin but I can't do it alone. I can always use your help.

How can you help?

  • If you can use the information that you find here, please tell your friends and neighbors

  • If you don't like something here, please let me know

Through this feedback loop we can continue to make improvements. I thank you for reading/emailing/commenting/listening, etc.

Friendly reminder: The best way to remain informed is to subscribe for the daily newsletter -> https://www.franklinmatters.org/p/welcome.html

Very true; there are only three more reminders to sign up for the once per day newsletter before the info stops going to Facebook.

There are other ways to remain in the know (besides the daily newsletter). For info on those check out ->

"On the fourth day before leaving Facebook

Four seasons a year"

Yes, this is a stretch but it does fit the scheme. The information shared here does cover all the season throughout the year including all the high school sports seasons (via HockomockSports.com).
