Five Days of Action for Child Abuse Prevention

As adults, perhaps our biggest responsibility in our lifetime is to protect our children, and the uncertainty of the world today has made that more important now than ever before.

As part of our commitment to social responsibility to the communities we serve, the Hockomock Area YMCA, along with YMCAs throughout Massachusetts and across the nation will be sponsoring Five Days of Action for Child Abuse Prevention, a campaign committed to raise awareness and inspire adults to take an active role to protect children from sexual abuse.  Please visit one of our three branches to pledge to take action to protect kids all year long.

While child protection is our Y’s number one priority every day, this critical campaign will run April 15th through April 19th as we approach summertime, and will shine a collective spotlight on how everyone can do something to prevent child sexual abuse.

Five Days of Action for Child Abuse Prevention
5 Days of Action for Child Abuse Prevention
Our Y will share information and resources each day to our members and community partners about how adults can prevent, recognize and respond to child sexual abuse situations to keep children safe.

Statistics from Praesidium and the CDC indicate that 1 in 20 boys and 1 in 4 girls in the United States are sexually abused, typically by someone they know and trust. Child sexual abuse is happening regardless of age, gender, race, religion or socio-economic class.

But these are not just numbers. Behind every number is a child, a child who has been robbed of their innocence. A child whose life will forever have been changed by the heinous act of an adult. We owe it to our children, and we owe it to their future, to do better.

Help us prevent child sexual abuse through Know, See, Respond.  When adults know how abuse happens, see the warning signs, and respond quickly to prevent abuse, they foster a culture of child abuse prevention. Together we can bring awareness to the issue of child sexual abuse in our communities and have important conversations on how we can all work together to prevent it from happening. Please join our YMCA to spread important awareness and resources with your social networks and family and friends around this devastating epidemic.

Our YMCA is proud to partner and collaborate with school systems, municipalities and other human service organizations throughout our service area to help bring awareness, education and training regarding this issue. We remain committed to this collaborative cause and our effort to be part of a community-based prevention movement.

Our YMCA was awarded Praesidium Accreditation® in February by Praesidium, the leader in abuse risk management.  To achieve accreditation, our Hockomock Area YMCA underwent a rigorous process to implement Praesidium’s Accreditation Standards focusing on eight primary operational areas within our business: policies, screening and selection, training, monitoring and supervision, consumer participation, internal feedback systems, responding, and administrative practices. Praesidium then verified our Y’s successful implementation of these standards. The Hockomock Y will be accredited for three years, and during this time will commit to uphold fundamental organizational values and stringent safety practices that demonstrate our commitment to protecting those in our care from abuse.  We are proud to be part of the 24 YMCAs across the nation to reach this status and look forward to helping mentor other YMCAs in their process of becoming accredited.

As responsible adults, we need to give children a happy, healthy and safe childhood. Our world needs them, and they need us. Let’s give them the childhood they deserve.

The Hockomock Area YMCA Held Its Reach Out Annual Campaign At Gillette Stadium

The Hockomock Area YMCA held its annual Campaign Breakfast, a long-standing tradition held at Gillette Stadium’s Putnam Club in Foxborough.

The Hockomock Area YMCA is more than a place; it is a cause that is committed to strengthening communities. The Y’s annual fundraising campaign, known as Reach Out, ensures this non-profit organization continues to address emerging and critical human needs across the 15 communities they serve.

Farzin Karim, chair of the Board of Directors at the Hockomock Area YMCA provided welcoming remarks and shared her personal story of receiving a scholarship to attend the Y as a young girl, “The Y was there in my time of need and that’s exactly what we’re here to do this morning, be there for someone in their time of need,” said Karim. “None of this would be possible without all of you – our family, our friends, our neighbors, and our community leaders.  There’s collective strength and power in us coming together to serve the needs of those in our community and to make a difference in people’s lives. That need has never been greater.”

Board of Director Angela Davis shared the Hockomock Y’s community impact noting, “Last year, this YMCA provided $3.3 million in confidential financial assistance, providing opportunities for people in need to participate at our Hockomock Y.  Additionally, 40,000 meals and 25,000 bags of groceries were distributed.  These numbers are incredible, but we must never lose sight of the fact that behind every one of these numbers is a person, a life, a story.”

The event’s guest speaker was Congressman Jake Auchincloss. Congressman Auchincloss remarked, “The Hockomock Area YMCA serves as a cornerstone of our community, enriching the lives of individuals and families and contributing to the overall well-being and vitality of this area.”  Reflecting on his visit to the Y in 2020 during the pandemic, Auchincloss shared, “The Hockomock Y was providing food, emergency child care for first responders, and a safe place for students to participate in remote learning. The Y was there to meet whatever need arose. Quite simply, the Y provides opportunities in a way that no one else can. They can’t do this work alone and that’s why we are here today. Please help answer the call by making a donation to this incredible cause.”

YMCA members receiving financial assistance shared their stories of how the Y has impacted their lives. Christina, a grandmother raising her grandchildren, shared, “The YMCA has become a cherished part of our journey. They have demonstrated the profound impact that kindness and support can have. The amazing thing is that my grandchildren had the ability to attend Y programs without anyone knowing we received support.  You all make that happen for hundreds of families.”

The Hockomock Y’s Board of Directors issued a $50,000 challenge to event attendees, matching all leadership gifts of $500 or more at the event.

Jim Downs, Hockomock Area YMCA CEO thanked attendees for being at this event, believing in and supporting the Y’s mission saying, “Reach Out is the centerpiece of how we provide for our YMCA mission every day and helps make it possible to deliver so many important, vital programs and services. My commitment to you and our 15 area communities is that our YMCA will continue to be here when the need is greatest to serve our communities and to serve them with compassion."

The Hockomock Y’s goal is to raise $1.5 million for this year’s campaign. The Breakfast event raised $224,000, bringing the total raised to date to $451,000 for this year’s campaign.  To make a gift or learn how you can volunteer, visit www.hockymca.org/give

The Hockomock Y provides a safety net for thousands of individuals and families facing challenges.  The Y encourages members, volunteers, neighbors and friends in the community to join them in making a gift and raising funds to provide confidential financial assistance to those facing challenges.  The Y is guided every day to remain focused on how best to respond to the emerging needs of the community it serves.

Hockomock Area YMCA introduces new outdoor tree-climbing elements to enhance youth programming in Franklin

The Bernon Family Branch of the Hockomock Area YMCA has installed new outdoor tree-climbing elements as an enhancement to its outdoor challenge course in Franklin. The new climbing elements were funded by a generous donation from longtime Y supporters Paula Rooney and Gerry Shaw, and will be used extensively in spring and summer 2024 with youth participating in the Y’s Before & After School Care and Summer Camp programs, as well as local school groups visiting the Y.

outdoor tree-climbing elements

In late August, the Franklin Y installed Monkey Hardware systems on trees on its property, each providing a different climbing level of accessibility. These kits effectively turn the trees into climbing walls and are paired with the TRUBLUE iQ auto belay system. The TRUBLUE auto belays allow climbers of all ages and skill levels to climb heights safely. Rather than pulling the young climber upwards, they allow climbers to ascend the tree on their own power, while providing rest as needed during the climb with its catch and hold technology. Once the climber has reached the top of the climb they have chosen, the auto belays use magnetic braking technology to lower the climber back down slowly and safely to the ground.

The Monkey Hardware and TRUBLUE auto belays have received rave reviews from Y summer campers. "These new elements have brought the kids together in a new way that I have not seen in a long time. When a camper was climbing their whole group would be watching and cheering them on to reach the top," said Ashley Dumas, Youth Program Director at the Bernon Family Branch.  "It gave the kids something to work towards and accomplish. It was amazing watching the campers challenge themselves to make it higher than they did last time or try a harder climb."

The Hockomock Y is grateful for this generous donation made possible by Paula Rooney and Gerry Shaw. The Franklin Y's camp and playing fields also feature Gramdma's Place, an outdoor pavilion with weatherproof tables and seating, which was built with funds donated by the Rooney & Shaw family.

"From their decades in leadership at Dean College in Franklin to their contributions as Board members of our Hockomock Area YMCA, Paula Rooney and Gerry Shaw have a long history of supporting youth and families in the Franklin community," said Jim Downs, Hockomock Area YMCA CEO. "Our Y staff and members are so appreciative that they continue to find new ways to enhance operations at our Y and help us provide an even better experience for the youth we serve."

The Hockomock Area YMCA is currently accepting camp registrations for the 2024 camp season.  To view offerings and to register, visit: https://www.hockymca.org/camp

Hockomock Area YMCA receives $20,000 grant to educate and provide mental health trainings for staff

The Hockomock Area YMCA announced it received a $20,000 grant from the MetroWest Health Foundation to help address mental health challenges.

The 1-year grant will be used to develop opportunities and trainings aimed at educating YMCA staff around creating a culture where mental health discussion is encouraged. Funding will provide Mental Health First Aid Training for Hockomock Y staff and also support a communication campaign to staff, volunteers and members around the Y’s commitment to address mental health. Staff will learn tools and overall strategies to better support mental health among youth.
Hockomock Area YMCA
Hockomock Area YMCA

"Our YMCA is thrilled to have the longstanding support of the Metrowest Health Foundation as we continue to grow our Mental Health Programming and supports. During our six months of strategic planning, Mental Health was discussed as the top priority for all populations in each outreach session,” comments Jim Downs, CEO of the Hockomock Area YMCA. “A set of strategic goals arose from this process, with one of them addressing the evolution of our YMCA’s mental health support for all ages in the communities we serve. We recognize that education and normalizing the conversation about mental health is of the utmost importance for every individual in and outside of our YMCA branches. Specifically, education and empowerment of staff around the topic of mental health is imperative for the youth and individuals we support.”

The grant is in response to the 2020 MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey that found 13% of youth reported feeling depressive symptoms in the past year and 11% had seriously considered suicide in their lifetime.

For more information on the YMCA’s efforts around Mental Health, please contact Brynne Kirwan, LCSW, at brynnek@hockymca.org.

Update on Y pool fire - not to open this year

Monday, May 22, 2023

Due to the extensive damages from Saturday’s fire and the information we’ve gathered in the last 48 hours regarding the reopening process, the timeline to complete the necessary repairs would make it impossible to open our Family Pool Club in time for the 2023 summer season. We are deeply saddened by this fire and its devastation.

We are committed to the Club’s rebuild and creating the best member experience possible, opening in June 2024.

Family Pool Club members will receive full refunds on all fees paid by May 26th.

Thank you for your confidence in our YMCA – even in the face of adversity – to continue to deliver our mission to be here for our neighbors, serve our communities, and come back even stronger from this unfortunate incident.

Sincerely,
Jim Downs
CEO, Hockomock Area YMCA

Fire at YMCA's new Family Pool Club at Park Terrace in Plainville

YMCA Image

MEMBER UPDATE

HOCKOMOCK AREA YMCA

Dear Members,

We regret to inform our members and the community that our YMCA's new Family Pool Club @ Park Terrace in Plainville caught fire yesterday afternoon. The main clubhouse building experienced significant damage.  No one was in the building at the time and we are thankful that no injuries were reported.  We are grateful to the Plainville Fire Department who led the efforts, along with mutual aid from other local fire agencies, to suppress the fire.

The facility was under final renovations and preparations for its opening in June. We acquired the property earlier this year and significant construction and renovations were underway in anticipation of re-opening the facility for the summer season. The swim club is situated on 10.5 acres in a park-like setting at 5 Berry Street, Plainville.

As a local community centerpiece for family fun for decades, everyone at the Hockomock Area YMCA was excited and energized for the re-opening of this Plainville summer landmark.

We are deeply saddened by this fire and its devastation. We are fully supporting and cooperating with the Town of Plainville and the Plainville Fire Department as they conduct a fire investigation.

Our YMCA's hope and expectation is to rebuild. While we don't know the timeline and details at this very moment, we are dedicated and committed to this wonderful local recreational treasure. More information will be shared as it becomes available.

Thank you for your confidence in our YMCA – even in the face of adversity – to continue to deliver our mission to be here for our neighbors, serve our communities, and come back even stronger from this unfortunate incident.
