"They say necessity is the mother of invention. But Michael Haywood was driven by plain embarrassment.
The nightmarish winter of 2015 was at its worst, a barrage of powerful storms that brought the MBTA to its knees. In desperation, state officials called in prisoners and the National Guard to help the transit system dig out, one shovelful at a time.
For Haywood, an MBTA machinist who fixes snow-clearing equipment, it was a personal affront. There had to be a better way, he thought.
So he thought of one: mounting a John Deere vehicle often used to scoop dirt — it’s called a skid-steer loader — onto railcar wheels in order to clear the snow-packed tracks. It sounded farfetched, and some of his colleagues were skeptical."

On Friday February 17th at approximately 5:43pm the Franklin Police responded to a report of two pedestrians struck by a motor vehicle in the area of 110 East Central Street. Franklin Police and Fire responded to the scene.
One of the injured was transported to Milford Hospital while the second injured pedestrian was transported to Rhode Island Hospital. The operator of the vehicle remained at the scene, and will be interviewed by officers from the Franklin Police Accident Reconstruction Unit. At this time the injuries to one victim appear to be serious.
No further information is available at this time.
This crash remains under investigation by the Franklin Accident Reconstruction Unit. The names of the involved parties are not being released at this time.

"– Franklin rallied from 10 points down to start the fourth quarter with a 27-11 run to close out the game. Ali Brigham led the way for the Panthers with 17 points to help Franklin move within one game of tournament qualification. Shannon O’Connor was the top scorer for KP with 14 points."
"Franklin got off to a strong start on Friday night and that momentum carried the Panthers to a 72-59 road win over King Philip.
The Warriors kept things close in the opening quarter, with Tom Madden cutting the deficit to four (11-7) but Franklin responded with a run to stretch its lead. The Panthers rattled off a 9-0 run that included a Connor Goldstein three pointer and four points from Paul Mahon, who had five of his 13 points in the first quarter. The run gave Franklin a 20-7 lead after eight minutes.
With Franklin big man Connor Peterson (18 points, five rebounds) on the bench to start the second quarter due to foul trouble, KP quickly put four points on the board, but Franklin quickly answered back with four of their own. A huge quarter from Josh Macchi, who scored 10 of his 13 points in the second period, had Franklin up 36-25 heading into the second half. The key in the first half for Franklin was the production from the bigs in Macchi and Peterson (seven first quarter points)."

"Best-selling author and Carnegie Medal finalist Ruta Sepetys told a rapt group of middle schoolers that the characters in her novels are not just a collection of sentences on a printed page.
"As I'm writing, I'd feel not only angry, but sad - I'd be sobbing (while writing)," she said. "They really do feel real to me."
Courtesy of Skype, Sepetys came to Horace Mann Middle School to talk about the writing process, resolving plot questions and plug an upcoming movie based on her New York Times best-seller "Between Shades of Gray." The 2011 novel is about the genocide of Lithuanians and other Baltic people following the Soviet occupation in 1941.
Sepetys said she decided to write the book to shine light on a little-known chapter of history. She said she had spoken to survivors who told her not to bother with it, as the world has forgotten them."

"As part of a larger effort to combat the opioid epidemic in the area, public safety officials on Wednesday provided life-saving training to help overdose victims.
The session - held at the Franklin Fire Department Headquarters - was held to teach people how to assist those who have suffered an overdose, providing training on the overdose-reversing drug Narcan and CPR techniques.
James Derick, president of the anti-opioid Support for Addicts and Families through Empowerment (SAFE) Coalition, said the purpose of the event was to give as many people as possible the methods to prevent overdose deaths. He said there had been strong interest in the community about the event, including from business owners - something he attributed to the large number of overdoses in the center of town.
"There's a real concentration around the businesses here," he said, adding that training business owners and employees would allow them to help victims until emergency responders arrive."
