Baseball = Franklin, 14 @ Stoughton, 10 – Final
– Franklin scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 9-9 tie and emerge from Stoughton with a win on the road. JB Flores went 4-for-4, including a double and an RBI while scoring a pair of runs. Evan Wendell also had a strong day for Franklin with a pair of doubles, runs scored and four RBI. Jake Macchi added three hits and three RBI for Franklin while both Scott Elliott and Colby Fitzgibbons had two RBI apiece. Ben Guzman got the win in relief, allowing three hits and one run over three innings of work. Stoughton’s Matt Hadley and James Genest both went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Geroge Currier and Cian Swierzewski each drove in two runs for the Black Knights.

Softball = Stoughton, 2 @ Franklin, 12 – Final

"Coming off of a 12-6 win over Canton, the Franklin softball team knew it would have to continue its success at the plate to get a win over Stoughton. The Panthers did that as its offense started fast and came away with a 12-2 win over the visiting Black Knights on Wednesday afternoon. 

After Emily Valentino (complete game, seven hits, 11 strikeouts) set Stoughton down 1-2-3 in the top of the first, Franklin got right to work in the bottom half of the inning as Tara Hartnett (1-for-1, two walks, two RBI) hit an RBI triple to bring home Anna Balkus (2-for-4, two RBI), who reached on a bunt single earlier in the inning. 

After a scoreless top of the second, Franklin got back at it in the bottom half of the inning, sending every batter to the plate as Meg Caron led off the inning with a single, and after a lineout, Gabby Colace singled. A force out at third left Franklin with runners on first and second and two outs, but Balkus singled home Colace to put Franklin up 2-0. Kylie Bouzan followed that up with an RBI single, and following a walk by Hartnett, Jackie Cherry scored two on another RBI single. Maddy White then singled home Hartnett to extend Franklin’s lead to 7-0."

Tony Calderone and Derek Wu won 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles while Shournik Sompally and Saket Gandham won 6-0, 6-1 at second doubles. Rohan Herur won 7-5, 6-3 at first singles, Liam Marr dropped just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win at second singles, and Tyler DiPalma won 6-0, 6-1 at third singles.

Live Music Events In May At THE BLACK BOX

THE BLACK BOX presents several live music events this May at the downtown Franklin venue, beginning with a Decades Series cabaret show on Saturday, May 12. The musical tribute to the ‘70s will feature some of the most memorable songs from that decade. Celebrate unforgettable moments from an era highlighted by tumultuous times, technological advances, and music ranging from progressive rock to disco. Two performances will be presented at 7:00 and 8:45 p.m. Tickets are $24 (adults) and $20 (students/seniors). The Decades Series concert is sponsored by 1776 Financial.

"The Gershwin-Porter Songbook" featuring vocalist Cindy Jones

On Sunday, May 13, THE BLACK BOX Local Artist Series presents "The Gershwin-Porter Songbook" featuring vocalist Cindy Jones. This special Mother's Day Brunch will showcase American music by two of the most prolific composers of the 20th Century, George Gershwin and Cole Porter. Their music remains as fresh and irresistible as it did during the Jazz Age. Cindy Jones, along with special guest Alan Mercer, will be joined by a nine-piece band of some of the area’s finest musicians, conducted by Bill Jones. Brunch begins at 11:30, with music starting at noon. Tickets are $20 for the show only, with a $45 combination ticket for brunch and music.

THE BLACK BOX New England Artist Series presents The Love Dogs, featuring rockin’ rhythm and blues, on Saturday, May 19 at 8 p.m. With barrelhouse boogie-woogie piano, stinging Fender guitar, and a red-hot horn section of trombone and alto, tenor, and baritone saxes, The Love Dogs also showcases a swinging rhythm section that Blues Review magazine called “the best in the business” and a charismatic front man with one of the biggest blues voices around. Based out of Boston, the septet recently celebrated its 20th year. Combining elements of jump blues, New Orleans R&B, and early rock ‘n’ roll, The Love Dogs have played juke joints, festivals, and concert halls across the U.S. and Canada and on both sides of the Atlantic. They’ve released four CDs. Many of the cuts have been blues radio favorites and several of the Dogs’ signature original songs have been used in feature films and on television. Voted “Best New England Band” by Blues Audience magazine, The Love Dogs is part Rat Pack party, part 20th century musical encyclopedia, and part revival meeting. Tickets are $20.

On Friday, May 25 at 8 p.m., THE BLACK BOX Local Artist Series presents The DayBreakers. Blending folk-rock melodies with blues guitar muscle and rock ‘n’ roll grit, the DayBreakers have earned their stripes over four years of consistent gigging throughout New England. The band has played many of Boston and Cambridge's most revered rooms, sharing the stage with some of the region's best roots rockers, such as Entrain and the Silks. The group has also performed as an opener at Indian Ranch for three years running, opening for Three Dog Night, The Beach Boys, and Bret Michaels. Their music tells timeless stories of happiness, heartbreak, rejection, and redemption with rhythm that keeps audiences dancing. Combining rock ‘n’ roll, blues, country, and funk, the band has worked tirelessly to craft a sound that is filled with hard riffs and soulful melodies. Baseball = Canton, 1 @ Franklin, 4 – Final
– Jake Noviello allowed just one run in six innings of work, struck out six, walked four, and scattered four hits to lead the Panthers to a win on the road. Bryan Woelfel earned the win, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Cooper Ross paced the offense, going 2-for-2 and scoring a pair of runs while Jack Nally had two RBI and Scott Elliott chipped in with a double and a run scored.

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 5 @ Canton, 0 – Final
– Frankin notched an impressive win on the road, losing just seven games total to sweep Canton. Liam Marr (second singles), Saketh Saripalli (third singles), the team of Tyler DiPalma and Derek Wu (first doubles) and the pairing of Dan Angermeier and Tony Calderone (second doubles) all won 6-0, 6-0 for the Panthers. Franklin’s Rohan Herur battled to a 6-3, 6-4 win at first singles.

Girls Tennis = Canton, 5 @ Franklin, 0 – Final
– Canton went on the road and earned a sweep of Franklin, taking all three singles matches in straight sets. Natalie Keppler (first singles) and Rachel Kupferman (second singles) each won 6-0, 6-0 while Sarah Hernandez earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at third singles for the Bulldogs. The team of Caitlin Matthews and Stelina Michaelidis prevailed 6-0, 4-6, 10-6 at first doubles and the pairing of Jamie Cree and Jena Moyle picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at second doubles.

Boys Outdoor Track = Franklin, 45 @ Mansfield, 91 – Final
– Mansfield swept the 100M, 200M, and the long jump to earn nine points from each event to get a win over visiting Franklin. Greg Waters (11.3), Khristian Conner, and Colin Eutsay swept the 100M for the Hornets, Mike Shannon (22.6), Jack Rivard, and Dan Knight took first, second, and third (respectively) in the 200M, and Jareme DiLorenzo (19’8), Joe Cappelletti and Andrew Williams took care of placements in the long jump.

Girls Outdoor Track = Franklin, 78 @ Mansfield, 58 – Final
– For Mansfield, Amanda Mangano had a terrific day with three wins and a second place in another event. Mangano won the 100M (12.4), the 200M (25.3), and the high jump (5′) while taking second in the long jump (16’6). Junior Julia Hill had a 7-inch PR in the long jump to win with a jump of 16’7 and running a three second PR in the 400 hurdles for a second place in a time of 69.4. The Hornets’ 4×100 team of Gabrielle Devlin, Emily Quitzau, Samantha Hindman, Julia Harrison had a season-best time of 50.4 while sophomore Lily Goulding took first in the javelin (95’4″).

Speaker DeLeo to help Roy Kick off 2018 Re-Election Campaign

Rep. Jeffrey Roy (D-Franklin) will kick off his 2018 re-election campaign at the Elks in Franklin with Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo. Roy is seeking re-election for a fourth term in the 10th Norfolk District which includes all of Franklin and precincts 2, 3 and 4 in Medway.

The kick-off is on Thursday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Franklin Elks Lodge #2136, 1077 Pond Street, Franklin.

Roy currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing and is a member of the Committees on Mental Health, Substance Use, and Recovery, Municipalities and Regional Government, and Export Development. He also serves as House Chair of the Manufacturing Caucus which promotes and encourages "Making It" in Massachusetts.

"I have enjoyed serving the residents of Franklin and Medway for the past six years and would be honored to serve another term," noted Roy. "We have made great progress in the areas of education, economic development, health care and veterans affairs, and I want to build on that success. In addition, we have addressed the challenges of substance use disorder, the environment, social equity, and criminal justice, and I look forward to continuing the work in these areas."

"Presented by the Highland Street Foundation and produced by the Boch Center, ArtWeek expanded its partnership with Music Drives Us to provide grants for events during its 2018 festival (April 27 – May 6). 

A Franklin resident, Lydia Lucas, received a $500 performance grant to support the presentation of the event, Drumming Around the World, during ArtWeek. The event will take place on Saturday, May 5 from 2-3 p.m. at the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School, 201 Main St., Franklin. 

Through this hands-on musical experience, Drumming Around the World focuses on exploring different cultures and their musical styles through the art of drumming. Participants will learn elementary to intermediate rhythms by ear, participate in drum circles, practice improvisation skills, and learn the history of hand drumming."

"The U.S. opioid crisis has passed a dubious milestone: Overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl have surpassed deaths involving prescription opioids. 

This change occurred in 2016, according to data published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. And it seemed to happen pretty suddenly. 

Data from the National Vital Statistics System show that there were 42,249 opioid-related overdose deaths in 2016. That includes 19,413 that involved synthetic opioids, 17,087 that involved prescription opioids and 15,469 that involved heroin. (In some cases, more than one type of drug was implicated in the death.)"

FSPA All Access Pass For Prospective Students To Feature Complimentary Spring Concert Tickets

Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) is pleased to provide prospective students with complimentary tickets to FSPA Spring Concert performances as part of the school’s All Access Pass program. Families are invited to learn more about FSPA programs in music, dance and drama. The Spring Concert shows provide a dynamic way to experience what the school has to offer across many dance disciplines, voice, acting, instrumental music, and musical theater programming. 

Spring Concert performances will be presented on Saturday, May 19 at 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. and on Sunday, May 20 at 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. at the Franklin High School Auditorium, located at 218 Oak Street. Featuring FSPA students of many ages and levels, Spring Concert is presented in an audience-friendly, 90-minute format.

Founded in 1985 by Director Raye Lynn Mercer, FSPA has been dedicated to the enjoyment of the arts for all ages and to the artistic growth and development of young people. The school offers classes in all dance disciplines, acting, musical theater, voice, and instrumental instruction, whether for recreational enjoyment or serious study. FSPA is also home to the Little Music School, an innovative program that teaches children as young as 18 months to play the piano. 

An extensive calendar of year-round performing opportunities features musicals, plays, ballets, voice and instrumental recitals, opera scenes, musical theater and dance company showcases, and more. Many FSPA students are also cast, by audition, in the affiliated Franklin Performing Arts Company’s annual season of shows. FSPA TALENT offers management services for young performers who elect to pursue professional opportunities.

FSPA is also proud to offer FSPA Academy, an academic alternative for students seeking a challenging curriculum in a supportive, flexible environment that encourages their creative goals. Provided Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in partnership with TEC Connections Academy Commonwealth Virtual School (TECCA), the program builds upon TECCA’s state-approved online curriculum and features an enhanced emphasis on arts, language, and culture, including Music Theory, foreign language conversation classes, field trips and more. 

In addition to the Academy, FSPA also offers FSPA AfterSchool, an enrichment program for students in grades K-5, providing supervised recreational experiences, including games, crafts and other creative arts activities. The program begins at the close of the regular school day, with transportation available from Franklin and Medway schools.

Noviello selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week

"Franklin senior Jake Noviello has been selected as the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week, presented by Morse Insurance, for April 22 through April 28. Noviello is the 26th player selected for the 2017-18 school year and the third player chosen during the spring season. 

Noviello starred on the mound and at the plate this week to help Franklin win three games and move into first-place in the Kelley-Rex division. The Fairfield University-commit tossed his second straight shutout on Monday, hit an important home run on Tuesday and was part of a comfortable win on Saturday, as the Panthers pushed ahead of three division rivals to take the top spot in the standings. 

“Jake really set a tone for us on the hill on Monday with a great effort,” said Franklin head coach Zach Brown. “And then he carried that all the way through the week. Offensively he had a big day against Attleboro. He’s just been really steady defensively and as a leader. He was a really big part of us going 3-0 last week.”

The Hockomock Area YMCA invites residents in local communities to enjoy a ‘summer-like’ day filled with fun and the chance to learn what camp is all about at our free Camp Open House. The event will take place on Saturday, May 5th from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM at our Bernon Family Branch (located at 45 Forge Hill Road, Franklin), at our Foxboro Branch (located at 67 Mechanic Street, Foxboro), and our North Attleboro Branch (located at 300 Elmwood Street, North Attleboro).

At Camp Wiggi (Franklin), Camp WAPAWCA (Foxboro), and Camp Elmwood (North Attleboro) children look forward to built-in swim lessons, free swim, sports, STEM, gaga pit, arts and crafts, theatre, nature, games, music, archery, ropes team building, camper’s choice, fun weekly themes, special guests, field trips, and more. 

Grades 2-6 venture on weekly field trips to new and exciting places such as Launch Trampoline Park, museum of Science, Mystic Aquarium, Spring Lake, Breezy Acres, and so much more. On Wednesdays, special guests will visit with the first graders and junior campers. Some of those visitors may be petting zoos, frisbee catching dogs, magicians, musicians, and more.

Hockomock Area YMCA traditional camps include STEM programs to help close summer learning gaps between school years. The Hockomock Area YMCA offers 3, 4, and 5 day camp options as well as pre and post care from 7:00-9:00 AM and 4:00-6:00 PM for parents in need. In addition, learn more about Hockomock Area YMCA specialty camps such as several sports camps, gymnastics, enrichment, dance, swim, STEM, theatre, teen camps, and Explorer Camp Adventures.

In the News: ArtWeek continues through Sunday; Downtown Partnership looking for new members

"Just like the waxing moon, Franklin waxed full of arts over the weekend, making for a successful kick-off to the town’s first ArtWeek celebration. 

An evening featuring a sampling of mini performances at the Franklin Historical Museum on Friday blossomed into a full day of creativity at various locations around town the next day, with a multi-media watercolor workshop, a chalk art event, creation of origami cranes, rendering of live performances into sketches and water color paintings, a fairy tale-based comedy, a family paint session, a dance performance and a musical theater concert. 

It all continued on Sunday afternoon, with a performance by the Prolatio Singers and a concert by classical pianist Diana Fanning.

And that was just the start. The week-long celebration of the visual and performing arts, which the Franklin Cultural Council has organized in collaboration with Boston’s annual festival, runs through this Friday.

"The Franklin Downtown Partnership invites businesses, groups and residents to join the organization to help revitalize town center and support local Franklin businesses. 

The Partnership is well known for its popular community events, including the Strawberry Stroll, the Harvest Festival and the Holiday Stroll, but the non-profit group is involved in many more endeavors. 

For the past 16 years, the Franklin Downtown Partnership has played a significant role in the town’s revitalization projects. The FDP has assisted with design and infrastructure improvements like signage, downtown green space and patios, the Historical Museum sculpture, the Horace Mann sculpture, spring flowers, holiday decorations, and many economic development and marketing initiatives. 

“We currently have nearly 250 members and we would love for more people to join, get involved and be a part of our long-term success,” says Executive Director Lisa Piana. “We are a group of individuals focused on creating a vibrant community for our businesses, our neighbors, and our visitors. Our focus is to encourage people to shop locally and support Franklin businesses.”

"The Charles River Pollution Control Board is seeking Franklin volunteers to take the place of long-time member Eugene Guidi, who is taking his leave after 19 years. 

“We need members there,” he said. “It’s hard to get people to join.” 

The Charles River Pollution Control District includes a regional wastewater treatment plant located in Medway that treats up to 5.7 million gallons a day.
The board is designed to have three Franklin members, but hasn’t had a third member for quite some time, Guidi said. With him and his nearly two-decades experience also on the way out, the town is seeking interested volunteers in a multitude of relatable fields. 

“People on the board have been finance people, insurance people, construction people, engineering people,” he said. “We’re really overseeing and auditing the operation of a business.”
