The Oscar Meyer Wienermobile: photo essay
The Oscar Meyer Wienermobile came to Franklin yesterday as part of the Big Y celbrating their grand opening.
As a big kid, and one who grew up with Oscar Meyer (yes, showing my age!) I couldn't pass up the opportunity.
Especially since Beefilicious Ben had sent me an email letting me know they were coming. If they took the time to find me, I could only return the favor!
I was justly rewarded with the visit
The inside reminded me more of Pooh Bear (similar colors)
I think I would could get used to seeing the hot dog on the dash after awhile. At least I hope so
This is only the most recent of a long line of vehicles that goes back to 1936. Is anyone around who remembers one of these earlier versions?
You can enter a contest to get driving around in the luxury vehicle if you register on oscarmeyer.com
This was one way to bring smiles to those who came by the Big Y on Saturday!

Big Y coins
Dolores and I made our first visit to the Big Y on Friday night. The parking lot was busy but there were open spots fairly easy to find. The store is nice. I got the feeling that some of the crowding, negotiating in the aisle will settle down as folks figure out their path through the store. Right now, there is a lot of looking and exploring going on.
And there is a lot to see and explore. Folks will hand out a store layout so you'll be able to find the produce or meat section readily. There are plenty of baggers and cashiers available. This is always the cash for a new store. It will be interesting to see how many there will be on a regular basis going forward.
You can sign up for a frequent buyer card. They apparently have multiple levels as we found out at the register when asked if we had any coins to use. Coins?
Yes, apparently based upon purchases, you can earn coins and then use them for reduced prices on future purchases. I understand the concept behind it but tracking and remembering to bring the coins back with you might be too inconvenient for some (including moi!).
I do like and appreciate their efforts to use local products. There were some stuffed clams that we purchased at a good price that were made in RI.
I was disappointed that while Big Y offers the 'store brand' of Greek yogurt, they don't offer their own for regular yogurt. Odd. They must have a reason for it. May be one factor keeping us from being a regular customer. Like others, it may very well be another stop for a good sale but may not replace our regular shopping.

Big Y hitting the mailbox
If your house is anything like mine, you have now received the third mailing from the Big Y. Each mailer opens to tout that they "not just another grocery store". In the past two weeks, there have been coupons. The coupons all are valid from Aug 23rd (the store opening day) until Sep 19.
In related news, for those wishing that this had been a Trader Joe's - they will open at Patriot Place on Sep 7th

Franklin's Big Y getting ready
The final preparations along RT 140 are underway for the Big Y to open as announced on Aug 23.
New curbing is being placed as the road will be wider approaching the Big Y entrance.
New concrete sidewalks are being finished along the way on both sides.
The wider road becomes more evident as you approach the main entrance which is also opposite the entrance to the Franklin Municipal Bldg and neighboring retail plaza.
This is one of the light poles that will control access to the main entrance of the Big Y as well as the entrance into the Franklin Municipal Bldg and retail plaza.
The landscaping is looking good. The signs are in place. Aug 23 will be here soon.
For more about the Big Y feel free to visit their web page http://www.bigy.com/

"the signal will help alleviate that traffic"
The Milford Daily News reporting on the Big Y hiring 150 writes in part:

D’Amour-Daley said construction, which began last summer, has progressed steadily thanks to the mild winter.
“We are proceeding right on course and all is going well,” she said.
Heavy snow and frigid temperatures have plagued past store constructions, she said.
D’Amour-Daley said the store — across the street from the Franklin Municipal Building, on the former site of the Franklin Buffet restaurant — will open sometime in the fall, after the traffic light at the supermarket’s entrance is installed.

Big Y in Franklin making progress
The construction to connect the water and sewer lines in addition to widening RT 140 is progressing. On my run Sunday morning, I went by and stopped for some photos.
Looking westbound, the road is widening:
They have started with a paving undercoat on this section:
Grading work is being done to shape the entrance
Another view of the grading work at the entrance, looking westbound on RT 140
After making my way along RT 140 heading westbound, I found this sign.
There was no sign on the other side of construction to have alerted me that the sidewalk was closed.
The BIG Y is looking to hire for positions to operate the store http://www.bigy.com/Careers#.T55i17PEXTQ

"the change will be good for Franklin"
"The site work is starting - obviously, you see some of that," Big Y spokeswoman Claire D'Amour-Daley said. "We've been really wanting to expand our eastern stores for quite some time."
Contractors knocked down the empty building two weeks ago, where the Franklin Buffet restaurant last stood, but D'Amour-Daley said it could take nine months to a year before the project is finished.
"It's good for property values around here," said Town Councilor Andrew Bissanti, whose realty business is also near the land leased by Big Y. "It's going to be fantastic. It's just a matter of time before Rte. 140 gets built up nice and clean. Now is as good a time as any."
But other local business owners and residents have mixed feelings on the grocery chain coming to Franklin, with some happy to see development but many worried about traffic.
