Valentines prepared by students for the Senior Center

values learning through discovery

community garden started last year, grant from the Y, assistance from the DPW

ECDC is a tuition school, looking to improve and enhance development opportunities

eliminating the 2 day option next year
extending time in school programs overall, shortest program will be 3 days

piloting a single age group next year, will really be dependent upon the registration and enrollment for this option

raising expectations for student actually results in increased performance

technology, use of Google docs and use of Blogger
thematic unit updates for classrooms to bring to the families

introducing students to technology as a learning tool, iPads for example

big difference in the 3 days versus the 2 days

There is a scholarship program available

early education matters...

Franklin Public Schools ECDC Preschool Program Now Enrolling for Fall 2016

The F.X. O'Regan Early Childhood Development Center (@FranklinECDC) is committed to offering preschoolers here in Franklin an opportunity for high quality developmentally appropriate learning in an environment that encourages diversity, cooperation and understanding.

Our building and our curriculum have been designed to meet the complex needs of students with and without disabilities help them develop the necessary readiness skills to prepare them for kindergarten. Our teachers are highly qualified public school certified in early childhood, special education or a combination of both specialties.

Students who attend ECDC participate in our inclusive, or "integrated" preschool model. In these language-based classrooms, children of all ability levels, with and without identified special needs, are taught together in an environment that nurtures peers as partners in learning.

Research has proven that linking children of varying ability levels actually enhances the growth and development of all the children. Each of our classrooms maintains a low class size, maxing out with 15 students, with a Massachusetts certified teacher and at least one qualified educational assistant.

Franklin residents who turn 3 by August 31st are eligible to register for the integrated preschool program at ECDC.

Families interested in ECDC can call the main office to schedule a tour or reach out to Kelty Kelley, ECDC Principal, @ 508 541-8166 or kelleyk@franklin.k12.ma.us.

Additional information about tuition, staff, curriculum, school hours, and much more can be found on the principal's blog, http://www.ecdcprincipalpage.blogspot.com/ and on the ECDC website http://franklinecdc.vt-s.net/pages/index.

"Big Idea" - posted at the beginning of each unit to help center the idea and activities

Open House to showcase the learning and engage the parents
created a passport to get checked off for each activity in each classroom, a change from the prior open house where the parents would go to the one classroom, visit and leave for the night

literacy tied in to the lessons

art theme, inspired by Eric Carle

increasing communications and connections, via email, also started a blog
You can find the Principal's Page here http://ecdcprincipalpage.blogspot.com/
(It is also found on the right column of the Franklin Matters home page where the Franklin Area blogs are located)

parent workshop to help them engage their children with STEM learning (a good way is by cooking)

a networking group for parents of children with special needs that don't already have an IEP

looking to make a long term partnership with the Franklin Public Schools, working with a collaborative advocate

working to include the children from sub-separate classrooms to spend time with regular classrooms, part of the long term transition

worked to streamline the registration process, eliminate one step in the process (already registered with the district for proof of residence)

special transition program with each of the receiving schools, enabling connections and meetings

the children makes the connections easily, facilitated the parent connections

Rohrbach
nice work, did well unifying the school

Mullen

Franklin Blog: ECDC Principal Page

Kelty Kelly, the principal at ECDC, is writing a blog.

Welcome to the F.X. O'Regan Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) Principal Page! Here families and community members will find updates, information and resources, as well as pictures and commentary from ECDC Principal, Kelty Kelley.

A new post highlights kindergarten registration information for ECDC families. Note that while this information is targeted for the ECDC families, those who may have children attending ECDC in a future school year could find this useful.

Kindergarten Registration:
This year we are working to simplify and streamline the Kindergarten Registration process for current ECDC families. Here at ECDC, we will be collecting and coordinating the required documentation, as well as scheduling Kindergarten Screenings (once the dates become available). By taking these new steps, we will expedite your child’s registration and eliminate the need for you to attend the district-wide registration. Within the next week all families with children entering Kindergarten will receive a packet of information with more details!
You can read Kelty's full posting here

Fire Alarm - Horace Mann, Oak St, ECDC schools

A message from OAK STREET ELEMENTARYGood afternoon Oak St, ECDC, and Horace Mann families,

As you may know, a malfunction in one of our smoke detectors triggered an emergency evacuation. Even though this was not technically a drill, our students and faculty were not in any real danger at any time. The evacuation went smoothly and the fire and police departments responded quickly and efficiently.

Unfortunately, the same malfunction that triggered the alarm prevented us from immediately resetting the system. As a result, the alarm persisted for more than three hours.

After waiting outside for thirty minutes, we were cleared by the fire, police, and facilities departments to reenter the building despite not being able to reset the alarm. The flashing lights associated with the fire alarm continued through most of the afternoon. Accommodations were made for individual students as needed.

Best regards,

Corine Minkle, Kelty Kelly, Shawn Fortin
