The Franklin Education Foundation Announces the 2017-2018 Pinnacle Award

The Franklin Education Foundation (FEF) announces this year’s FEF Pinnacle Award grant to Kathleen Merten and Ann Williams of Kennedy Elementary School for their project to enhance English, science and social studies curriculum with digital devices and virtual reality viewers. The Pinnacle Award is given to the most meritorious application applying for the award, and provides up to $5000 for the project budget, rather than the standard $3000 budget.

With this award, FEF has awarded 15 grants totaling $33,310 for the 2017-2018 school year to teachers in the Franklin Public School (FPS) system. A committee composed of FEF representatives and FPS staff read all proposals through a blind review process and selected the recipients.

Since its inception in 1997, the FEF has awarded over $375,000 in grants to FPS. Yearly fundraisers such as November’s Harlem Wizards basketball game, the annual Trivia Bee, as well as an annual fund campaign, provide much appreciated support from businesses, families, and organizations for the FEF grants.

Franklin Education Foundation (FEF) Announce Revised 2017-18 Grant Award Program

A recent Facebook post by the Franklin Education Foundation announces that the grant applications are due Oct 27, 2017. While this targeted to the school district teachers and staff, there is also a reminder that you can help contribute to the FEF via one of their fund raising events or directly online.

"The Franklin Education Foundation (FEF) is pleased to announce the revised 2017-18 grant award program.
This is an exciting opportunity for faculty, administration and staff to obtain funds that will support stimulating and innovative projects.
Founded in 1997, FEF consists of a diverse group of individuals from many segments of the Franklin community. Members include community leaders, local organizations, educational institutions, business and industry, and families.
Each member of FEF supports the Foundation’s fundamental goal of providing a forum and means of achieving academic excellence for the school students of Franklin, MA.

We made changes to the grant program for next year in response to our surveying Franklin Public Schools (FPS) teachers and administration. These changes will provide applicants more time to construct a innovative proposal and allow for a more rapid project funding/implementation schedule. Next year, grant proposals will be reviewed and funded within the school year. This is a change from previous years when proposals were submitted for projects to start the following school year."

The council voted Wednesday night unanimously on the alteration - which would rezone the 11-acre lot at 496 Summer St. from "rural residential I" to "single-family residential VII."
Town Administrator Jeffrey Nutting said the development was expected to resemble the Cook's Farm project currently under construction along Rte. 140, near Franklin Country Club. The single-family residential VII zone was created to allow for that development."

"Lack of rain in the state has area towns taking different approaches to deal with the shortage, ranging from bans to restrictions.
Milford’s water ban has limited outside watering to hand-held hoses between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m for no more than one hour. Since June 1, the town's water conservation level has been at Stage 3, which forbids irrigating, car washing and pool filling.
Last year, according to the National Weather Service, Worcester received 6.35 inches of precipitation during June. This year, the area has only received 1.38 inches in June so far."

The Franklin Education Foundation Announces 2015-2016 Grant Awardees

The Franklin Education Foundation (FEF) has awarded 9 grants totaling approximately $19,500 for the 2015-2016 school year to teachers who represent all educational levels in the Franklin public school (FPS) system. A committee composed of FEF representatives and FPS staff read all proposals through a blind review process and selected the recipients.
Franklin Education Foundation
Franklin Education Foundation
The committee also awarded the inaugural FEF Pinnacle Award to Mr. Nick Goldman of Oak Street Elementary School for his proposal to introduce heart rate monitors into the elementary physical education/health curriculum. The Pinnacle Award is given to the highest scoring application and provides up to $5000 for the project budget.
“Consideration was given to need, innovation, impact, and integration with other school programs when selecting applications for funding. All of the selected proposals were meritorious. Mr. Golman’s proposal was selected for the Pinnacle Award because it sought to integrate heart rate monitors into the elementary physical education/health curriculum, and also to provide the anonymous heart rate data to fifth grade math teachers to use in their classes. This has never been attempted in Franklin Public Schools and impressed the committee as the being most innovative application.” stated Kit Brady, FEF President and Chair of the Grant Review Committee.
This year’s other recipients are:
Franklin High School
  • Dawn-Marie Fernandes, Jennifer Spencer, Judy O’Neill, “FHS Goes Global” passport program
  • Dr. Carolyn Fortuna, Dan Hudder, Sam Rosen, Storyteller for 12th grade children's literature class
  • Jane Hogan, “Language as art” cultural installation; and Brenna Johnson, Community outreach through the arts afterschool club
At the middle school level, recipients are:
Remington Middle School
  • Tulani Husband-Verbeek, Book club with author visits by Skype; and Karen Lindblom, Motivational game creation workshop for teachers

At the elementary school level, recipients are:
Oak Street School
  • Tracie O'Brien, Home book bag program for grades 1-2
Parmenter School
  • Jean Wolf, Summer book clubs for students and read aloud book bags for parents

Since its inception in 1997, the FEF has awarded over $325,000 in grants to FPS. Yearly fundraisers such as next November’s Harlem Wizards basketball game, the annual Trivia Bee, as well as an annual fund campaign, provide much appreciated support from businesses, families and organizations for the FEF grants.
