"Climate change is fundamentally an issue of health equity and racial justice"

"AS THE WILDFIRES raged out west on July 26, we woke up to a hazy sky that was uncharacteristic of the Boston area.  The usual clear and clean skies of living next to the ocean disappeared and our air quality hit a dangerous and “unhealthy” level.  As healthcare workers looking at this thick smog, we knew to expect additional emergency department and office visits for respiratory complaints.  People with asthma, including children, would have a harder time breathing because of the increased soot and particles in the air. This polluted air may also increase the transmission of COVID-19.

The fact that our air could be polluted from wildfires on the other side of the country is a stark reminder of our interconnectedness. It demonstrates that no one is safe from the ravages of climate change.  Thousands of people in the Pacific Northwest visited emergency departments because of the extreme heatwave that swept through their communities this summer. Here in Boston, we experienced the hottest June on record, followed by the wettest July on record, and in August a tropical storm. As this is being published, we are in the midst of the fourth heat wave of 2021. For us, this translates into an unacceptable increase in the number of patients being treated in hospitals for heat exhaustion and asthma exacerbations."

We Are Convened - In Order to Form a More Perfect Union

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director   07/25/2021

Zoom is the new normal for our weekly Radio Roundtable, More Perfect Union.

The good news – it works remarkably well, enabling the four of us to find an hour in our full calendars to gather and open the floor to vibrant discussions on all manner of issues. We recorded this episode about election reform on Friday morning.

Some weeks might begin with, “Not sure what I can bring to this week’s discussion.” Then we start recording and the conversation flows. Jeff Roy, Dr. Natalia Linos and Dr. Michael Walker-Jones all begin to spark off each other, and I (upper right) am happy to draft in the wake of their brilliant insights. Next thing we know – another easy hour has rolled by, and we are all just a bit smarter for the discussion.

You can get a little smarter along with us. Search for wfpr●fm’s ‘More Perfect Union’ wherever you get your podcasts.
And –  as always –
Thank you for listening to wfpr●fm.

Franklin TV - E Pluribus Unum–?

by Pete Fasciano, Executive Director   07/18/2019

These days it feels a bit more like E Unibus Plurum. Out of one nation’s goal to achieve heard immunity and protection for all. There are many divisive opinions. So many opinions are sadly conflated by so much misinformation and myth. Yes, we are all entitled to our own opinions, but not to our own facts. Facts are facts.

Fact: The vaccines work – remarkably well.
Fact: They are up to 100 times safer than risking infection.

These next few weeks are mission critical for those who have yet to be vaccinated. Note that it takes 2 shots and 5 to 6 weeks to achieve full immunity. That puts any protection for the unvaccinated into late August – when health experts fear the rising worst wave through September and on. If you are not yet vaccinated, this should be tops on your to-do list.

It also means that masks will likely return as the new fall fashion.

Conversely, for those who still don’t wish to be vaccinated, if at the least, you wear a mask then you are doing the right thing for others while you exercise your right. Thank you.

E Pluribus Unum–?
E Pluribus Unum–?

However,

in our collective fight against the virus,

are you choosing to die on the field of battle?

Fight for yourself, your family, your friends. Take up arms (the left or right one) against the invisible enemy – the real enemy – the virus, and give it your best shot – or two.

I pledge allegiance to the mask and the United Safety of America.
And to the protection for which it stands.
One nation, invincible
with immunity and vaccines for all.

And –  as always –
Thank you for listening to wfpr●fm.
And, thank you for watching.

Boston Globe: "Harvard professor Danielle Allen to launch historic bid for governor"

"Harvard professor Danielle Allen will launch a historic campaign for governor on Tuesday, entering the Democratic field as the first Black woman to run for the executive office as part of a major party in Massachusetts at a time when women and people of color are breaking barriers in city and state government.

Allen, 49, joins what’s likely to be a crowded primary with a hefty academic resume but no experience holding elected office.

A MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient and the head of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics since 2015, Allen says she is running to bring the lessons of her career as a political philosopher — that government must meet a high bar, serving all people — to Beacon Hill.

And her bid solidifies a family legacy steeped in fights for racial justice: a grandfather who helped found the first NAACP chapter in his North Florida community, where doing so meant risking one’s life, and a grandmother, working as a nurse in the segregated South, who dreamed that one day her offspring would study at Harvard."
