Updated: Franklin 2015 Memorial Day Paarade Route and Schedule

You may recall that the release of changes to the Memorial Day parade route and schedule earlier this month created several conversations. The Franklin Rotary Club have provided updated information to help clarify the changes and schedule. Thanks to Councilor Matt Kelly for providing the updates to share.

Memorial Day 2015 - Schedule

Parade Route:

The 2015 Memorial Day Parade route will begin at the Franklin Fire Station and proceed up Main St to Church St. The parade will no longer go down School St, Union St, or Beaver St. The parade will not stop at Union St or St Mary's Cemetery's (Ceremonies at both locations are scheduled to occur before the parade itself.)

Date: Monday, May 25, 2015

Muster: 10am -10:15am 
- Group leaders must check in at the Franklin Historical Museum "Hats Off to Franklin" statue

Parade: 10:45 am

Ceremony: 12noon at the Franklin Town Common

Holiday Craft Fair - Nov 22 - Franklin VFW

ATTENTION ALL MISSION FAMILY and FRIENDS

Please visit the Craft fair at the VFW Post - 1034 Pond Street, Franklin, MA. 

The Friars Floral's will have a booth with silk floral arrangements to sell as a fund raiser for our ministry thanks to the generosity of the VFW auxiliary and members, in addition there will be multiple vendor tables offering homemade items including honey, wooden toys, knit and crochet clothing and accessories, handmade quilts, holiday decorations, snowmen, and stained glass. 

A Farmers Market area will be available and a physical therapist will offer massages starting at noon time.

"support the Munroe family"

The Milford Daily News writes of the fund raising event for the Monroe family:

Starting at 10 a.m. today, Delgado and a small group of others will be hosting a yard and bake sale at the VFW Post 3402 at 1034 Pond St. in Franklin. 

Delgado said an email to her Facebook friends and to a yard sale website of which she is a member received more than 200 responses within an hour. 

"It really is a group effort," she said. 

Delgado said the group of organizers has received "tons" of donations from the entire local community, including raffle items from local businesses like Pinz, Pepperoncini’s, Bellingham Town Pizza and Noelle Day Spa and Salon.

Franklin VFW to celebrate 75 years

"I think for the VFW to succeed we're going to have to take in new members," said member Howard Crawford, 87, who served in the U.S. Army in World War II and Korea. He said he is confident soldiers from the Gulf War and conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan will become active as they get older. 

"When people are returning from war (today), they are consumed with their family and want nothing to do with us. They just want to forget it."

There be tires!

It starts with one person. Dave Dobrzynski, local coordinator for the Charles River Watershed Cleanup activities. Dave is at the Whole Foods Market in Bellingham, handing out t-shirts, coordinating assignments for the 300 plus volunteers working to clean the junk along the Charles.

He gets off the phone and says, I have a story for you. The BSA Venture Crew 22 has just pulled 125 tires from along Mine Brook to fill a dumpster at the VFW Post on Pond St. Dave had talked with Brutus Cantoreggi earlier to get a dumpster positioned there and to have a Bobcat clear out some of the prickly underbrush to enable volunteers to get in close to the brook. All that was successful! Dave adds: "A special thanks also to Ken Gormley in the Highway Division of the Franklin DPW for handling all the logistics of getting me the dumpster and clearing out the brush for us."

I headed to the VFW Post 3402 on Pond St.

As I approach, the parking lot has a bunch of cars, a full dumpster, and there is a group of folks with the Charles River clean up blue t-shirts.

Linda Rafuse, leads the Venture Crew. This group was founded about four years ago, has had up to 28 members and currently has 12, half of whom should up to do the volunteer work today.

The work wasn't easy. The tires and other junk has accumulated over the years. Some of the tires actually has small trees growing around or in them.

The photo on the left is deceptive but there is a slope down from the area on the parking lot to the wet lands long Mine Brook.

The work was dirty as evidenced by this close up of Laura Rafuse's jeans.

They used to be a nice clean blue. Not now, after moving the tires and junk up they are filthy!

Yes, there be tires. 125 of them by their count.


I'll validate that the dumpster is indeed full.
