“Playing at BC gives you an extra bit of motivation"

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides a good write up on former FHS football standout Colton Cardinal.

"On Dec. 8, Boston College’s football team held its annual Senior Banquet to hand out awards to some of the players in their final season in the program. Among the honorees that night was senior fullback Colton Cardinal. The former Franklin standout arrived at BC as a preferred walk-on at linebacker and lasted four years with the Eagles as a fullback and as a regular on special teams.
Cardinal was honored with the Loyalty Award, which is given each year, according to the BC website, “to the individual who possesses an unwavering amount of support and allegiance to a long-term commitment.”
“That was kind of special,” said Cardinal following the team’s a mid-week practice. “It kind of took me by surprise but I was really happy.
He added, “Not really having anyone behind me and believing in me except the locals in Franklin and being able to solidify myself as a player on special teams and a little bit on offense. Then to have my coaches and teammates honor me with the Loyalty Award meant the world to me. It was the highlight of my four years here.”

“We have to play hard because we have something to prove”

Josh Perry, the Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides a good article on FHS alumni Nicole Ellin.

"Trying to balance academics and athletics is hard enough at the college level, regardless of what division you are playing at, and Bard College senior Nicole Ellin increased the difficulty level further by being a standout in two sports. Not only does she have to balance school work with practice and games, but also balance her yearlong commitments to two programs, soccer and lacrosse.
The Franklin High grad leads the Raptors in minutes played this fall, starting all eight of Bard’s games so far this season and all but one game in four years, and is also, already, a two-time captain for the lacrosse program and played in every game over three seasons with one more spring to come.
While Ellin admits that she had to learn how to manage her time to be fully committed to soccer, lacrosse, and her studies as a psychology major, this was exactly what she was looking for when she searched for the right school four years ago.
“It’s hard with school work sometimes because of the workload, but it keeps me busy,” Ellin said. “It’s my last seasons for both sports so I want to be there for both lacrosse and soccer. It’s hard to be around for both sports and be part of both teams completely, which I am, but you have to separate your time.”

FHS Alumni: Lexi Martin

The Franklin radar picks up this profile of FHS alumni Lexi Martin now entering her senior year at Merrimack College.

"Lexi Martin is a senior guard on the Women’s Basketball team. Before coming to Merrimack, she attended Franklin High School in Franklin, Mass., where she was four-year letter winner and two-time Hockomock All-Star. Martin emerged as a contributor on the team during her first year and continued that through sophomore year. She missed the entire 2017-18 season due to an ACL injury, but looks to come back even stronger for the Warriors this season. Martin majors in International Business.
How did you first get involved with basketball?
My mom got me into basketball when I was little. She started training me and helped coach my travel team growing up."

“I ended up here for a reason"

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides a nice write up on former FHS basketball player Alicia Kutil.

"Five years ago, former Franklin High standout Alicia Kutil nearly stepped away from her dream of playing college basketball when she transferred from the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. to UMass Amherst. In search of the right fit for her personally, Kutil’s basketball career was given a second chance by UMass Dartmouth, which had recruited her during her time at Franklin.
Just two weeks ago, Kutil, now a senior captain for the Corsairs, took a cross-court pass and fired up a three-pointer from the left wing in the final minute of a comfortable win against Little east Conference (LEC) rival Eastern Connecticut. With that three, Kutil became the all-time leading scorer in the program’s history.
Not every path to success is a straight line.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” said Kutil in a phone conversation the day before UMass Dartmouth faced Eastern Conn. in the LEC semifinal. “I’m still kind of in shock about. On senior night they talked about it before me and my family walked out and I think that’s when it hit me. It’s crazy! I really never thought in a million years that would be me.”

In the News: breathalyzers included in policy; Library events planned; Bohmiller hired; new acting Senate president

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
"The School Committee voted to support changes in the high school student handbook that would allow staff and administrators to conduct breathalyzer tests at social events such as prom.
Franklin High School Principal Paul Peri said the idea came from a student. Peri said that a group of students came to the administration to propose the idea, citing that many other school districts in the area have already implemented this in their high school student handbooks.
“This was exciting because it was student voiced, and student generated by student leaders,” he said. “They did most of the legwork.”

"The Senate initiated an Ethics Committee investigation on Monday night into its now former president Sen. Stanley Rosenberg in a dramatic day of upheaval that saw Worcester Democrat Harriette Chandler installed as the new acting Senate president pending the outcome of an investigation into sexual harassment and Senate interference by Rosenberg’s husband.
The election of Chandler, Rosenberg’s top lieutenant, and the adoption of an order green-lighting the Senate Ethics Committee investigation marked the culmination of a marathon day of closed-door talks between Democrats and Republicans.
Chandler emerged as the unanimous choice of Democrats to take over the Senate temporarily after Rosenberg announced in the morning that he wanted to take a “leave of absence” from his leadership duties to ensure a “fully independent and credible” investigation."

BFCCPS Alumni – Where Are They Now

From the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School (BFCCPS) blog, comes this item of interest for Franklin voters.

"Students in Kindergarten through Grade Eight at BFCCPS participate in a variety of Community Service projects each year. It is our hope that over the course of their time with us, that these continued service opportunities will help instill an ongoing interest in service activities well beyond their time here at BFCCPS.
We’ve recently learned that two BFCCPS alumni, Patrick Casey and Eamon McCarthy Earls, have registered to run for office during this year’s Franklin Town Council Election.

"it’s no surprise to see exceptional results like these”

FHS Class of 2015 graduate Kyle Pandiscio is making waves!

"In a field of 1150 teams, Isenberg undergraduate Kyle Pandiscio ’19 (Marketing) and Julia Keefe ’17 (BDIC) won first-place honors in the billboard display category in Project Yellow Light, a national advertising competition that promotes safe driving practices. The competition’s high-profile sponsors include AdCouncil, Clear Channel, I Heart Radio, Mazda, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, U-Haul, and the National Organizations for Youth Safety. Unveiled on a Times Square billboard on June 7, the winning design by the UMass Amherst duo currently graces more than 1,000 Clear Channel digital billboards across the nation.
Kyle and Julia’s concept, captured in the photo, marshals “auto-correct”-inspired messaging to convey a dire consequence of driving while texting. With no-nonsense clarity, the billboard’s message reminds drivers to self-correct (i.e., eliminate) the potentially fatal habit of texting while driving—auto-correction for auto drivers, if you will."

FHS Hall of Famer Maurica (Carlucci) Powell

Good news submitted by one of the Franklin Matters readers:

"Oregon Assistant Coach Maurica (Carlucci) Powell is an FHS Hall of Fame track athlete. She coaches the women's distance runners and set Oregon on this path by leading the women to the NCAA Division 1 Cross Country Championship. Over the years she has coached many of the top American female distance runners. Arguably one of the most successful female track/cross country coaches of all time."

"The University of Oregon women became the first women's program in NCAA Division I history to complete the triple crown of DI cross country, indoor track and outdoor track team titles in one school year.
Though widely considered to be the best overall team in NCAA history, the Ducks have had their share of ups and downs. Star sprinter Hannah Cunliffe, the 2017 NCAA 60m champion, withdrew from West Prelims due to injury. Their NCAA record holding 4x100m relay was disqualified. On day one, several top women -- including defending NCAA 100m/200m champion Ariana Washington -- did not automatically advance to finals. In the 200m, NCAA leader and 2016 Olympian Deajah Stevens fell to the ground just meters from the finish line and was disqualified. "

In the News: commuter rail, Tri-County, alumni funds

If anyone has ridden the commuter rail, you know that from time to time the on-time performance can be frustrating. The MBTA provides some updates on new equipment which should help to improve the situation and the new arrangement with CSX which will reduce contention on the rail line.

"the Alumni Association is to be a conduit"

FRANKLIN —

Giving the 2009 graduating class a glimpse into the distant future, the Franklin High School Class of 1959 reunited at a reception at Horace Mann Middle School yesterday. The tradition, which was started by former Principal Jack Lucas, dates back to 1998. However, this was only the second year that a reception was held for the alumni to gather and catch up on the 50th anniversary of their graduation.

Organized by the Franklin High School Alumni Association and the Franklin Lifelong Learning Institute, the event gathered 23 members of the 95-member 1959 class. It was a strong turnout, according to Lifelong Learning Executive Director Pandora Carlucci.

"Every graduate means a lot to us, no matter how long you've been out of school," Carlucci, the first of a handful of speakers, said to the lively crowd of alumni.

FRANKLIN —

People at odds over a feral cat colony at Highwood Condominiums may get a resolution tonight.

The condominium complex's board of trustees will discuss the matter and possibly decide to take action at a meeting open only to condo owners, said property manager Roy Blanchard.

Blanchard declined to talk about the controversy.

"This doesn't need to be in the press anymore. We can take care of our own issues," he said.
