Priya Parker: "The way we gather has been changed forever"

Priya Parker writes:
"The way we gather has been changed forever. How will we come together moving forward?
This past year, we've had to figure out how to teach and wed and learn and work and graduate and worship and organize and celebrate and mourn without being physically together.

At long last, gathering is coming back. This re-emergence is the ultimate gathering makeover. And we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to experiment, re-imagine, and dream up how we want to gather now.

Let’s gather again as we never have before. Join me in this exploration this summer. "  Visit https://gatheringmakeover.com/

FM #579 - Franklin author Susan K Hamilton - 07/08/21 (audio)

FM #579 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 579 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Franklin author Susan K Hamilton.  Susan has just published her second fantasy novel, The Devil Inside.

We talk about Susan’s Franklin story. How her interest in writing was instilled early on but she really only started exploring this while in college. Her two most recent publications were in the realm of fantasy albeit different from each other. Her next work might be something in women’s literature..

The recording runs about 33 minutes, so let’s listen to my conversation with Susan outdoors on the Town Common

Boston Globe: "Harvard professor Danielle Allen to launch historic bid for governor"

"Harvard professor Danielle Allen will launch a historic campaign for governor on Tuesday, entering the Democratic field as the first Black woman to run for the executive office as part of a major party in Massachusetts at a time when women and people of color are breaking barriers in city and state government.

Allen, 49, joins what’s likely to be a crowded primary with a hefty academic resume but no experience holding elected office.

A MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient and the head of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics since 2015, Allen says she is running to bring the lessons of her career as a political philosopher — that government must meet a high bar, serving all people — to Beacon Hill.

And her bid solidifies a family legacy steeped in fights for racial justice: a grandfather who helped found the first NAACP chapter in his North Florida community, where doing so meant risking one’s life, and a grandmother, working as a nurse in the segregated South, who dreamed that one day her offspring would study at Harvard."

You can listen to Danielle on an episode of  "Toward a More Perfect Union"

I have read her book on the Declaration of Independence "Our Declaration." She provides a slow reading of the text with insights and perspectives you don't get elsewhere. Well worth the time to read.

FM #559 - Don Wilding talks "Shipwrecks of Cape Cod" - 06/01/21 (audio)

This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Franklin resident and author Don Wilding. We had our conversation outdoors, on the Town Common, albeit with some traffic and a gentle breeze. We were able to remove the sounds of the one truck that interfered. We had a pleasant talk about Don’s story, living in different parts of the Hockomock League area and now here in Franklin.

It was exciting to be in person, my second time for a recording this year. We get into Don’s recent book: Shipwrecks of Cape Cod. He is out on a lecture circuit of sorts with a presentation on this book.

The recording runs about 33 minutes, so let’s listen to my conversation with Don Wilding

Boston Made: From Revolution to Robotics, Innovations that Changed the World

Publication:  February 23, 2021, from Imagine Publishing, an affiliate of Penguin Random House.

Learn more about the book and reserve your copy: www.BostonMadeBook.com.

As a friend, family member, or business associate, I hope you will consider purchasing the book or sharing this email with anyone you think might be interested!

Best Regards,

Alan Earls

Below is just one of the Boston innovation stories we cover in the book.

A Boston Made Innovation:
Basketball turns 130 years old

Hoops – the globally popular game of basketball was invented and first played in Massachusetts in 1891. Athletic coach James Naismith was given two weeks by his boss to invent an indoor game where football playing teens wouldn't hit each other – "not rough"- when kept indoors by wintery weather. Naismith did it and basketball was born.

"an invitation not to mistake difference for defect"

Maria Popova (@brainpicker) tweeted on Sat, Jan 02, 2021
"I have written a children's book. It is a true story — a love story, a science story, a story about the poetry of existence, about time and chance, genetics and gender, evolution and infinity, about diversity as nature's wellspring of resilience and beauty"
"Great children’s books move young hearts, yes, but they also move the great common heart that beats in the chest of humanity by articulating in the language of children, which is the language of simplicity and absolute sincerity, the elemental truths of being: what it means to love, what it means to be mortal, what it means to live with our fragilities and our frissons. As such, children’s books are miniature works of philosophy, works of wonder and wonderment that bypass our ordinary resistances and our cerebral modes of understanding, entering the backdoor of consciousness with their soft, surefooted gait to remind us who and what we are."

Spear Phishing hits authors with books about to be published

"Earlier this month, the book industry website Publishers Marketplace announced that Little, Brown would be publishing “Re-Entry,” a novel by James Hannaham about a transgender woman paroled from a men’s prison. The book would be edited by Ben George.

Two days later, Mr. Hannaham got an email from Mr. George, asking him to send the latest draft of his manuscript. The email came to an address on Mr. Hannaham’s website that he rarely uses, so he opened up his usual account, attached the document, typed in Mr. George’s email address and a little note, and hit send.

“Then Ben called me,” Mr. Hannaham said, “to say, ‘That wasn’t me.’”

“It’s uncomfortable for a lot of parents, so a lot of times they just skip over it"

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:
It’s been two years since Sam Gouveia was teased by some of his kindergarten classmates for painting his nails red.

Now a month shy of his seventh birthday, he still paints his nails. He also started experimenting with make-up to recreate looks based off of YouTube tutorials. He started with his mom’s products, but now he has his own bag of make-up.

“He hasn’t had a problem (with being judged) since then,” said his father Aaron Gouveia, writer of the nationally-known “Daddy Files” blog, about that day in 2018.

When Gouveia started a thread on Twitter supporting Sam wearing nail polish, it went viral, receiving more than 35,000 likes and support from celebrities like former New England Patriots tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett, and voice actress Tara Strong, who has voiced popular characters like Timmy Turner from the “Fairly OddParents.”

FM #292 Aaron Gouveia - Daddy Files - 5/21/20 (audio)

FM #292 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 292 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Franklin resident and author, Aaron Gouveia. We had our conversation on the Town Common on a gorgeous day in May while adhering to the ‘social distancing’ requirements of this pandemic period.

We talk of his popping to my Franklin radar as a dad blogger when in 2018, his son in kindergarten came home with a problem due to some of his class’s reaction to his fingernails being painted. Aaron set up a Twitter thread before he went to bed that night and woke up to find his phone exploding with notifications.

Long story short as he made the media rounds, he got an offer to write a book about toxic masculinity. His book is now due to be published June 16

We had a great conversation
  • about parenting, both boys and girls,
  • the needs for good role models for our youth
  • the minimum wage workers who are the heroes in this pandemic.
  • the nature of work is changing and
  • maybe there is a silver lining in this pandemic.

The show notes include links to Aaron’s Twitter profile, the Amazon book page, his book web page, and to the quote I botched during the conversation.

The recording runs about 28 minutes, so let’s listen to my conversation with Aaron. Audio file ->
