Meet at the Hockomock Area YMCA for Camp Blast Family Night on Friday, March 30

The Hockomock Area YMCA invites residents in local communities to enjoy a ‘summer-like’ evening filled with fun and the chance to learn what camp is all about at our free Camp Blast Family Night. The event will take place on Friday, March 30th from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM at our Bernon Family Branch (located at 45 Forge Hill Road, Franklin), at our Foxboro Branch (located at 67 Mechanic Street, Foxboro), and our North Attleboro Branch (located at 300 Elmwood Street, North Attleboro).

Learn why kids have the ‘Best Summer Ever’ when they attend Hockomock Area YMCA summer camps. Our Camp Blast Family Night will include opening and closing Ceremonies, face painting, camp songs, STEM, crafts, active games, raffles and prizes, a bouncy house, and more for all to enjoy. Children will get to participate in and experience Y Camp hands-on. Parents and prospective campers will have the chance to tour our camp facilities, meet camp directors and counselors, ask questions, and try out the many activities our summer camps offer. Go to hockymca.org/camp for more information.

At Camp Wiggi (Franklin), Camp WAPAWCA (Foxboro), and Camp Elmwood (North Attleboro) children look forward to built-in swim lessons, free swim, sports, STEM, gaga pit, arts and crafts, theatre, nature, games, music, archery, ropes team building, camper’s choice, fun weekly themes, special guests, field trips, and more. Grades 2-5 venture on weekly field trips to new and exciting places such as Launch Trampoline Park, museum of Science, Mystic Aquarium, Spring Lake, Breezy Acres, and so much more. On Wednesdays, special guests will come and visit with the first graders. Some of those visitors may be petting zoos, Frisbee catching dogs, magicians, and musicians.

Hockomock Area YMCA Counselors Share Impact Summer Camp Has On Participants

Across the 15 communities the Hockomock Area YMCA serves, there are many opportunities for young people to work and contribute to the community. The Y summer camps are one such opportunity. In fact, across the five summer camps of Bellingham, Foxboro, Franklin, Mansfield, and North Attleboro, the Y employed 301 camp counselors this year – many of whom are former campers themselves. These valuable members of the Y community are vital to the success of each of the 1,300+ campers that participate in the Hockomock Area YMCA camps each day.

Sam Taggert, a counselor at Camp Elmwood at the North Attleboro Y since the age of 16, cites her own experiences as a former camper and the importance of camp to the kids as her reasons for becoming a Camp Elmwood counselor.

“I knew I wanted to have this job because I looked up to my counselors so much,” said Taggert. “Camp’s changed my life. It made me realize how important it is, how important this job is to the kids, to everybody. Kids come here to have a good time, to not worry about what’s going on at home, and it’s so important to me to give them a fun opportunity to spend the day having fun and playing outside.”

Carlos Jeri, a counselor at the Invensys Foxboro Y’s Camp Wapawca, talks of a personal connection with one of the campers to whom camp served as a safe haven.

“We have campers who come in from orphanages or homes where they really don’t have parents,” said Jeri. “There was one camper who was having a particularly rough time, and he and I started talking and we formed a connection. He started telling me about his life and how camp was his escape from everything. We started to create a connection and I found out how much of an actual impact we made.”

Throughout their time at camp, each counselor wears a t-shirt which bears the words “role model.” Colin Maximiuk, a counselor at Camp Wiggi at the Bernon Family Y, considers what the term means to him.

“The idea of a role model to me means that I’m this figure that kids look up to,” said Maximiuk. “So throughout every day I’m acting the best that I can, so that the kids can learn to not only be as good as me, but better than me.”

Joe Milosh, a counselor and former camper of the North Attleboro Y’s Camp Elmwood, speaks on what he believes to be the importance of imparting the YMCA’s values to campers.

“It means a lot about how you’ll be when you grow up, and the type of person you want to be,” said Milosh. “I want to make sure that all the children are learning how to carry themselves in a respectful, kind way. And I think that’s what the core values do – they show children a way to act, and set guidelines for how you should be when you grow up.”

Hundreds of young people take part in the camp programs every summer, and whether they are already counselors or are working to become counselors, they contribute greatly to the Y. Through the Counselor-in-Training program, the Leader-in-Training program, and the Cadet program, there are many ways to join the Hockomock Area YMCA camps and forever positively influence the lives of kids in our communities.

Dean College Announces 2017 Summer Camp Schedule

Dean College is pleased to announce the creation of four summer camp options for high school students ages 14 and up, including sports broadcasting, sport management, forensics and stage combat.

Upon completion of the two-week camp, students will not only walk away with a unique learning experience, but will have earned three college credits.

“We are excited to offer these amazing programs that truly are one-of-a-kind opportunities. The camps are both fun and educational and having the chance to earn college credit really adds to their appeal,” says Gregg Chalk, Dean’s Vice President of Marketing and Business Development.

Each camp is designed to provide students with unmatched experiences, including instruction by leaders in their respective field, advice on the college admissions process from a Dean College admissions counselor (one-on-one consultation), college credit for successful completion of the course/camp, and behind the scenes access to Gillette stadium, WEEI Sports Radio, McCoy Stadium and other locations appropriate to the respective camp.

Both Sport Management camp and Stage Combat camp will take place July 10-21, 2017, with the Sports Broadcasting and Forensics camps happening July 24th through August 4, 2017.

“Every camp will have customized experiences embedded into them,” says Chalk. “For example, Sports Broadcasting will have the campers creating their own demo reel, announcing on Power 88 FM and actually doing live play-by-play at a Pawtucket Red Sox game. Similar experiences will be weaved into each camp.”

Overnight and day-only options are available. Housing for overnight campers will be provided by Dean College, with night and weekend activities included with room and board.

For pricing and to learn more information about Dean College summer camp offerings, visit www.dean.edu/summercamps.

Camping tips

The Mass.gov blog has a good set of tips on camping in Massachusetts.
Summer is here and it’s time to venture outside and make the most of the great outdoors. If you’re ready to leave behind the comforts and conveniences of home for a few days and explore the wilderness, camping is a fun activity the entire family can enjoy.
Massachusetts is home to at least 29 unique campgrounds with different open and close dates during the summer. Certain locations offer online reservations and can be made as late as one day prior to your arrival. Anyone 18 years old and over can make a reservation with a valid photo ID.

Hockomock YMCA Branches Hold Summer Camp Open House May 22 at 12:00 p.m.

Registration is now open for summer camp at the Hockomock Area YMCA. All three branches in Foxboro, North Attleboro, and Franklin will hold an open house this Sunday, May 22 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. This afternoon will be highlighted with activities for the children to participate in and get to experience Y Camp hands-on! The open house is designed to provide prospective campers with a chance to see the camp, meet camp directors, ask questions, and learn about the variety of summer day camps our YMCA offers.

As parents look for opportunities to keep their kids active this summer, the Franklin YMCA reminds caregivers that camp is among the best options for engaging kids in activities that will help develop their spirit, mind and body, while getting them outdoors in a safe environment. “Camping is synonymous with personal development. It provides kids with the opportunity to practice social and decision-making skills through new experiences,” says Jim Downs, vice president of youth & community development of the Hockomock Area YMCA. “Kids come to camp to develop friendships, learn skills in a new environment, and make memories that will last a lifetime.”

YMCA Camp provides exciting and educational summer camp options for school-age children, teens, and options for children with special needs.

Attending summer camp at the YMCA can impact youth and teens in several important ways:

  • Kids learn when given a break from their daily routine. Camp offers kids and teens productive “time away” from the troubling economic news they hear every day, as well as an independence they do not typically experience at home or in school.
  • Lifelong memories are made at camp. Camp Wigwanawan is the ideal environment for developing new skills, learning from other campers and counselors, and making new friends to share it all with.
  • Decision-making skills are learned through experience. At camp, kids and teens learn and practice how to make smart choices, solve problems, and work as a team toward common goals. These skills are essential to character development.
  • At camp, kids and teens develop confidence by trying and learning new things, including adventurous outdoor activities that can lead to healthy, life-long habits.
  • Camp is the perfect environment for increasing kids’ and teens’ awareness and appreciation of nature and the great outdoors.

Collectively, the nation’s largest providers of camping programs, YMCAs have operated summer camps for more than 100 years. Each year, YMCAs operate more than 2,000 community and regional YMCA day camps that serve 600,000 individual campers each summer, which includes about 120 specialty camps for kids with disabilities. An additional 1.5 million individuals participate in camp programs throughout the balance of the year in family camps, weekend retreats, and school camping.

Please visit www.hockymca.org or call the Franklin branch at 508.528.8708, the Foxboro branch at 508.772.1353, or the North Attleboro branch at 508.695.7001 to learn more.
