In the News: FHS students advocate for Tobacco21; more info on Acrylamide

"One group of Franklin High School girls is a leading youth voice in state government’s decision to raise the tobacco age to 21. 

The pending Tobacco21 bill would raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21, an issue that a group of Franklin students has been lobbying for since last year. Currently, about 180 municipalities across Massachusetts have already made this change. The legislation will force all 351 cities and towns on board. 

The students returned to the Statehouse again on Wednesday, but with a much more active role. They filmed and showed a video of their testimonies, before a formal ceremony in front of a large audience at the bottom of the grand staircase in the Statehouse. 

Advocates, legislators, senators, and others gathered to hear the Franklin High Students plead their case for this bill."

"Trouble is brewing for coffee lovers in California, where a judge ruled that sellers must post scary warnings about cancer risks. But how frightened should we be of a daily cup of joe? Not very, some scientists and available evidence seem to suggest. 

Scientific concerns about coffee have eased in recent years, and many studies even suggest it can help health. 

“At the minimum, coffee is neutral. If anything, there is fairly good evidence of the benefit of coffee on cancer,” said Dr. Edward Giovannucci, a nutrition expert at the Harvard School of Public Health. 

The World Health Organization’s cancer agency moved coffee off the “possible carcinogen” list two years ago, though it says evidence is insufficient to rule out any possible role."

"A Los Angeles judge has ruled that California law requires coffee companies to carry an ominous cancer warning label because of a chemical produced in the roasting process. 

Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle wrote in a proposed ruling Wednesday that Starbucks and other coffee companies failed to show that the threat from a chemical compound produced in the roasting process was insignificant. 

A nonprofit group had sued coffee roasters, distributors and retailers under a state law that requires warnings on a wide range of chemicals that can cause cancer. One of those chemicals is acrylamide, a carcinogen present in coffee. 

“While plaintiff offered evidence that consumption of coffee increases the risk of harm to the fetus, to infants, to children and to adults, defendants’ medical and epidemiology experts testified that they had no opinion on causation,” Berle wrote. “Defendants failed to satisfy their burden of proving by a preponderance of evidence that consumption of coffee confers a benefit to human health.”

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free 12-week program designed for cancer survivors and their families seeking to regain health, build strength, and connect with other cancer survivors. 

Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. Certified YMCA fitness instructors give personal individualized instruction and are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise, nutrition, and supportive cancer care. 

The program meets twice a week for 90 minutes, using traditional exercise methods to ease you back into fitness and help participants improve confidence and self-esteem.

"Why I'm running for Dana Farber:

Sometimes in life, a “Thank You” doesn't seem enough to convey how much you appreciate and treasure what someone has done for you.

In July of 2014, my mom, Jeanne Burchard was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. We chose Dana Farber for her treatment because of their excellent reputation. At the time of her diagnosis we were told that she had 2-2-1/2 years to live. Thanks to the treatment of Dr. Sinclair and the amazing nurses, my mom is still with us, and doing great. Thank you Dr. Sinclair and Dana Farber!

Fast forward to May of 2016. I had noticed that I had numerous enlarged lymph nodes. After many tests, my doctor told me that I had stage 3 Follicular Lymphoma. This was the last thing I was expecting but I had this unwavering feeling that I would be ok. Once again, our family chose Dana Farber.

We knew from our previous experience that Dana Farber treats the whole person ... not just the cancer. During my treatment, my caring nurse, Mary Beth Proulx, would sit with me while I needed to cry or talk about feelings I didn't quite understand. This was my safe place where I could let my defenses down and truly show how scared, confused and angry I was. I wanted to be strong and keep everything as normal as possible for my husband and 2 girls, but sometimes I needed to be vulnerable. Mary Beth helped me do that. My Lymphoma is now in remission and I feel awesome! Thank you Dr. Tahir, Mary Beth and Dana Farber!

This past May, my mother in law, Kathy Luccini, was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. Dana Farber and Dr. Sinclair, once again, were there for us. As Kathy began treatment, they treated her with respect by answering questions, involving her in treatment options and providing her with top-notch care. Kathy is doing great and back to playing golf! Thank you Dana Farber.

When I run, it's not only for my mom, Kathy and myself, but for all the people who have gone through this journey. This is one small way I can show my appreciation for the care and compassion we received.

On April 16, 2018, hundreds of Dana-Farber runners will take to the streets to participate in the 122nd Boston Marathon®. The DFMC team runs and raises funds with thousands of special people in mind. From Hopkinton to Boston, we carry thoughts of those people every step of the way.

"Somehow it seems that cancer finds its way into everyone’s lives in one way or another, even as early as high school. One group of Franklin High School students is raising awareness and money for cancer research, and many members are driven by their own stories. 

Franklin High juniors Teerithveen Pasricha and Nicole Sparages contacted to the Los Angeles- based organization, Connect 4 Cancer, early last school year to become a part or its effort. Since then, they’ve raised about $6,000 for organizations like Susan G. Komen, Dana-Farber, The American Cancer Society, and The Jimmy Fund. 

“We have a lot of personal cancer connections and we know a lot of people at school do too, so we thought it would be a really good thing to bring this community together,” said Pasricha."

The reading will take place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and features multiple guest readers from the area, including State Rep. Jeff Roy, D-Franklin, and local inventor and engineer John Berg. 

“I’m really excited about, I think it’s a really cool thing,” Berg said. 

Lured by Franklin’s work with electricity and engineering, Berg said he’s delighted to help in the reading."

Merging with Medway this year, Franklin’s Relay for Life will hold its annual kickoff event at Cole’s Tavern in Franklin on Jan. 30. 

Volunteer Tamra Waslewski said that with so many other fundraisers available, the Relay for Life has lost some of the steam it has had in years past. 

“Relay for Life used to be so important to all of the communities, and very well-attended. It was a blast,” she said. “Over the years it’s sort of dwindled down, and I think it’s because everyone’s fundraising and it’s just saturated.”

Scores from across the country are combined online during the month-long competition. Scores are tallied by both weight lifted, and donations collected.

"Cancer is no longer a death sentence and shouldn’t be taboo”

Via the social media feeds, a good Franklin story to share:

Franklin resident Susan Rosen sat slumped on her couch in a quiet house — her two children were at school — and let the news sink in: She had stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. 

“I’m never going to be a grandmother,” she told her husband through sobs. 

But that was four years ago. Susan, now 52, no longer views incurable cancer as a death sentence. The local wife and mother is one of a growing number of people managing the disease as a chronic illness, thanks to new, less toxic treatments that are tailored to each patient’s needs. 

“Things are getting better every day in regards to treatments,” Susan said. “This is the best I’ve felt in years.”

Franklin Resident to Run Boston Marathon for MassGeneral Hospital for Children Pediatric Cancer Team

Franklin resident Jacob Youmell will run in the 121st Boston Marathon on April 17st in support of MassGeneral Hospital for Children’s pediatric cancer team, Fighting Kids’ Cancer ... One Step at a Time. Youmell will join an estimated 30,000 runners along the 26.2 mile course that spans from Hopkinton to Boylston Street in Boston. The funds raised by Youmell will support cutting-edge research and quality of life programming - such as child life services and art and music therapy - which help pediatric cancer patients and their families cope emotionally and developmentally with their illnesses.

Youmell, the director of digital strategy at Emerson College, is running in honor of his parents who succumbed to cancer in 2005 and 2008 and his brother along with all survivors who overcame the disease. The team, made up of 102 runners - including former patients and parents, MGH employees and hospital supporters - has set a fundraising goal of $1 million.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of John Hancock’s partnership with the Mass General Marathon Program. Since it was formed in 1998, Mass General’s Fighting Kids’ Cancer...One Step at a Time has raised more than $12 million that directly support the pediatric hematology-oncology program.

“I have a unique perspective into the lives of children undergoing live saving therapy at MGHfC,” says Howard Weinstein, MD, chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at MGHfC and 17-year captain of the pediatric team. “Since the team’s inception, I’ve seen our runners get physically and emotionally involved in our mission to conquer childhood cancer. They go the extra mile and their support is vital to our continued holistic approach to cancer care.’

Due to parking limitations in downtown Franklin, staff and resources from the bus will be moved inside the main office branch, 21 Main St., Franklin, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20. "The ability of Massachusetts residents to access certain federal buildings and airplane departure gates in future years could depend on the success of a $62.2 million contract with a Colorado company hired to revamp the state's three-decade-old driver's license software system.

In 2010, the Hockomock Area YMCA was one of the first ten YMCAs in the country to launch this life changing initiative, partnering with the LIVESTRONG Foundation to help cancer survivors begin the journey toward recovery with the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. On average, 120 participants graduate from the program annually at the Hockomock Area YMCA. A recent survey at the Hockomock Area YMCA found that ninety-nine percent of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA participants said that the atmosphere of the Y supports them in their pursuit of health and well-being.

Part of the Hockomock Y’s commitment to strengthening community through healthy living, the program offers adults affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. The Hockomock Area YMCA is enrolling now for upcoming LIVESTRONG at the YMCA sessions at their branches in Foxboro, Franklin, and North Attleboro.

The PMC rides through Franklin on Saturday, Aug 6

"During its 36-year run, the Pan-Mass Challenge has raised more than a half-billion dollars to combat cancer - a feat likely far greater than Billy Starr, its founder and executive director, and dozens of friends would have expected when they started the annual bike ride in 1980. 

On Aug. 6 and 7, more than 200 locals from MetroWest are set to participate in the largest single athletic fundraiser in the country, according to PMC organizers. 

The two-day biking event raises money for adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. PMC is Dana-Farber’s largest single contributor, raising more than 58 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue."

"When the Hockomock YMCA's 10th annual triathlon kicks off this Sunday, it will count several cancer survivors - some of them first-time triathletes - among its competitors. 

The survivors - who will be working their way through a course that travels from Wrentham's Lake Pearl through Franklin and Norfolk - are members of the LIVESTRONG class at the Y's Foxborough branch. A total of 10 course participants, including some trainers and support staff, will be taking part. 

The idea came out of a discussion at one of the classes, which encourages physical well-being for cancer survivors. Breast cancer survivor Mary Waltuck, 68, had mentioned that she had participated in numerous triathlons, and other class members wanted to learn about her experiences."

In the News: Scouts planting for seniors, Franklin man shaves head for cancer

"Boy Scout Troop 126, in Franklin, has started its summer with service. 

A dozen Scouts from the troop spent their afternoon on May 14 planting vegetables in the garden for the residents at Franklin Health and Rehabilitation Center. 

The boys have built a relationship with the center and the residents in recent years, dropping in for a game of bingo and visiting on Veterans' Day. The gardening project included tomatoes, peppers, squash, kale and cantaloupe, which will be harvested for and eaten by the residents."

"Brooke Harrison, of Franklin, ran her first marathon May 1 in Providence, Rhode Island. 

Harrison is a freshman at Montrose School in Medfield. 

Harrison began training for the marathon last year when her father was diagnosed with cancer. 

“My dad’s diagnosis changed my perspective on a lot of things, and it inspired me to make the most out of life,” Harrison said. “I wanted to do something that would be challenging and motivate others who are trying to overcome obstacles in their lives.”

3rd Annual Fundraiser - The Treasured Chests Avon Walking Team

The Treasured Chests Avon Walking Team will hold it’s 3rd Annual Fundraiser at Waxy O’Connor’s in Foxboro. 

Please help support The Treasured Chests Team, which will be walking 39 miles over two days in the Avon Breast Cancer Walk to be held in Boston on July 9 and 10th. On May 12th at Waxy O’Connor’s there will be a live band, “South Street Six”, tons of treasures to win, door prizes, a 50/50, light appetizers and a cash bar. 

Admission is $20 per person. Waxy O’Connor’s is located at The Shops at Chestnut Green, 121 Main Street in Foxboro.
