"We’re excited to announce that our Sixth Annual HockomockSports.com Charity Soccer Classic will be on November 23rd at Attleboro High School. We currently run two charity events each year (soccer and basketball), and once again this year we will be raising money for Dana-Farber.

Last year, we had such a successful event that we were the top fundraising group for the Kick For Dana-Farber program. In each of the past two years, we’ve taken a Hockomock team on the field before a Revolution game, and then tickets to the game as well. The North Attleboro girls team were honored on the big screen before the game as HockomockSports.com was selected as the Revs “Hero of the Match.” We also won custom training tops that the Rocketeers received for their generous support to the fundraiser.

We are hoping to be one of the top fundraising groups again this season. Our event features a girls game and a boys game that features some of the top talent from the Hockomock League. All participants are selected strictly by our staff and do not have any connection to the official Hockomock League All Stars.

Hockomock Area YMCA Celebrates "Livestrong at the YMCA" Program

The Hockomock Area YMCA held its seventh annual LIVESTRONG at the YMCA celebration event on June 19 at Lake Pearl in Wrentham. The event celebrated the impact of the program and raised critical funding for the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program at the Hockomock Area YMCA. The event raised $36,710. The inspirational evening featured remarks from LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program alumni and the presentation of two awards, the Community Champion Award, given to Dr. Natalie Sinclair, and the Charlie Shannon Volunteer Award, given to John White.

The Community Champion Award recognizes individuals or groups whose engagement and leadership positively impact individuals, and their families in the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. This year, the Hockomock YMCA honored Dr. Natalie Sinclair with the award. Dr. Sinclair and her team at Dana Faber Brigham and Women’s in Milford have been instrumental in the growth of the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program by referring her patients to the program and supporting them throughout the entire program.

YMCA program instructor and LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program alumna Judy Ammidown presented the award to Dr. Sinclair and said, “Dr. Sinclair I want to thank you for all that you do for us on the cancer journey. For recognizing the value that LIVESTRONG at the YMCA can have for your patients as we work through that chaos that follows the cancer diagnosis.” Dr. Sinclair was not able to attend the event. 

Milford Regional Medical Center President & CEO Ed Kelly accepted the award on her behalf and shared prepared remarks from Dr. Sinclair, “This award is for all of my patients. Cancer cannot take your hope, your courage, or your strength away. I salute you.”

The Charlie Shannon Volunteer Award recognizes a LIVESTRONG at the YMCA volunteer whose commitment, dedication, passion, and leadership helps the participant’s progress through the program and reach their goals. This year’s award was given to John White. John worked in the biotechnology field for many years and worked on cancer research and potential treatments during this time. He is also a cancer survivor himself. John provides his valuable life experiences to the program participants and gives them a relatable figure because he has gone through the same things they have. 

Jackie Robison, YMCA staff member and LIVESTRONG program coordinator, presented the award to John, a North Attleboro resident, and said, “John made deep connections. He encouraged his fellow participants, gave them an ear when they needed to be heard, and at times made them laugh. John is an optimist who brought his inspiration, compassion, and, most importantly, hope to the participants.” John spoke on how his experience in the field helped him be a mentor and said, “I was offered an opportunity to mentor others and provide valuable resources and support from my years in biotechnology and connections in the pipeline to some of the most advanced research being done in targeted therapies.”

Following the presentation of the awards, Marsea McGonagle gave a testimonial on the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program and what it has meant to her and her family. Marsea is the sister of Stephanie Whooten, an alumna of the program and a Franklin resident who passed away in September 2018 after an 18 month battle with colon cancer. Marsea spoke on what the program meant to her sister and how much it impacted her and her family. She said, “As Steph’s family, we are so proud that Steph left her mark on the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, but it also left its mark on her. 

In just those 12 weeks, something magical happened between those four walls. Steph felt the power of the program so much that when she entered hospice this past July and she wrote her will, she designated a percentage of her estate to go to the Franklin Y’s LIVESTRONG program. Approaching death at just 27 years old, it was the next cancer fighter in her neighborhood that she was thinking about.”

The evening also included a check presentation from Golf Fights Cancer, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting cancer, to the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. Golf Fights Cancer sponsored Jackie Robison, the Y’s LIVESTRONG Program Coordinator, in the Boston Marathon. Jackie raised over $10,000 for the race and Golf Fights Cancer donated the money back to the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. Cheryl McGuire, Executive Director of Golf Fights Cancer, spoke about Jackie’s fundraising efforts and said, “Golf Fights Cancer is honored to have you as part of our 2019 team and we are thrilled to be able to empower you to raise the funds to give right back to the LIVESTRONG program.”

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA classes will enroll this Fall beginning in early September at Hockomock Area YMCA branches in Foxboro, Franklin and North Attleboro. "Kids in Franklin have shown that you don’t have to be big to accomplish great things. 

For the past 12 years, youths ages 3 to 14 have put their feet to work kicking cancer, pedaling their bikes each June in the Franklin PMC Kids Ride and putting their town in the third spot statewide for fundraising power. 

“We’ve been up there for the last several years,” says Sharon Baryluk, a Franklin mom who has been on the Franklin PMC Ride planning committee since the beginning. 

Her kids have aged out of the event, but she and her fellow organizers feel compelled to continue their mission: To encourage children to ride their bikes and give back to the community, “instilling the value of working for the benefit of others and promote athletic fitness and physical activity,” all while helping the Dana Farber Institute through its Jimmy Fund with the funding it needs for life-saving cancer research and treatment."

Performances are on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 12:30 p.m. at Bellingham High School, 60 Blackstone St., Bellingham. 

PEDC has cast six girls as Clara, for the first time having three younger dancers portray young Clara and three older dancers portray mature Clara. Each set of dancers will perform for one show.

"The winners of this year’s Nobel Prize for Medicine say they expect substantial advances toward treating cancer in the next several decades, although it is unlikely the disease could be eradicated. 

James Allison of the United States and Tasuku Honjo of Japan made the assessments at a Thursday news conference ahead of receiving the 9 million-kronor ($999,000) prize. 

They were named winners of the prize in October for their work in immunotherapy — activating the body’s natural defense system to fight tumors. 

“Soon we’ll get close with some cancers,” Allison said, citing progress against some forms including melanoma. But, he said, “the world will never be cancer-free.”

Since 2010, The Hockomock Area YMCA has been facilitating the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program and they are pleased to announce new classes for 2019.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free 12-week program designed for cancer survivors and their families seeking to regain health, build strength, and connect with other cancer survivors. Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. Certified YMCA fitness instructors give personal individualized instruction and are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise, nutrition, and supportive cancer care.

In the News: Project Pink Patch in Franklin; Circle of Friends Concert Oct 6

"Their members have an obligation to serve and protect, but caring is also big part of being on the Franklin Police force. 

For the first time, officers have the option to add a pink patch to their uniforms in order to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A few officers are already sporting the patches, but soon all of the department’s officers will be adorned with the powerful patch. 

Project Pink Patch, according to Sgt. Brian Johnson, was started on the West Coast. 

“There are a lot of area stations that do this,” said Johnson. “They ‘Pink it out’ they call it. They change the color scheme of the badge around and some even put the pink ribbon in there.”

In the News: Gilberti leads the Walk to End Breast Cancer; trend shows more major hurricanes coming over time

"Surviving cancer is always worth celebrating, and helping to turn potential tragedy into a party is something the American Cancer Society’s Anne Gilberti has taken to be part of her job. 

In 2014, Gilberti took part in Avon 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer. She wanted to continue the effort, but did not have someone to sponsor. 

“I didn’t really have a personal connection to breast cancer - I didn’t really know anyone with breast cancer,” she said. “Fast forward to the next year when the team I was part of was doing fundraising. That very night, I was waiting on my own biopsy and I was diagnosed with breast cancer.” 

Less than a year later, she didn’t realize she would be funding her own cause, as she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. At the time of her diagnosis, she was a mother to three children, and knew she needed to be there for them."

"The Atlantic’s warmer waters triggered the unusual number of major hurricanes last year, according to a new study that predicts the region could see a couple of extra whopper storms each year by the end of the century. 

Six major hurricanes — with winds of at least 111 mph — spun around the Atlantic last year, including Harvey, Irma and Maria that hit parts of the United States and the Caribbean. Since 2000, the Atlantic has averaged three major hurricanes a year. Before that the average was closer to two. 

It may go up to five to eight major hurricanes a year around the year 2100, according to a study in this week’s journal Science. 

“We will see more active hurricane seasons like 2017 in the future,” said lead author Hiro Murakami, climate scientist and hurricane expert at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration."

I have been training since June to participate in a huge charity event where all proceeds go to the Dana Farber Cancer center. Its an amazing night of amateur boxing and I am stepping into the ring to give hope for those who are fighting against cancer and to pay respect to those who have lost their fight to that awful disease.

Against the Tide - June 16

Join us for Against the Tide in 2018. Registration is now open! 

"Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) will be holding the statewide Metro-Boston Against the Tide for the 26th year on Saturday, June 16, 2018. Set against the backdrop of DCR's Hopkinton State Park, Against the Tide offers something for all outdoor enthusiasts. Participants can enjoy the pristine beach and water for the half-mile paddleboard, competitive and recreational 1-mile swims, and 2-mile kayak events, as well as the rolling, tree-lined paved course for both the USATF certified 5K and 10K runs, and the 3-mile fitness walk. 

All ages and abilities are welcome to choose from 1, 2, or 3 of these exciting activities. The event also offers an Aquathon “Splash and Dash” component, where participants “splash” in the competitive 1-mile swim and immediately “dash” in 5K or 10K run (chosen by the participant). 

Participants may register as an individual or as part of a team. Registration is $40 per adult per event activity and $25 per student per event activity. In the News: FHS students advocate for Tobacco21; more info on Acrylamide

"One group of Franklin High School girls is a leading youth voice in state government’s decision to raise the tobacco age to 21. 

The pending Tobacco21 bill would raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21, an issue that a group of Franklin students has been lobbying for since last year. Currently, about 180 municipalities across Massachusetts have already made this change. The legislation will force all 351 cities and towns on board. 

The students returned to the Statehouse again on Wednesday, but with a much more active role. They filmed and showed a video of their testimonies, before a formal ceremony in front of a large audience at the bottom of the grand staircase in the Statehouse. 

Advocates, legislators, senators, and others gathered to hear the Franklin High Students plead their case for this bill."

"Trouble is brewing for coffee lovers in California, where a judge ruled that sellers must post scary warnings about cancer risks. But how frightened should we be of a daily cup of joe? Not very, some scientists and available evidence seem to suggest. 

Scientific concerns about coffee have eased in recent years, and many studies even suggest it can help health. 

“At the minimum, coffee is neutral. If anything, there is fairly good evidence of the benefit of coffee on cancer,” said Dr. Edward Giovannucci, a nutrition expert at the Harvard School of Public Health. 

The World Health Organization’s cancer agency moved coffee off the “possible carcinogen” list two years ago, though it says evidence is insufficient to rule out any possible role."

"A Los Angeles judge has ruled that California law requires coffee companies to carry an ominous cancer warning label because of a chemical produced in the roasting process. 

Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle wrote in a proposed ruling Wednesday that Starbucks and other coffee companies failed to show that the threat from a chemical compound produced in the roasting process was insignificant. 

A nonprofit group had sued coffee roasters, distributors and retailers under a state law that requires warnings on a wide range of chemicals that can cause cancer. One of those chemicals is acrylamide, a carcinogen present in coffee. 

“While plaintiff offered evidence that consumption of coffee increases the risk of harm to the fetus, to infants, to children and to adults, defendants’ medical and epidemiology experts testified that they had no opinion on causation,” Berle wrote. “Defendants failed to satisfy their burden of proving by a preponderance of evidence that consumption of coffee confers a benefit to human health.”

Announcing Spring Livestrong at the YMCA

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free 12-week program designed for cancer survivors and their families seeking to regain health, build strength, and connect with other cancer survivors. 

Our goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. Certified YMCA fitness instructors give personal individualized instruction and are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise, nutrition, and supportive cancer care. 

The program meets twice a week for 90 minutes, using traditional exercise methods to ease you back into fitness and help participants improve confidence and self-esteem.

"Why I'm running for Dana Farber:

Sometimes in life, a “Thank You” doesn't seem enough to convey how much you appreciate and treasure what someone has done for you.

In July of 2014, my mom, Jeanne Burchard was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. We chose Dana Farber for her treatment because of their excellent reputation. At the time of her diagnosis we were told that she had 2-2-1/2 years to live. Thanks to the treatment of Dr. Sinclair and the amazing nurses, my mom is still with us, and doing great. Thank you Dr. Sinclair and Dana Farber!

Fast forward to May of 2016. I had noticed that I had numerous enlarged lymph nodes. After many tests, my doctor told me that I had stage 3 Follicular Lymphoma. This was the last thing I was expecting but I had this unwavering feeling that I would be ok. Once again, our family chose Dana Farber.

We knew from our previous experience that Dana Farber treats the whole person ... not just the cancer. During my treatment, my caring nurse, Mary Beth Proulx, would sit with me while I needed to cry or talk about feelings I didn't quite understand. This was my safe place where I could let my defenses down and truly show how scared, confused and angry I was. I wanted to be strong and keep everything as normal as possible for my husband and 2 girls, but sometimes I needed to be vulnerable. Mary Beth helped me do that. My Lymphoma is now in remission and I feel awesome! Thank you Dr. Tahir, Mary Beth and Dana Farber!

This past May, my mother in law, Kathy Luccini, was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer. Dana Farber and Dr. Sinclair, once again, were there for us. As Kathy began treatment, they treated her with respect by answering questions, involving her in treatment options and providing her with top-notch care. Kathy is doing great and back to playing golf! Thank you Dana Farber.

When I run, it's not only for my mom, Kathy and myself, but for all the people who have gone through this journey. This is one small way I can show my appreciation for the care and compassion we received.

On April 16, 2018, hundreds of Dana-Farber runners will take to the streets to participate in the 122nd Boston Marathon®. The DFMC team runs and raises funds with thousands of special people in mind. From Hopkinton to Boston, we carry thoughts of those people every step of the way.

"Somehow it seems that cancer finds its way into everyone’s lives in one way or another, even as early as high school. One group of Franklin High School students is raising awareness and money for cancer research, and many members are driven by their own stories. 

Franklin High juniors Teerithveen Pasricha and Nicole Sparages contacted to the Los Angeles- based organization, Connect 4 Cancer, early last school year to become a part or its effort. Since then, they’ve raised about $6,000 for organizations like Susan G. Komen, Dana-Farber, The American Cancer Society, and The Jimmy Fund. 

“We have a lot of personal cancer connections and we know a lot of people at school do too, so we thought it would be a really good thing to bring this community together,” said Pasricha."

In the News: Franklin readathon at Library; Relay for Life planning underway

"For the first time, the library will host a public reading of the autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, the town’s namesake. 

The reading will take place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and features multiple guest readers from the area, including State Rep. Jeff Roy, D-Franklin, and local inventor and engineer John Berg. 

“I’m really excited about, I think it’s a really cool thing,” Berg said. 

Lured by Franklin’s work with electricity and engineering, Berg said he’s delighted to help in the reading."

"For anyone looking to make a difference this year, and have a good time doing it, the Relay for Life is coming up fast. 

Merging with Medway this year, Franklin’s Relay for Life will hold its annual kickoff event at Cole’s Tavern in Franklin on Jan. 30. 

Volunteer Tamra Waslewski said that with so many other fundraisers available, the Relay for Life has lost some of the steam it has had in years past. 

“Relay for Life used to be so important to all of the communities, and very well-attended. It was a blast,” she said. “Over the years it’s sort of dwindled down, and I think it’s because everyone’s fundraising and it’s just saturated.”

"The local version of the nationwide “Kilos for a Cure” competition that uses its profits to fund research for the American Cancer Society will be hosted again by RWL Weightlifting. 

Scores from across the country are combined online during the month-long competition. Scores are tallied by both weight lifted, and donations collected. 

To sign up for the competition, visit The American Cancer Society website and search “Kilos for a Cure.” The competition starts on Oct. 1, when the full workout will be announced. All results must be reported by Oct. 31."
