National Purple Heart Day Celebrated on August 7th!

National Purple Heart Day Celebrated on August 7th!

Quilts of Valor also Awarded

Franklin celebrated its second Purple Heart Day as a Purple Heart Community on Saturday, August 7 with a ceremony and luncheon hosted by the Elks Lodge on Pond Street.

The Purple Heart is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military on or after April 5, 1917. The Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to U.S. military members.

Along with recognizing 18 Purple Heart recipients from Franklin, the Quilts of Valor Foundation awarded Quilts of Valor to eight Franklin veterans. The personalized quilts were presented by Theresa Perreault, Quilts of Valor Massachusetts State Coordinator.

Franklin fire donation information

"The Franklin MA Lions Club and Franklin Elks Lodge #2136 are working with the Red Cross to help families affected by today’s fire. We have been told the best donations right now are that of gift cards to various clothing, drug stores, food and restaurants. Please reach out to Franklin Lions to make your donation.
Update: The Lions met this evening. We have had an outpouring for clothing donations. For this reason we have decided to do a fund-drive to turn clothing and cloth material such as shoes, curtains, stuffed animals, blankets, etc into cash. We hope to collect 5000lbs by July 7th. We currently will pick up but are working on drop off locations for bags.
Update: we have set up an account with Rockland Trust: Franklin Lions Disaster Fund. Donations can be made there. 100% will be used to assist families to get back on their feet. In addition at the downtown Franklin branch across from post office is a drop box for gift cards. Gift cards and checks can also be mailed to
  • Franklin Lions
    PO Box 3,
    Franklin , MA.
The Red Cross is still trying to reach all 36 families. If you know of a family or are a family affected by today’s fire. Please contact the Red Cross at 1-800-564-1234.

"what action, if any, will be taken by humans and when"

"Rising temperatures, eroding coastlines, fearsome storms and disappearing species.

All of these issues are raising alarm among people concerned about the specter of climate change.

“It’s not too late, but we’re not talking the distant future. We’re talking right now,” said Richard Halpern, chairman of the Franklin Democratic Town Committee’s events subcommittee.

Halpern is the force behind planning for an upcoming discussion on the subject the organization is sponsoring.

“Franklin 2050: The Climate Crisis” is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Elks Lodge, 1077 Pond St."

Franklin 2050: The Climate Crisis - Oct 17

Climate change is real; you can see it happening all around us, not just in America but on a global scale. Improbable weather events are happening in the most unlikely places. Yet it’s hard to get one’s head around it and figure out what the solution is.

The 2019 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report is a call to action to avert the changes. The IPCC and 97% of climate scientists worldwide say the changes that are necessary to avert disaster are stark: 50% reduction in carbon emissions is needed by 2030, and net carbon effect by 2050.

But we have an Administration in denial, and mass media that’s more concerned with the latest tweet than explaining what’s going on in the climate, and what can be done about it by citizens in cities and towns in the Commonwealth.

How will the average citizen learn about what can be done to minimize the effects?

Several of us from Franklin got together along with the Franklin Democratic Town Committee, 350 Massachusetts for a Better Future, and Massachusetts Climate Action Network to plan a community-wide educational forum to examine the causes and effects policy implications, and actions to take at the town and state levels.

It’s called “Franklin 2050: The Climate Crisis” and it’s happening Thursday, October 17 at 7:00 PM at Franklin Elks 1077 Pond Street in Franklin.

Hope to see you there in this free forum event!

Elks present large US Flag to Franklin Fire Dept.

"We proudly presented the Franklin Fire Department with a 40 x 25 foot American Flag last night before our Lodge Meeting! ️

We can not THANK the Franklin Fire Department enough for all of their dedication and hard work to our community and now they can have this Flag to proudly wave at Community and Veterans Events.
This was made possible by the use of the 150th Anniversary Grant from Grand Lodge as well as Lodge fundraisers.
Thank you to our Secretary, Michele and our Organist, Frank for making this possible! #ElksCareElksShare

Franklin Elks Lodge - FREE Soccer Shoot for kids 13 and under

The Franklin Elks Lodge is hosting a FREE Soccer Shoot for kids 13 and under on October 1st at the King Street Memorial Park in Franklin.

This is an event that every State in the US hosts for the Elks. It starts at a Lodge Level, then winners advance to District, then to State - with a chance to win Nationally! It is a lot of fun and a great way for kids to connect and compete. There are different age groups for the kids.

The only thing we ask is that parents bring the birth certificates at time of registration to confirm the age. There is no minimum skill levels to participate. Older kids shoot at a grid that is on a goal and are tallied by points made for each section. Young ones are scored on kicking the ball through cones.

In the News: Elks place flag garden, Town Council hears about maintenance

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the American flag unfurled, it seemed, from every available space. It hung by doorways and from windows, fluttered on flag poles and vehicle antennas, was displayed on shirts and hats, and waved in the hands of those gathered at countless vigils - a symbol of solidarity, defiance, and a nation's resolve not to stand down from all for which it stands.
So, it is fitting that the flag should figure so prominently in the Franklin Elks' tribute to those who were lost on 9/11 as the 15th anniversary of that day is marked this weekend."

"The Town Council this week heard about a program aimed at tracking maintenance efforts in school and municipal buildings.
Council members have been critical of the town's facilities department in the past, calling for more transparency and accountability.
The council heard from a representative of the firm SchoolDude on Sept. 7 about that company's preventive maintenance program. Two school buildings - the Davis-Thayer and Kennedy elementary schools - are piloting the program, which inventories all the equipment in the building and sets up a maintenance schedule."
