Franklin Almanac arrives at Franklin TV

There’s a new program in town. In fact, it’s all about the town. At Franklin TV we’ve launched our very own news-magazine program, Franklin Almanac. Like an actual almanac of information, it’s a compendium– of life in Franklin, produced and hosted (and written and edited) by our TV journalist Polikseni Manxhari.

See Almanac this week on All-Access TV.  Almanac also has an introductory run weekdays at noon on our TownHall TV channel, Comcast11/Verizon29.

As TV news pioneer Edward R. Murrow opined, reporting the news on TV is like writing with a five hundred pound pencil. There’s a lot of preparation and location work that goes into producing even a single story. With our pilot program done and on the record, we are already ramping up for our second episode in mid-January. Our plan is for Almanac to be a regularly scheduled program in 2017 with new episodes every two weeks. Almanac will offer a review of key recent events as well as a look ahead to the upcoming, the new and the notable.

As we begin our new news endeavor, we want to give a nod of appreciation to Franklin’s volunteer Information Director, Steve Sherlock and his invaluable website Franklin Matters. In our pilot episode you’ll get to meet Steve as he sits down with Polikseni to offer his insights on citizen journalism, local news and information.

Okay, everyone– lift that pencil– on three.

Let's celebrate 10 Years by honoring you, the loyal readers, and help Franklin, MA nonprofits

How does one celebrate that Franklin MAtters has reached 10 years of providing timely and accurate information to Franklin residents? By choosing to honor you, the loyal readers, with a contribution to your choice of Franklin nonprofit.

First

Part A: 5 of the longest 200 email subscribers were selected randomly. They’ll receive notification of this selection and a request to identify a Franklin nonprofit. A $50 contribution to that *qualified nonprofit* will be made in their name.

Part B: They will also receive a 2017 calendar published by the Franklin Historical Museum.

Second

5 of the email subscribers who sign up during the month of November will also be randomly selected to receive a copy of the 2017 calendar published by the Franklin Historical Museum.

How to subscribe?

If you are not already subscribed to receive the daily email from Franklin Matters, please consider doing so. Why?

  • You won't miss any of the good stuff
  • It is free

You can subscribe here  http://www.franklinmatters.org/p/welcome.html

This is especially true for those who follow Franklin MAtters on Facebook. Facebook filters what you see and that filtering means you do not see all that is published. One email, sent daily ensures you have access to all the information that matters to Franklin.

Franklin News from around the social media

  • On Facebook, Jeff Roy posted about the FHS Mock Trial team winning their first case. FHS Teacher Mike Walsh added that
"What Jeff Roy neglected to mention is that he has been volunteering his time to help us prepare for this complicated case. Meant a lot to the kids that you came to cheer them on today."

Delighted to see some talented young litigators from Franklin High School try a case in the Marlborough District Court....

Boston Globe shows a Franklin page

Yes, there is a "Your Town" Franklin page! A recent conversation with Globe Regional Editor David K Dahl, revealed the news and he followed up with a link.

You can view the new page here: http://yourtown.boston.com/franklin

It will aggregate information as published by the Globe and other identified sources (yes, this site is one of them!).

Franklin has two newspapers

Summer time. No school, time for family vacations, time for competition to heat up in the free paper space in Franklin. Yes, it appears that way.

We just returned from a long weekend to find two local papers in our mail. One I am familiar with. Franklin's Local Town Pages has been delivered to Franklin's residents monthly since December 2010. The JN Media Franklin News looked similar. Both delivered as 24 pages.

Many of the ads were the same in both, maybe the competition will be good for the local businesses!

Time will tell if the 'new' paper will stick around. Franklin has seen papers come and go after one edition. The Franklin Local Town Pages is the longest to stick around thus far.

Note: I do get paid a nominal amount for my contributions to the Franklin Local Town Pages.

A warm welcome for the Franklin Town News!

The arrival this week of the new Franklin Town News is a good development for Franklin. You should already be aware that while at one time many years ago Franklin did have its own newspaper (The Sentinel), we get coverage by the Milford Daily News and the occasionally from the Boston Globe West edition.

The current reporter for the Milford Daily News, Brian Benson, I think is doing very well. He is covering a lot of Franklin and covering it well. He is also publishing information in advance of a meeting which prior reporters had not done.

Franklin also is covered by the Wicked Local or Franklin Gazette. Covered is an appropriate term as this is the paper tossed in the driveway weekly. As I walk around town, I find a lot of them simply left there. The news contained inside is all re-purposed from what has been published in the Milford Daily News.

Hence, the need for Franklin MAtters. I publish here all the information from the town meetings (Town Council, School Committee, etc.) that I can participate in. This information is meant to be accurate and timely. You help me if you find I make a mistake so the accuracy is good. I provide links to documents and the documents themselves to make the information that may be on the Franklin website, easier to get at and use.

Now, the Franklin Town News comes along and will provide a new communication channel to the residents of Franklin. Supported by ad revenue and mailed directly to residents, this ensures a better chance of getting to everyone than the news or websites can do today. I welcome the Franklin Town News.

  • Any Franklin business can benefit from advertising in this publication. The target market is what you are always looking for. If you are doing business in Franklin, the target market is provided for you.
  • Any Franklin organization can benefit from publishing an information article. The monthly timing is the only hindrance but with proper planning, the mailing at the beginning of the month can announce your event during the coming month or set the stage for a future month. There is also a website where you can read the paper online, as well as a calendar which can be updated more frequently than monthly. As the awareness grows, these should be more useful in getting the word out.

Why?
An informed community will make good decisions on election day.

Note:
I have no formal business relationship with Franklin Town News. I have and anticipate continuing to submit an article or two for each issue on behalf of Franklin MAtters or the Franklin Food Pantry.

If your business or non-profit would like advice on how to leverage Franklin Town News (or other communication channels) to spread your information, please reach out and contact me. I am open to sharing what I know and have learned.

The new Franklin Town News arrived in my mailbox today. I think it looks pretty good for a first edition. I look forward to seeing next month's issue already.

Print extras in today's Milford Daily News

Sent to you by Steve Sherlock via Google Reader:

via The Milford Daily News News RSS by Staff reports on 11/20/10

Milford Daily news front page 11/20/10
Every day, The Milford Daily News prints stories you will not find anywhere else. In today's edition, read about a lockdown drill at Hopedale Junior-Senior High School; talk of setting up a nonprofit to run Franklin's cable TV studio; and columnist Lenny Megliola's take on the Celtics' Kevin Durant.

Things you can do from here:

There are three good advantages for those folks in Franklin. MA and beyond who want to keep up with what happens in Franklin.

First, you can visit Franklin Matters and get the information about the business of Franklin, everyday in one place.

Second, you have an option to subscribe via RSS feed or email, or just visit the site from a bookmark or list of favorites. If you want to skip the daily dose and go right to the weekly summary, you can get that either via RSS, email, or iTunes.

Third, while my colleagues at the Milford Daily News are out to sell something, I am not. So when I report from the Town Council or School Committee meeting you get all the information available from the meeting as it is discussed. You don't need to wait until Saturday to have to buy the paper to find out that Franklin is considering establishing a non-profit 501(c)3 entity to run the cable feeds for the town.

Your choice to stay informed on all the business of Franklin.
Because Franklin MAtters!

New paper coming to Franklin

Yes, the Milford Daily News and Wicked Local/Franklin Gazette will get some competition.

I met with Chuck Tashjan of Our Town Publishing recently to discuss his new expansion into Franklin. He has already been publishing a monthly for Medway-Millis and expanded to Norwood earlier this year.

You can view the online version of these papers here:

He is looking to do a monthly newspaper for Franklin beginning in December. The newspaper (likely 12-16 pages) will be delivered via postal mail (not thrown in your driveway).

Contact Chuck, his office number is 508-533-4588

Industry: Safe Lifting Leadership Award

In our ongoing series on local businesses, I find this press release appropriate for a couple of reasons.

1 - a local company has created a portal to work the bigger issue (safe lifting)
2 - as part of that portal, they select someone doing the right thing (the award winner)

This is a win/win in my book. Congrats to Liko for sponsoring this award and for Gundersen for winning it.

Franklin, MA – March 17, 2009 – The pro bono healthcare injury prevention website Safe Lifting Portal (http://www.safeliftingportal.com/), has announced that its newly instituted Safe Lifting Leadership Award has been presented to Gundersen Lutheran Health System of La Crosse, Wisconsin. The award was given in recognition of Gundersen Lutheran’s outstanding accomplishments in safe patient handling, safe lifting, and caregiver injury prevention.

A DVD describing the hospital’s accomplishments can be ordered from http://www.safeliftingportal.com/gundersen-lutheran/

Gundersen Lutheran Health System includes a 325-bed teaching hospital and a Level II Trauma Center. As one of the leading medical facilities in the mid-west, the health system has received eleven top 100 designations in as many years. It serves patients throughout western Wisconsin, northeastern Iowa, and southeastern Minnesota, providing care in 19 counties.

In 2003, Gundersen Lutheran Health System initiated a patient and staff injury prevention program. Key components of the program included installation of ceiling lifts to transfer patients, an extensive staff orientation and training program, and on-going monitoring of usage compliance. The ceiling lifts were installed in units hospital-wide, including intensive care, coronary care, rehabilitation and PT, pediatrics, morgue, diagnostic areas, and the OB/GYN water birth room.

Among the more significant results of the program have been substantial decreases in injury rates, reduced workers’ compensation costs, and less employee lost time and restricted time. The program has also increased staff retention rates and proved to be an excellent staff recruitment tool.

Emphasizing Gundersen Lutheran’s firm commitment to patient and employee safety, Gary Brunslik, Manager of Safety, commented, “Preventing staff injury is good business from the financial standpoint, but also, it is the right thing to do."
Kathy Weitekamp, RN, BSN, Care Manager, went on to say, “We’ve been able to show a 57% decrease in the number of patient handling claims, which we feel is pretty significant. Lost time has gone down 78% and restricted time has gone down 81%, so we’re very pleased. Our ceiling lift return on investment has been less than three years."
Dr. William Scorby, Medical Director for Employee Health, added, "We also see the safe lifting program as playing an important role in staff retention and recruiting - keeping our experienced nurses safe and injury free while attracting new nurses trained in safe lifting techniques to Gundersen Lutheran." The objective of the Safe Lifting Leadership Award is to encourage other institutions to follow the lead of “best practices” institutions in their attempts to instill permanent, sustainable culture change – a so-called “culture of safety” – within their organizations. Patient safety, advocacy for healthcare excellence, successful implementation of safe lifting initiatives, and willingness to share results and assist other institutions are among key evaluation criteria for the award.
