Governor wants to reimage downtowns; offers businesses a $4K hiring bonus

Charlie Baker told the breakfast gathering. “We need to start the process of reimagining the placemaking of downtowns so they can thrive and be successful in what will be a slightly different world in many cases and a significantly different world in some cases.”

Baker plans to file an economic development bill to aid downtowns struggling amid the work-from-home pattern that took hold during the pandemic – and seems here to stay, at least in some form. The Legislature deep-sixed a downtown aid package Baker filed last year. Details of the new proposal have not been revealed, but the Globe said Baker expects to propose using a combination of bonding and the $2 billion in unspent American Rescue Plan Act money to fund the plan. "

"FRUSTRATED AT the disconnect in Massachusetts between available jobs and available employees, the Baker administration is offering for-profit and non-profit employers $4,000 for each new worker they hire this year.

The goal of the HireNow program is to give employers an incentive to recruit and train workers who they normally would not bring in for an interview because of their lack of skills. “This is a great opportunity to say there’s no experience needed,” said Rosalin Acosta, the governor’s secretary of labor and workforce development. She unveiled the program along with Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito at a press conference Wednesday at LabCentral, a Cambridge-based incubator in the biotech and life sciences sectors."

Franklin Public Schools is looking for substitute teachers - Is that a role for you?

"We are delighted that you are considering applying to become a substitute teacher.

The work of our substitute teachers is an essential function to the smooth operation of our programs and we value that contribution. Without the support and dedication of our substitute teachers and staff, our educational program would be greatly hampered.

We place the care of our students in their hands daily. Substitute teaching can be an ideal way to supplement your income while setting your own schedule.  Improve your classroom skills as you try out the different schools, grade levels and instructional practices.

Ideally a teaching license and experience working with children is always preferred, however we will consider those applicants with a post high school education, a willingness to learn, compassion, energy and of course, a love for working with children.

Please review the information below for an overview of our school system and the substitute teacher's role.
Interested substitutes may apply by submitting a cover letter along with a resume to recruit@franklinps.net or stop by the HR Office to complete an application between the hours of 8 AM and 4 PM Monday through Friday."

Franklin Public Schools, MA: still looking to hire qualified candidates

FPS is hiring for a variety of positions districtwide.

We are seeking substitute teachers, school nurses, educational support professionals and more.

View the full list of employment opportunities here: https://t.co/jchQ1XRW0J

Shared from Twitter:  https://twitter.com/FranklinPSNews/status/1430643947274133506?s=03

The list of employment opportunities can also be found here

Note: The School Committee and eventually the Town Council approved the budget to operate the school district. That authorization includes a set number of positions to fill, only a few of which were net new positions to the district. This continued hiring is to fill open slots created  by retirements, resignations and personnel which the district determined not to renew the contracts of. "New" teachers may be new to the district, they are not (aside from the few mentioned) new positions.

Recap: School Committee meeting - 8/24/21

Quick Recap:
  • The School Committee voted to adjust the agenda removing the mask policy from discussion for now as the DESE decision on masks was made earlier during the day and takes precedence. Comment time was provided and extended to accommodate the antivaccine folks
  • In regular business, the handbooks modified for this school year were approved unanimously. Health and Safety was split into a separate section to acknowledge the COVID-19 protocols, With the approval, the handbooks will be distributed to the families in advance of school opening this year.
  • Chair Bergen took a couple of minutes to thank those who have taken out papers to run for School Committee, letting them know this is an apolitical position, separate from the Town in many ways, there is an 8 hour course required to provide insights on how to operate successfully and legally within the guidelines. A good thing to make folks aware of. At least one successful candidate last time was even aware of the two meeting a month commitment until after they were elected. It is better to be prepared.
