Franklin Public Schools: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee schedules "Deep Dive" Nov 19

Equity Statement
Vision (Hopes and dreams for the future)
  • Franklin Public Schools is committed, through its educational mission, to building an anti-biased and socially-just school system. Members of our school community commit to the process of listening, learning, acting, and reflecting in order to
    • affirm the diversity among community members;
    • promote equity and accountability by providing resources and opportunities and reducing barriers to success;
    • foster a safe and inclusive school environment so that each student and faculty/staff member truly belongs and is empowered to participate in decision-making.
  • As a system and as individuals, we are responsible for proactively taking steps to prevent bias; similarly we are responsible for illuminating and addressing bias and discrimination when incidents occur. As a result, each student in Franklin Public Schools will have equitable opportunities to achieve Franklin’s Portrait of a Graduate.   https://www.franklinps.net/sites/g/files/vyhlif4431/f/uploads/portrait_of_a_graduate_.pdf

Definitions
  • Diversity is a reflection of the uniqueness of an individual’s identity, thoughts, ideas, perspectives, and values, and the fluidity through which each may evolve. Some examples include, but are not limited to, a person’s race, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, religious beliefs, culture, national origin, disability and cognitive styles.
  • Equity involves each individual being able to attain the attributes of Franklin’s Portrait of a Graduate.
  • Inclusion is consistently ensuring that individuals belong in the school community by authentically seeking out, valuing, and respecting their input particularly regarding decisions that affect theirs and others’ lives.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Deep Dive - Nov 19, 2022

The Franklin Public School District invites our community to attend the D.E.I. Deep Dives and engage in collaborative dialogue on November 19, 2022 10 AM – 11:30 AM, at the Franklin Public Library in the 1st-floor Meeting Room (School Street Entrance).

Following a brief presentation, attendees will be able to engage in a structured, authentic and informative conversation with the District Administration, facilitated by the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Director Heidi Harris. This session will focus on various areas of improvement related to the Culture and Climate portion of our Equity Audit.
This session will focus on various areas of improvement related to the Culture and Climate portion of our Equity Audit and will help inform the District’s Equity Action Plan as it is developed throughout the 2022-2023 school year. We encourage attendees to review the presentation slides from the October 25th, 2022 School Committee D.E.I. Presentation in advance, however, it is not required!
This is a great opportunity for families, faculty, students, and members of the greater Franklin Community to learn more about how our D.E.I. efforts support the development of the attributes associated with our Portrait of a Graduate, whilst fostering a safe and inclusive school community.

Meet-Greet with finalist for DEI Director - May 3, 2022

Franklin Public Schools has been actively conducting a search for our Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. A committee consisting of teachers, parents, district administrators and School Committee was established to conduct initial interviews. After much thoughtful discussion, the committee came to consensus that there was one candidate who rose to the top as an exceptional leader and who they recommended to move forward in the process. The group announced earlier this month that Heidi Harris is the finalist for the position.

We encourage parents and guardians to come meet Ms. Harris on Tuesday, May 3rd from 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM in the 2nd floor Council Chambers of the Municipal Building (355 East Central Street, Franklin, MA).

Ms. Harris will be available to discuss her background and answer questions.

"we can celebrate both our differences and our similarities"

The analogy of "windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors" struck me when I heard it at the School Committee meeting Feb 8 and then again at the Town Council meeting Feb 16. I was delighted to find my eyes caught a reference to this in my Twitter stream.

Via Debbie Reese (https://twitter.com/debreese), we find that Reading is Fundamental (https://www.rif.org/) shared a re-print of the original article by Rudine Sims Bishop published in 1990.

"Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books."

FM #735-736-737 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, numbers 735-736-737 in the series.

This session shares part of the Franklin, MA Town Council meeting held on Wednesday, February 16, 2022.

I’ve split the three hour and 10 minute meeting into three (3) logical segments:

Recap: Town Council views 4 police new hires, discusses Dean neighborhood parking issue; hears about diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the schools

Quick recap:
  • Four new hires for the Police Dept. were introduced to the community when they were sworn in publicly at the Town Council meeting Wednesday night. They were pinned by family members
  • Chief TJ Lynch provided a recap of the Dean College & West St neighborhood parking issues and Lt Riley provided an update on the recent efforts to quantify the problems. Ultimately, this was referred to the Economic Development Subcommittee for further evaluation on a possible increase of parking fees
  • Supt Sara Ahern and Asst Supt Lucas Giguere provided a summary of the diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts underway across the Franklin Public Schools. A slightly longer version of the presentation was held at the School Committee meeting on Feb 8
  • Town Administrator Jamie Hellen was reviewed and provided feedback as "exemplary" during the prior two year period, primarily during the pandemic
  • The fiscal policies were modified slightly, one with the inclusion of the debt stabilization policy developed during 2021, and two with some adjustments on where the funds would be applied (operational budget vs. stabilization fund in the case of the hotel receipts)
Photos captured during the meeting can be found in one album
