MindShift: "How to Choose the Best Face Mask for Your Kids"

MindShift (@MindShiftKQED) tweeted on Mon, Aug 30, 2021:
Experts agree that the most important thing in selecting masks is to choose one that a child will actually wear properly all day long. https://t.co/aY4VKYP5Wn

"Which masks are best to keep kids safe? It's a question on many parents' minds as students return to in-person school amid a huge wave of coronavirus infections. Masking is a key safety measure in schools for all kids, especially for children too young to be eligible for any COVID-19 vaccine.

A recent study involving 100 school districts and 14 charter schools in North Carolina found that masks were effective at preventing in-school transmission of COVID-19 — even with physical distancing of less than 3 feet.

We asked several experts what parents should consider when it comes to masks for their kids. They all agreed that the most important thing is to choose one that a child will actually wear properly all day long."

Franklin PMC Kids Ride shifts gears to virtual ride

"After initial plans to wheel back to an in-person event, the 15th annual PMC Franklin Kids Ride has backpedaled to being a fully virtual undertaking due to concerns about the latest COVID-19 surge.

"Sadly, due to delta (variant) and the increase in cases, PMC corporate decided to make all rides virtual and ride re-imagined," said one of the Franklin ride's organizers, Nancy Brogan, via email on Monday. "We want to keep them safe and healthy."

This event will still go off on the same day, just in a different direction."

Finding Easy Walks Wherever You Are with Marjorie Turner Hollman,Wednesday, December 9, 7:00 p.m.Finding Easy Walks

Getting outdoors can be exciting and challenging. For some, it's especially challenging. You, or those you love, may have health and/or mobility issues that preclude venturing onto rocky or rooty trails. Your children may have special needs. You may have toddlers, or older parents who can no longer venture onto the demanding trails they used to.

If you are like many these days, you are spending a lot more time outdoors. Getting out on trails has taken on new appeal. But do you worry about finding a safe place to park when you consider visiting a local trail? What are the best clothes to wear? Things to bring with you? Regardless of your challenges, the outdoors is not off-limits.

"How do you find all these trails?" Finding Easy Walks Wherever You Are is the answer. You'll learn how to discover Easy Walks when visiting a new area, find new places to walk nearby as well, and so much more. Author Marjorie Turner Hollman loves the outdoors, and has completed three guides to Easy Walking trails in Massachusetts. With limited mobility, she uses hiking poles when heading outdoors. She has been published in local, regional, and national publications. For more information, please visit https://marjorieturner.com/easy-walks/ .

Franklin Public Library Book Club, Tuesday, December 22, 7:00 p.m.Born A Crime

The book for discussion is Born a Crime, by Trevor Noah.

Trevor Noah's unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents' indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa's tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man's relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother--his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life.

To reserve a copy of the book or for more information, please contact Assistant Library Director Kim Shipala at kshipala@minlib.net . To register, please visit  https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEscuqupjgoGd0XAfQuUAIIChGwkzL...  .

PMC Kids Ride goes Virtual - Sep 19-20

PMC Franklin Kids Ride 2020 is re-imagined !

Cancer isn't taking the year off so neither is the the PMC Franklin Kids Ride. This year's ride will be a VIRTUAL ride on the weekend of September 19-20. Kids can ride as much or as little as they want in their own neighborhood, on a bike path or anywhere they choose! It's a great opportunity for them to be creative, have some fun, make it their own, and raise money to help find a cure for cancer.

Get family, friends, and neighbors to register too. All local communities are encouraged to participate. There is no registration fee and no fundraising minimum and all money raised will go directly to support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund.

These donations benefit research, treatment, and care for children and families impacted by cancer. Since 2006, PMC Franklin Kids ride has raised over $540,000 for the Jimmy fund and we look forward to adding to the total this year. Sign up today to be a virtual rider and/or donate at:https://kids.pmc.org/franklin

For more information, please contact Lisa Marchioni at lisabxyz@verizon.net

Many kids. One mission. Cure cancer.

Zentangle
Wednesdays, August 14 & 28, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Zentangle 101, Wednesday, August 14, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
The Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. We call these patterns, tangles. You create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves and orbs. These simple shapes are the "Elemental Strokes" in all Zentangle art. These patterns are drawn on small pieces of paper called "tiles." We call them tiles because you can assemble them into mosaics.
Zentangle art is non-representational and unplanned so you can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result. You don't need to know what a tangle is going to look like to draw it. You just need to know the steps. The result is a delightful surprise.
Zentangle 102, Wednesday, August 28, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
In Zentangle 102 we will continue to create beautiful images building on what we have learned in our previous Zentangle class. As we learn new tangles, we will put them together in creative ways to either create our own mosaic consisting of multiple tiles put together to make a whole or work on a larger surface. We will also discuss enjoyable ways to continue practicing our Zentangle journey on our own.
