"Franklin Panthers Won't Be Stopped: Cheer Wins Hockomock League Championship"

"Cheerleading competitions: massive gatherings of teams from all over, with crowds of parents and supporters packed into stands to watch the cheerleader’s routines. Of course, because of coronavirus restrictions, cheer competitions looked a lot different this year.

Although the cheer team typically competes in the Fall and Winter seasons, the MIAA changed the timeframe to be Fall II and Spring. In a regular season, the FHS team would compete in several invitational competitions before heading to Hockomocks (then, if all goes well, Regionals and States). This season, there was only one competition: Hockomocks.

After being denied a chance to compete for the Division I state championship when COVID struck last March, many members of the team were crushed, but they were eager to get back on the mat and prove themselves."

Pantherbook: Nation Honor Society holds food drive

"From April 5th to May 1st, the National Honors Society advisors and members have organized a food drive to support the Franklin Food Pantry.

Students can support the drive by leaving donations in buckets available at the Town Hall, FHS Lobby, or police station.

If you would rather donations be picked up at your house, fill out this google form  to arrange for a volunteer to pick up supplies from your house."

Pantherbook: Student profiles - Ndoye, Rudolph

 

"In 2018, Ndoumbe Ndoye and several other students created the Diversity Awareness Club to address the negative experiences they had as students of color in Franklin.

Since then, the club has become a prominent one at FHS, meeting on Tuesdays from 3-4 and welcoming all students to become educated on racial issues in the community.

When asked why she felt the need to start the club, Ndoumbe explained, “I experienced many microaggressions and implicit biases growing up, to the point I was never comfortable in my skin and had such low esteem. When the club had started, I could not bare seeing others feel that way about themselves like I did.”

"Kate Rudolph, a junior gymnast at Franklin High School, was recently named a Hockomock League All-Star for a second consecutive year. This season, Kate earned top scores of 9.1 on bars, 9.4 on vault, 9.4 on floor, and 9.6 on beam, giving her a high All-Around score of 37.2. One could say she is a huge asset to the high school’s gymnastics team, helping them achieve a 9-0 winning record this year.

Kate began participating in gymnastics when she was just 18 months old after her older sister’s gym opened a Mommy & Me class.  Once she started, she reflects, “I never went back [to my life before gymnastics].”

Pantherbook: "Safety In School" and "Everything You Need to Know"

Via Pantherbook, two articles on the return of students to FHS for in person learning as of April 12, 2021

"You may not notice many differences when you arrive at school on April 12, except for one particular detail – everyone is closer.  Seeing as there will be more students in the building, people will be able to stay three feet apart instead of six feet apart. The school is also exploring making use of alternate areas for classrooms such as lecture halls and the library. 

The only area where the six feet of separation will remain is in the cafeteria. Students are eating and not wearing masks, which poses a greater risk to safety. However, because there are more students in the building, the school must explore alternative seating options. Mr. Hanna mentioned the introduction of outdoor eating, just in time for the warmer weather. To begin, tents will most likely be placed in the courtyard for students to lunch under; the gym will also be utilized. Later in the year, there may be a half-day model of school where students leave before eating lunch. Alternatively, although this is an unlikely option, students may eat outside with personal picnic blankets."

As April 12 draws closer, students are preparing for their return to school at almost full capacity for the first time in more than a year. Covid-19 has made it difficult for teenagers to have a “regular” high school experience, and getting the majority of students back into the building will no doubt nurture normal routines once more.

There is something to be said about rising safety concerns, however. With the emergence of a new 3-feet distance rule, pool testing, and stricter health protocols, day-to-day school life will look much different from the smaller cohorts from the beginning of the year. While in-person classrooms are not yet filled, these new guidelines are a quite important step on the journey towards a Covid-free education experience.

Pantherbook: Girl Up club leads “A Discussion on Gender Equality" ; FHS switches to 'in person' learning Apr 12

"On Thursday, March 25, students met through the Girl Up club for “A Discussion on Gender Equality.” The meeting was led by Girl Up Teen Advisor Angelina Perez.

The meeting drew local participants as well as Girl Up members from LA, the British Virgin Islands, Syracuse, and Washington D.C.

The discussion started with the simple question, “How have you been impacted by sexism or misogyny?”

April 12th is the finalized date for when Franklin High will be having nearly eighty percent of their students back in school. The CDC recently approved that it is safe for students to now be three feet apart in classrooms.

When talking to Mr. Hanna he explains how there are many different safety measures put in at FHS for not only the students, but the staff as well. There will be a maximum of twenty four desks per classroom all measured to be at least 3 feet apart, there will also always be six feet between a teacher and a student.

"Diversity– “The practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc” is what comes up when searched on google. But what does this really mean?

To myself and many others, diversity is being inclusive to all and not just the ones we look like; it is standing up for someone even if you don’t know them. It is being a kind human- when you see people being judged based on the color of their skin and you stand up for them. We all deserve equal kindness and respect.

Pantherbook: Mock Trial Team advances to Sweet 16

"Congrats to the Mock Trial team for their victory over a brilliant Wayland team yesterday, 105-104. Both schools' coaches called it the most epic battle either had ever seen. With the win, Franklin advanced to the statewide Sweet 16 of the Mock Trial Tournament's "March Madness."

"The following Mock Trial students earned exemplary scores yesterday: Nipun Goel, Akash Shetty, Pratusha Nouduri, Erin McCaffrey, Nihara Lijan, Paris Arffa, Charlene Peng, and Matthew Parrella."

Pantherbook: "COVID-19’s Impact on FHS Faculty"

 

"COVID-19 has brought many schools new challenges and experiences which they have not faced before. Franklin High School principal, Joshua Hanna, says he is impressed with the students, parents, and facility’s hard work and positive attitude which he believes will allow us to get back to an in-person learning model.

Challenges

When asked what major impact did Covid-19 have on FHS staff, Mr. Hanna responded, “becoming crisis responsive regarding new regulations that have never been implemented before.” Schools were shut down almost a year ago and since then, a myriad of new regulations and safety precautions have been issued. As a result, teachers had to get quickly accustomed to educating students in socially distant classrooms or virtual google meets."

"On February 22nd, student athletes will be returning to their cheer, football, volleyball, and winter track seasons after a long wait.

However, MIAA guidelines will be different this season in order to remain safe and socially-distanced.

Indoor facilities such as gyms will only be operating at 40% capacity following the Massachusetts Phase 3, Step 1 guidelines, and spectators at games will be limited to low numbers."

Pantherbook: "The Reality of Online Learning: Students Perspective"

Tess Bower shares the results of her research into online Learning and its impact on Franklin students on Pantherbook.

"The swarm of kids rushing into school in the morning, the cool seats on the noisy bus, the crowded cafeteria and chattering media center. All sights students have not seen this year. With Hybrid Learning at FHS, some of these norms have taken new shape. The once loud, crowded cafeteria now has students quietly chatting amongst themselves while sitting six feet apart. The swarm of kids rushing into school is now only 1/3rd of the student body, socially distancing themselves while they walk in. Busses are disturbingly quiet and empty, and the media center has signs reading, “Closed before and after school”. To say our beloved FHS has an entirely new atmosphere, would be an understatement. These new norms have been put in place and everyone is continuing to adjust to them. "

Coronavirus Vaccine Distribution at FHS

"On Wednesday, January 13, Coronavirus vaccinations were officially administered at Franklin High School. The vaccines, the first of a two-session dosage, were given primarily to frontline medical workers – included were various EMTs, nurses, and other healthcare personnel.

The gym, being the largest space in the school, was utilized to maintain social distancing guidelines while vaccinations were being distributed. Miniature “booths” were set at least six feet apart from one another, with plexiglass shields in front of patients and supervisors at all times. A temperature check was required before entry to the building, along with mandatory mask usage to ensure protection for those who came."

According to NPR, nearly 1 in 4 households have experienced food insecurity this year, which can be described as the lack of constant access to sufficient amounts of food needed to live a healthy life. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, 10.5% of all American households (13.7 million) experienced food insecurity at some point in 2019. Comedy with Murder? Who would have thought the two could go together?

What is Clue(the play) about?

Clue is based on the iconic 1985 movie inspired by the Hasbro Board Game. The plot has to do with a mysterious invitation from an anonymous host at a mansion where six strange guests assemble for an unusual dinner party where murder and blackmail are on the menu. The murder is solved by a detective, while the actual ending differs between productions. The play has three different endings.

When is the play?
The play is occurring on December 3rd and 4th at 7pm.

"Up until November 16th, FHS students hadn’t been inside the school in 248 days. A place where such kids would typically spend about seven hours five days a week had been shut down, with nobody having a clue about when it would re-open.

Although there is still no definite answer as to what the future looks like, students in Cohort C attended in-person learning at the high school this past week (excluding remote Wednesday). Let’s take a look at the things they enjoyed, the things they didn’t, and how in-person learning compares to the past two months of remote learning.

Ashley Currivan, a freshman this year and alum of Horace Mann Middle School, comments, “At school, I enjoy seeing people and getting to still go to and switch classes throughout the day. I think [the members of the FHS staff] are handling it very well and I really enjoyed it so far!”

From Pantherbook we share the following: 

"The CDC advises that “the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with.” To still feel connected to your extended family, you can video chat with them on Thanksgiving.

However, if you are visiting family, a safer way to celebrate is outside, perhaps at a bonfire. If you are gathering inside, you can open windows in the house to establish more air-flow. Inside or outside, the CDC highly recommends wearing masks when not eating or drinking, social distance as much as possible, and washing your hands often."
