Quick survey results: Wednesday evening better than Saturday morning

Thanks for the participating in the quick survey on when to best schedule a meeting so that you attend.

Half the responses indicate a weekday night with Saturday morning running second and Saturday afternoon the least optimal.

Quick survey results: Wednesday evening better than Saturday morning
Quick survey results: Wednesday evening better than Saturday morning

Of the weekday evenings, Wednesday is the most popular followed by Monday and then Tuesday. I would further qualify the nights as Wednesday (not a Town Council meeting night) as well as Tuesday (not a School Committee night) to be the best options.

In the News: Primary results

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"In a political stunner, incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano lost Tuesday’s primary to Ayanna Pressley, a Boston city councilor who is virtually assured of becoming the first black woman to serve Massachusetts in Congress.
Republican Gov. Charlie Baker won his party’s nomination for a second term, defeating Scott Lively, a conservative minister and staunch supporter of President Donald Trump who frequently called Baker — a frequent critic of the president — a RINO, or Republican in Name Only. Baker will face Democrat Jay Gonzalez.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren sailed through the primary unopposed. She’ll face Geoff Diehl, a state representative who served as co-chair of Trump’s 2016 campaign in the state and defeated two other Republicans for his party’s nomination."

"Three Democrats battled it out in Tuesday’s Democratic Primary in the Norfolk, Bristol and Middlesex District.
Early returns showed Needham lawyer Becca Rausch had a 2,900-vote lead over challengers Jackie Katz and Kris Alexsov, according to the Rausch campaign late Tuesday night. All precincts reported except for Norfolk and Franklin.
The winner faces incumbent Sen. Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, in November. Ross has held the seat since 2010."

2017 Official - Franklin Biennial Town Election Results

There is one correction that I could find to the election results shared for November 7. In the School Committee results, Precinct 6 for Cynthia Douglas changed  from 286 to 251 and overall from 2235 to 2200. That change in 35 votes cascaded through the totals for School Committee but there was no other impact.

The Official results can be found here

Reminder: get the MIAA app for all the FHS sports schedules and results

If you want to follow any of the FHS Panthers sports teams, you can download the MIAA app to your smart phone and get the season schedule.

I had heard of the app from the Facebook posting by the FHS boys basketball team last year.

It does install quickly from the Google Play Store
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.miaa.droid&hl=en

in the Google Playstore

It is also available for iTunes

It prompts you to select a favorite school (FHS was my choice!)

Percent Franklin Voter Turnout 2003 - 2016 (updated with official results from Nov 8, 2016)

The "official" results from the November 8th were posted to the Town of Franklin webpage and as I updated my chart with the final numbers, I also realized that i had left out a key election in the last chart. I'll attribute that to a version control issue, I had updated an earlier version rather than the proper version.

Here is the most recent chart with the percent Franklin voter turnout for elections from 2003 - 2016.

Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School Students in All Grades Outpace State in PARCC Test Performance

Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School students (BFCCPS) outperformed state averages on all tests across all grade levels on the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) tests taken last spring.
Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School
Across all grade levels tested, students at BFCCPS averaged an 81 percent proficiency rate on PARCC English language arts (ELA) exams and 70 percent in math, compared to average statewide proficiency rates of 46 percent and 45 percent, respectively.
"We are proud of our students and teachers, who put in a lot of hard work to make this incredible achievement possible," said Heather Zolnowski the Head of School at BFCCPS. "Our community is built on a strong partnership between parents, students, our faculty and administration, and the extraordinary results seen across the board on the PARCC exam is a testament to our success."BFCCPS is among approximately 300 school districts across Massachusetts that opted to administer the PARCC test in the spring of 2015 under a two-year state pilot.
The gaps between BFCCPS PARCC scores and statewide averages are dramatic. On the English language arts test, 90 percent of BFCCPS 6th graders scored proficient or better compared to the state average of 60 percent. For the same class, 78 percent scored proficient or above for math, compared to the state average of 53 percent for 6th graders.
Similarly, 76 and 86 percent of BFCCPS 3rd and 8th graders, respectively, earned proficient scores in English, as compared to 54 and 64 percent of 3rd and 8th graders statewide who took PARCC. In math, 84 percent of 3rd graders and 74 percent of 5th graders at the regional public charter school received scores of proficient and above, while averages were 55 percent for both 3rd and 5th grades across the state.
BFCCPS' high PARCC scores across the board demonstrate that its students are progressing well through each grade level and on track to be well prepared for high school and beyond.
Enrollment Applications for this regional public charter school for students in Grades Kindergarten through Eight for the 2016-2017 school year are now live. BFCCPS will host the first of six information sessions where applicants can learn more about the school this Saturday, November 14th from 10 am to noon. Learn more and apply online at http://bfccps.org/about/enrollment/

Franklin voters turn out for the money, will they turn out on Tuesday?

When the Presidential elections roll around, and all the political campaign ads fill the spaces on TV and radio, Franklin voters turn out big time (80+ %).

When there is a MA State election, campaign dollars also drive the voters to the polls (60+ %) to elect our Governor and other state positions.

When there is an override election, or debt override to build a school, this affects the Franklin pocketbook and voters turn out (40+ %). Franklin voters will generally build a school and only once in at least 7 tries have they ever passed an operational override (2007).

When there is a vote for the Town Council, School Committee, Town Clerk, and all the other important positions that run the community, only some Franklin voters come out to the polls (12-22%).

Maybe this time, with contested elections for Town Council, School Committee, Town Clerk and Board of Health, Franklin voters will show appropriate interest.

Will you be voting on Tuesday?

Will you be one of the 12,418?

Looking back through the election results voter turnout varies. One could argue that the amount of money spent on advertising in the election drives the voter turnout. One could also argue that the amount of direct control Franklin voters have over the election runs in an inverse proportion to the turnout.

Hence the presidential election campaigns will get about an 80% voter turnout and the state elections will generate about 60%.

When the stakes are purely Franklin and the question is regarding money(i.e. an override) Franklin voters will generally turnout at about 40%. For a local election to select our Town Council, School Committee and other elected officials, the voters turnout at about 20%.

With 20,697 voters registered in Franklin as of Oct 23, 2014, and the election on Nov 4th classified as a State election, approx 12,418 voters would turnout. The 12,418 is calculated at 60% of the registered total (20,697).

So will you be one of the 12,418?

Note: the polls open at 6:00 AM and close promptly at 8:00 PM.
All Franklin precincts vote in the same place - the high school.
