Volunteers wanted! Please join the Franklin Rotary Club as we partner with the Franklin Food Pantry on a community service project to supply cleaning supplies to members of our community who are in need.

One of the biggest needs for families that the Food Pantry serves is access to cleaning supplies, as food stamps do not cover the costs of these items. The Franklin Rotary Club needs help assembling buckets of cleaning supplies the Food Pantry can distribute to families to take home with them.

Here's how you can participate:

• Volunteers arrive at the Franklin Food Pantry, 43 West Central Street, at 5:00 PM
• Following the project, please join us at Incontro Restaurant at 860 West Central Street for pizza and beverages

Rotary Club to recognize John Padula

This Thursday evening at a substantially sold out gathering at Incontro Restaurant, the Franklin Rotary Club will honor John Padula, a member who, in his 50+ years in the club, has run activities (mainly the Home and Trade Show that filled the then new Fieldhouse) that raised more money for community projects than maybe all other Rotary activities combined, and has run the longest running service project, the Franklin Seniors Pasta Supper now in its 27th year. 

John, shown in Jimmy Durante garb signing songs at the Pasta Supper, will receive honors from the Rotary Club, the Town, and the State of Massachusetts in appreciation of his public spirit.

Our initial run at a Car Show last fall was so successful - nearly 60 cars showed up last September!- that the Franklin Rotary is having another car show this fall. Cars are entered by their owners, and are judged in several categories. Entrance fees are paid by car owners, but all public is admitted free! 

"Electric Cars" are a new category this year, reflecting the radical change occurring the auto industry. An experienced DJ will emcee the show and usually brings a big following of experienced devotees that can share all kinds of interesting facts about your favorite old cars. Freshly prepared food is available in the Dean College Student Center.

The show is Sunday, September 16, 2018, 11 AM to 3 PM (or as needed to complete judging), at the Dean College main parking lot in downtown Franklin, on Route 140 just west of the intersection with Emmons St (traffic light).

Parking is available adjacent in Rockland Trust Bank lot 1/2 block east on Rt.140 or by the elementary school just west of the show on Union or School Streets.

Attention high school seniors: Rotary Club Grant Application due May 31, 2018

As your high school experience is coming to a close, it is time to contemplate, plan and make decisions that will affect your future. Part of that process is determining how to pay for education. The cost of furthering your education is high but the failure to obtain additional knowledge will cost you even more. Our members understand this and recognize the significant expense and sacrifice that often accompanies its pursuit. With this in mind, the Rotary Club of Franklin, as it has for many years, continues to offer graduating high school seniors from Bellingham, Franklin, King Phillip, Medway and Tri-County High Schools an opportunity to receive a grant towards the expense of higher education.

The Rotary Club is an international service organization that is dedicated to world peace through service to others and an increased awareness of people’s needs though education. Based on this premise, each application for the Franklin Rotary Club Grant is evaluated on their community involvement, financial need, and academic achievement. This is a grant that is being offered to help defray college expenses in your second semester of your freshman year. The committee will let you know if you have been selected for a scholarship before you leave for college, but to actually receive your check, you will need to send in your first semester’s transcript.

Franklin Rotary: Calling all current high school sophomores

It's that time of year again and The Rotary Club of Franklin is interested in community leadership, not only for today but for tomorrow as well. The students in your school will, in a very few years, be assuming some of our community's leadership roles. We know you are training them for the task. Rotary would like to help.

For this reason, Rotary District 7910 will conduct the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Conference at Fitchburg State University on June 22-24, 2018. The program will be staffed by carefully selected counselors and Rotary leaders.

Our objective is to offer outstanding high school sophomores an opportunity to live, work and interact together in an atmosphere of friendly competition. Also, we provide them with a program designed to challenge them to utilize and improve their skills and accept the responsibilities of leadership. Much of the students' time will be structured with programs including interactive Leadership Labs, exciting guest speakers, and challenging mental and physical activities that will provide them with a chance to excel among and with their peers. The greatest benefit may come from sharing this experience with the more than 150 other outstanding young men and women selected from schools and organizations through Rotary District 7910 in Central Massachusetts.

Our Rotary Club is asking you to spread the word to your young men and women who will benefit most from this experience. They will be selected by the Franklin Rotary first for leadership potential, second for good citizenship, third for their desire to attend the Conference and fourth for scholarship. These characteristics are listed in that order so that latent leaders are not overlooked because of grades. They are extremely important to keep in mind to ensure the success of the student's experience and the entire program.

The only requirement is that in order to be nominated, the individual must be a student who is currently a Sophomore in high school.

Our club's RYLA Selection Committee will then conduct interviews and select the students we will sponsor for RYLA. Franklin Rotary Club invites seniors to Valentine's Breakfast - Feb 10

The Franklin Rotary Club invites the senior community to join us at 9:00 AM on Saturday, February 10 for a Valentine's Breakfast at the Franklin Housing Authority. Featuring a warm breakfast, hot coffee, fruit, music and some special Valentine's Day surprises.

Norfolk County Register of Deeds O’Donnell to speak at Franklin Rotary Club - February 1

Norfolk County Register of Deeds William P. O’Donnell will be the guest speaker at the Franklin Rotary Club meeting on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 6:00 PM. The meeting will be held at 3 Restaurant, 461 W. Central Street in Franklin.

The Register will discuss the historical nature of the Registry and his ongoing efforts to modernize and computerize the vast number of Norfolk County real estate records. He will also address the Massachusetts Homestead Act and following the presentation address any specific questions members may have.

Franklin Rotary Car Show a Roaring Success

Thanks to the drawing power of DJ Carshow, 60 cars showed up for Franklin Rotary Club's first Car Show at Dean College in Franklin, almost twice the number anticipated!

We were also lucky to get BMW to display their supercar at the show! 

The show was sponsored with the support of Dean College and the Rotaract Club at Dean College.

Sign up for the 2nd Annual Chalkfest for Charity - Oct 22

Wrentham Village Premium Outlets will be hosting their second annual Chalkfest for Charity on Sunday, October 22 (rain date of Sunday October 29) from 11 am - 3 pm. 

This event is being held in partnership with the Franklin Rotary Club, who will use the proceeds raised at this event to help the Franklin Rotary, associated charities, and projects throughout the year, such as:

• Sending students to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary Clubs around the globe. Each year, thousands of young people participate in this program. Young people ages 13–30 are sponsored by Rotary Clubs to attend the event run by the club's district committee)
• Grants to High School Seniors
• Community outreach

What is the Chalkfest for Charity?

It is the coming together of art, charity and community! Local artists will be creating masterpieces on the sidewalks of Wrentham Village Premium Outlets, which will be sponsored by local businesses, organizations or individuals. 

All of the proceeds raised at this event will be donated to the Franklin Rotary Club. Artists will start their artwork at 11:00 am on the day of the event, and the official judging will begin at 2:00 pm – but watching the artists at work is half of the fun! 

The artwork will then be on display at the Wrentham Village Premium Outlets as long as mother nature allows.


How is money raised?

Local businesses and generous individuals buy "squares." Each square is assigned to an artist. The sponsor's names appear at the top of each artist’s drawing.

One of Rotary's most noted programs is Polio Plus, which has virtually eliminated polio from the earth through a massive vaccination program that only an organization as big as Rotary International could undertake successfully.

Franklin Rotary Club has chartered a Rotaract Club at Dean College. The 19 charter members, all Dean students, attended last Thursday's Rotary Club meeting where they were formally inducted into Rotaract by Rotary District Governor Steve Sager from the Westboro Rotary Club, Franklin Rotary President Theodore Katsaros, and Carlos Aguilera, Franklin Rotarian and the Rotaract Club Advisor. 

It is very difficult to establish a Rotaract Club, due to the need for several factors to come together at the same time. The students already have a list of projects they intend to do to help out in the Franklin community.

Franklin Rotary sidewalk chalkfest challenge a success

Wrentham Factory Outlet customers were treated to a display of talented chalk artists as they shopped last Saturday. 

The show was sponsored by the Franklin Rotary Club and Simon Properties, owners of the Wrentham Outlet, with cash and trophies awarded to the winners in the adult and children's categories. 

Overall winner was Kerry St.Pierre who won both the judges' award and the people's award divisions. Other adult cash prizes went to Lee Ball (2nd) and Sarah Anzalone (3rd). 

This was the first time this was done at the Wrentham Outlets and should become even more impressive next year--Cambridge and Providence Rotary Clubs have excellent shows at their local Simon Properties

Sidewalk Chalkfest - Wrentham Village - Oct 15th

Franklin Rotary Club, in conjunction with Simon Properties, is holding a sidewalk artists Chalkfest at Wrentham Outlets on Saturday October 15th. There will be cash rewards presented courtesy of the mall to Adult/Professional artists, as well as several age groups for children. 

Adults are assigned a 8x8 ft panel of sidewalk and kids are given a 3x3 ft panel. There are plans for a storefront area for professional enrollees to display their art for sale. 

Sponsorships are $250 for adults (see rules on application forms) and $50 for children. If artists cannot get their own sponsor, the Rotary Club can match sponsors as needed.

Rotary International

This is the first time that a Chalkfest has been done at Wrentham Outlets, but the Rotary Clubs of Providence and Cambridge have been doing Chalkfests successfully for several years (some of their artists might even be at the Wrentham show to help - and to participate!)

Rotary Youth Leadership recognition for high school sophomores

One of the greatest activities of Rotary District 7910 is Rotary Youth Leadership which is a weekend at a local college campus for High School sophomore students that have demonstrated leadership potential and wish specialized experiences in team building to achieve assigned functions (one of the perennial favorite projects is building a functional bridge out of nothing but newspaper pages) as a team of individuals who have never worked together--or even met before. 

This year Franklin Rotary was proud of the six students (double our usual attendees). The students were then invited to a Rotary meeting on a Thursday evening at 6 o'clock at 3's Restaurant for dinner and to speak about their experiences. The optimism in their presentations confirmed that we had sent excellent candidates!
