There is a light at the end of the town’s summer-long water treatment plant repair tunnel that has kept the town on a full water ban since July.
Department of Public Works Director Brutus Cantoreggi said Wednesday via the department’s social media that the town has all the parts needed to get its main water treatment plant up and running.
The plant at 10 Public Works Way was shut down on July 7, along with the town’s two largest and oldest wells associated with it, as a result of a fire in one of the tanks.
“We finally have all the parts needed to fully restore the water treatment plant after the fire,” Cantoreggi reported. “Our crews are currently working to install the parts and we hope to have everything ready very soon.”

"A nonprofit organization hopes to equip 100 teen girls from low- to moderate-income families with the skills needed to launch a business, nonprofit or community project.
Girls with Impact, a group that aims to supply next-generation leaders with a strong network for both the corporate and public sectors, announced recently that it will give 100 girls scholarships to an online academy where they can learn how to build a business or nonprofit.
The deadline to apply is Monday. Applications can be submitted online at girlswithimpact.com. Scholarships are made possible by support of Eversource Energy and Boston Scientific, according to a press release.
The live, online program is designed with Harvard University experts. It guides girls through ideation to a plausible business plan. Along the way, the girls learn about concepts such as competition, targeting customers, finances and marketing."

Franklin VFW Post 3402 - high school and middle school essay contest announced
The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $30,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.
Patriot's Pen: The 2019-20 theme is: What Makes America Great
Each year more than 132,000 students in grades 6-8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $55,000, with each first-place state winner receiving a minimum of $500 at the national level.
The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Want to apply? Read the rules and eligibility requirements, then download and complete the 2019-20 entry form. All student entries must be submitted to a sponsoring local VFW Post by midnight, Oct. 31, 2019.

“She always believed in an arts education”
"Dozens of his late wife’s paintings crowd the pale yellow walls of Robert Seide’s home.
“We’d be driving somewhere, and she’d say, ‘Pull over!’” Seide recalled, of his wife’s eye for art-worthy scenery. ”‘I want to take a photo to paint later.’”
The canvases, covered in flowers, landscapes and geometric patterns, are packed end to end with color. One, painted after the shattering 2017 diagnosis of late-stage pancreatic cancer, shows a dark, swirling scene beneath the cheerful flowers she painted over afterward.
“She loved infusing art into every aspect of her life,” daughter Laura Seide Bishop said. “She always had an eye for color and design, even when she wasn’t painting.”Continue reading the article online (subscription may be required)

Tri-County Regional Student Awarded Full Scholarship to Dean College
Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School is proud to announce Julia Farrell, a senior in the Culinary Arts career program from Medfield, has been awarded a $34,000 tuition scholarship to Dean College for the 2019-2020 academic year. The scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years/8 semesters of attendance at Dean College, providing maintaining at least a 2.7 grade point average. This is the twenty-first year that Dean College is awarding the scholarship to a Tri-County student.
Consideration for the scholarship is based on a completed admissions application, a Tri-County senior in good standing, superior academic record, teacher recommendations, interviews with a Dean College Admissions representative and Tri-County School Counselors, and extra-curricular activities including employment. Julia was awarded the scholarship based upon her professionalism and poise along with many of her accolades. Julia has been a member of the cheerleading squad throughout her time at Tri-County. She is employed part-time as a hostess and waitress at Nosh & Grog located in Medfield. Julia plans to pursue a degree from Dean College in Early Childhood Education.
Julia was well prepared for the interview process. Tri-County students are groomed to present themselves in a professional manner. They are taught to research an organization so they are ready to answer any questions posed to them prior to going to an interview.
“Julia Farrell was chosen as the winner of the Tri-County Regional Scholarship because of her wonderful grade point average, her stellar recommendations, and outstanding employment endorsements,” said Larry Thode, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions at Dean College. “She is a great representative of Tri-County and we’re delighted to have her become a member of the Dean College student body.”
Though the scholarship has typically been announced at graduation exercises in the past, this year it has been announced earlier in order to meet the College’s acceptance fall enrollment schedule.
“Once again we are grateful of the generosity that Dean College has granted to one of our students and are proud of such a rewarding partnership that impacts our community," said Stephen Dockray, Superintendent. “The scholarship program permits another Tri-County student to pursue a college education. Congratulations to Julia from all of us at Tri-County.”
In addition to Tri-County, the College also awards a scholarship to a student who is a Franklin resident at Franklin High School, and to a student who is a member of the Hockomock Area YMCA.
Dean College awards more than $20 million in scholarships and grants annually to assist students in funding their educations. An astonishing 90 percent of Dean students receive some form of merit-based aid with an average award amount of $19,000 per year. Dean College believes in making a private college education as affordable as possible, therefore most awards are renewable yearly provided the student maintains satisfactory academic progress towards a degree.

64 Tri-County Students Receive John and Abigail Adams Scholarship
Sixty-four seniors at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School qualified to receive the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship for their performance on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test.
The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education at a Massachusetts state college or university.
The students were recognized on Monday, January 7, during a celebratory reception in the school’s library.

The scholarship provides up to eight semesters of free tuition to full-time undergraduate students who attend a Massachusetts state college or university. The scholarship covers tuition only; fees and room and board are not included. The scholarship must be used within six years of a student's high school graduation.
To be eligible, students in the Class of 2019 had to achieve an Advanced score on one of the three high school state assessment tests in ELA, Mathematics or STE, and score at the Proficient level or higher on the two remaining tests. Their combined scores must also place them among the top 25-percent of students in the graduating class within their district.

Franklin Youth Baseball awards four scholarships
Franklin Youth Baseball was honored to present this year’s scholarships to four outstanding young men. Three FYBO scholarships ($750 each) were given to Joseph Clark, Tyler Langevin, and Jason Collins. The Bill Capen Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) was awarded to Brendan Ryan.

"Direct Federal Credit Union is offering a $3,000 scholarship for a 2018 graduate of Franklin High School, with an application deadline of April 30.

Tri-County Regional Student Awarded Full Scholarship to Dean College
Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School is proud to announce Jayme Martello, a senior in the cosmetology program from Franklin, has been awarded a $33,000 tuition scholarship to Dean College for the 2018-2019 academic year. The scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years/8 semesters of attendance at Dean College, providing maintaining at least a 2.7 grade point average. This is the twentieth year that Dean College is awarding the scholarship to a Tri-County Regional student.
Consideration for the scholarship is based on a completed admissions application, a Tri-County senior in good standing, superior academic record, teacher recommendations, interviews with a Dean College admissions representative and Tri-County School Counselors, and extra-curricular activities including employment. Jayme was awarded the scholarship based upon many of her accolades. Jayme is employed part-time at Texture Salon in Medfield where she is a cosmetology assistant and receptionist, and she also works part-time at the Outpost Farm in Holliston. Jayme is very driven and has maintained a 3.95 GPA. Jayme plans to pursue a degree from Dean College in Business Management.
“Jayme Martello has maintained a remarkable record at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School, said Larry Thode, Senior Assistant Director of Admissions at Dean College. “She has earned a 3.95 GPA while working two part-time jobs and had superior teacher recommendations. Dean College is looking forward to her being a part of the College community in September of 2018.”
Though the scholarship has typically been announced at graduation exercises in the past, this year it has been announced earlier in order to meet the College’s acceptance fall enrollment schedule.
“We are honored that Dean College has provided this amazing opportunity to one of our students, and are proud to be involved in a rewarding partnership that continues to positively impact our community," said Stephen Dockray, Superintendent. “The scholarship program enables another Tri-County student to pursue a college education. Congratulations to Jayme from all of us at Tri-County.”
In addition to Tri-County, the College also awards a scholarship to a student who is a Franklin resident at Franklin High School, and to a student who is a member of the Hockomock Area YMCA.
Dean College awards more than $20 million in scholarships and grants annually to assist students in funding their educations. An astonishing 90 percent of Dean students receive some form of merit-based aid with an average award amount of $19,000 per year. Dean College believes in making a private college education as affordable as possible, therefore most awards are renewable yearly provided the student maintains satisfactory academic progress towards a degree.

53 Tri-County Students Receive Adams Scholarship
Fifty-three seniors at Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School qualified to receive the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship for their performance on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System test.
The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education at a Massachusetts state college or university.
The students were recognized on Thursday, March 15, during a celebratory reception in the school’s library.
Recipients from the Class of 2018 are:
The scholarship provides up to eight semesters of free tuition to full-time undergraduate students who attend a Massachusetts state college or university. The scholarship covers tuition only; fees and room and board are not included. The scholarship must be used within six years of a student's high school graduation.
To be eligible, students in the Class of 2018 had to achieve an Advanced score on one of the three high school state assessment tests in ELA, Mathematics or STE, and score at the Proficient level or higher on the two remaining tests. Their combined scores must also place them among the top 25-percent of students in the graduating class within their district.
The John and Abigail Adams Scholarship provides a tuition waiver for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education at a Massachusetts state college or university.

"Non-traditional aged students from Massachusetts or Northern Rhode Island in need of additional coursework or certifications may be eligible for a scholarship ranging from $250-1,500. Now in its 31st year, The Women’s Success Network is now accepting applications for its 2018 Founders Scholarship.
In conjunction with the general WSN Founders Scholarship, Fisher College and Dean College will also sponsor specific awards for non-traditional student applicants. Applications for scholarship consideration will be accepted through March 15. Typically, four to six scholarships are awarded, with proceeds from ongoing WSN fundraising.
Information and applications are available at http://wsninc.org. Applications will be reviewed and interviews will take place in April. Selected applicants will be notified in May. The 2018 Scholarships are awarded at the WSN dinner meeting held on Wednesday, June 6."

Tri-County Student Named A Commended Student In The 2018 National Merit® Scholarship Program
Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School announced today that Armen Eghian of Seekonk, has been named a Commended Student in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal, Michael Procaccini, to this scholastically talented senior.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).
“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

"Junior Michael Doherty’s death this summer devastated members of his fraternity Alpha Tau Omega, but they’re finding solace in raising money for an endowment fund to honor their dear friend.
Doherty, a student in the Pratt School of Engineering, passed away in May near his home in Franklin, Mass. Shortly afterwards, members of ATO began the Michael Doherty Memorial Endowment Fund to honor his legacy at Duke by creating a permanent, annual scholarship for an undergraduate engineering student. The fund has currently raised almost $110,000, surpassing the original goal of $100,000.
“Mike was the best of us, we all loved him so much,” said senior John Clarke, president of ATO. “We tried to think of what the best way to commemorate him would be and decided it would be to continuously give to students who embody the same characteristics Mike did."
