Hockomock League Softball: FHS Player to Watch for 2021 = Colace

HockomockSports.com has published the softball players to watch for the Hockomock League for the Spring 2021 season. The FHS student athlete is shared here. The link to the complete league softball listing is provided below.

Gabby Colace, Senior – Franklin

Colace is one of only two players remaining from the 2019 team that nearly snagged the Kelley-Rex title, finishing one game behind Taunton. A strong defensive second baseman, Colace is also a spark plug at the top of the lineup for the Panthers, able to work counts, get on base, and then put pressure on the defense with her speed on the basepaths. The Johnson & Wales University-commit has the eye-hand coordination and reflexes you’d expect from a goaltender and she puts them to good use on the softball field as well. Her experience will be a necessity for Franklin to make another push up the league standings.

HockomockSports.com: 2021 Hockomock League Softball Preview

HockomockSports.com has published the softball previews for the Hockomock League for the Spring 2021 season. The FHS preview is shared here. The link to the complete league listing is provided below.

FRANKLIN
2019 Record: 16-7
2019 Finish: Reached Div. 1 South Quarterfinal
Coach: Katie Holbrook

After coming within a game of sharing the league title with Taunton in 2019 (and within one run of facing the Tigers in the South semifinal), Franklin returns only two players and has a new coaching staff with Katie Holbrook taking over this season. Despite all the new faces, the Panthers expect to be in the mix for the league title again this year.

Senior Gabby Colace is the lone player on the roster with significant varsity experience and she will be counted on to be a run producer. Fellow senior Molly Collins will join Colace in the middle infield positions and the Panthers have players who are versatile to play multiple positions. Franklin has a potentially strong lineup with Libby Carter, Georgia Harvey, and Lauren Cote all capable of coming up with big hits and driving in a lot of runs. Juniors Julia White and Aislinn Lavery, and senior Jenny Maciel give Franklin good pitching depth and will try to keep the opposition off-balance and allow the defense to make plays behind them. Sophomore Hailey Fales will get the call behind the plate.

“They have already shown in just one scrimmage and a couple of practices great strides in gelling as a team and their commitment to team unity,” said Holbrook. “What we lack in experience we are making up for in determination and commitment to growth. I am impressed with the depth and solid foundation of all the players and it will give us a lot of options with lineups.”

Katie Holbrook = new Softball Coach at FHS

via HockomockSports.com we hear that Franklin has announced Katie Holbrook as the new Softball Coach at FHS.
Franklin High athletic director Tom Angelo announced last week that Katie Holbrook had been hired to fill the softball coaching vacancy created by Kate Fallon’s move to rival King Philip. Holbrook is the owner of Brand New Ballgame, a baseball and softball training facility in Wrentham, and has coached club and showcase softball teams for more than a decade.

Holbrook was familiar with the Franklin program, community, and players from her role at Brand New Ballgame, and was excited about making the Panthers her first high school coaching role.

“Between them coming in for team practices or working in private practice or clinics with some of the kids, I’ve gotten a chance to really know them over the last six or seven years,” Holbrook said in a phone call this week. “I had a tie to Franklin and when Kate moved over I thought it’s a good, strong program, there’s a desire for strong leadership and I have a good tie to the community. It was the right place.”

She also noted that the familiarity with the players could make the transition easier. She said, “They know who I am at least by reputation, so I think that’s helpful. They know I care about Franklin, that I know about softball, and that I do this day-in, day-out. So, I think the buy-in period may be a little shorter for me than maybe someone else who was new to things.”

HockomockSports.com reports "Fallon-Comeau Takes Charge of King Philip Softball"

Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, writes about the softball coaching change happening at King Philip (and Franklin).

"Kate Fallon-Comeau is trading in her Franklin blue for the King Philip green and gold.

Fallon-Comeau, the Panthers’ softball head coach for the past nine seasons, was officially hired in the same capacity for the Warriors this week. King Philip was one of the most successful programs over the past decade, winning state championships in 2010, 2011, and 2016.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, but there was an opportunity and I went for it,” Fallon-Comeau said. “I loved every minute of my time at Franklin but I’m really excited to work with the girls at King Philip. There is a great feeder program in place, they have solid softball players every year. Like Franklin, they have a community that is passionate about softball. It just seemed like a good fit and the timing was right.”

Fallon-Comeau, the 2019 HockomockSports.com Coach of the Year, is plenty familiar with the Hockomock League. She was a star pitcher as a member of the Class of 2001 at Mansfield High. After a successful career as a catcher at Curry College, she took over the reins of the Panthers’ program in 2011. Under her guidance, Franklin went 112-86 and made the state tournament in all but two seasons. In the two seasons the Panthers didn’t make it, they had 10 and nine wins, respectively."

FHS Cherry, White, Balkus and Fallon-Comeau = HockomockSports Softball Awards

From HockoockSports.com we share the Franklin members of the Softball Awards for the Spring 2019 season.

HockomockSports First Team

Jackie Cherry – Franklin – Pitcher
Jackie Cherry (HockomockSports.com photo)
Jackie Cherry (HockomockSports.com photo)
Franklin senior pitcher Jackie Cherry set the tone for her final season by no-hitting King Philip early in the spring and she continued her strong performance throughout to help the Panthers finish second in the Kelley-Rex and reach the D1 South quarterfinal. Cherry went 11-6 on the season with an ERA of 2.12. Although she walked 50 batters and hit 17, Cherry battled and shut down some of the top teams, including Taunton, and B-R twice. Franklin coach Kate Fallon-Comeau said, “Jackie is an outstanding performer in the circle, she gets the outs her team needs to win games. Overall, her senior campaign was very successful and we wish her the best of luck at Saint Michael’s.”

HockomockSports Second Team

Maddy White – Franklin – Infield
Maddy White (HockomockSports.com photo)
Maddy White  (HockomockSports.com photo)
Franklin junior third baseman Maddy White was excellent at the hot corner for the Panthers and was the team’s leading run producer as Franklin challenged for the league title and made a run to the D1 South quarterfinal. White led the team with an average of 0.443 and drove in a team-high 26 runs this season. She only struck out four times in 82 plate appearances and committed only one error in 53 chances at third during the regular season. She compiled 35 hits this season, including six extra-base hits, and scored 17 runs. Franklin coach Kate Fallon-Comeau said, “Maddy commands the hot corner and plays aggressive, solid defense. She is an offensive powerhouse, and leads our team in RBI.”

Anna Balkus – Franklin – Outfield
Anna Balkus (HockomockSports.com photo)
Anna Balkus (HockomockSports.com photo)
Franklin junior centerfielder Anna Balkus was the primary table setter for the Panthers offense and was one of the top defensive outfielders in the league, using her speed on both at the plate and in the field to be a weapon. Balkus hit 0.352 and stole nine bases, consistently putting her in position to score, which she did 21 times. In the field, she also made 42 put-outs and had six assists (including four double plays), with a fielding percentage of 0.980. Franklin coach Kate Fallon-Comeau said, “Anna has great speed and gets an excellent read on the ball in the outfield, she commands the defense out there and doesn’t allow other teams to run on her. Offensively she is a pest on the base path, if she gets on base, she’s scoring a run.”

Coach of the Year

Franklin head coach Kate Fallon-Comeau has been named the 2019 HockomockSports.com Softball Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to within one game of a Kelley-Rex division title and to the Div. 1 South quarterfinal.

“Franklin made an unexpected run at a league title this spring,” said HockomockSports.com Managing Editor Josh Perry. “Kate had her team ready to go right from the start of the season and the Panthers were competitive in every game. They got the most of the talent on the roster and took a big step up the standings this season despite such a difficult schedule.”
Kate Fallon-Comeau (HockomockSports.com photo)
Kate Fallon-Comeau (HockomockSports.com photo)

The Panthers finished with a record of 16-7, but four of those losses came against Bridgewater-Raynham and Bishop Feehan, which were the two finalists in D1 South, by a combined six runs. All seven losses were to teams that qualified for the tournament. Franklin also won a pair of playoff games, including a road win at Braintree to reach the South quarterfinal, and handed Taunton one of its two league losses. The Panthers scored the third most runs in the league (157) and allowed the second fewest (52).

Fallon-Comeau is the first Kelley-Rex coach to win this award since Taunton’s Dave Lewry won his second straight Coach of the Year award in 2015.

"In a preliminary round matchup in MIAA Division One South tournament the 11th-seeded Franklin softball team played a near-flawless game, shutting out #22 Wellesley with a convincing 11-0 win.
After allowing a one-out single in the top of the first inning, Panther starter Jackie Cherry (4.1 IP, 1H, 5K) was lights out and didn’t allow another Raider hit while she was in the game.
Meanwhile, Franklin wasted little time to get its offense in gear. In the bottom of the first, Anna Balkus reached on a bunt single and came home two batters later on an RBI triple by Sarah Jackson."

FHS softball tops Attleboro 7-6

Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com provides the FHS vs. Attleboro softball game recap from Sunday, May 26, 2019.

"Both teams had already qualified for the postseason and Sunday morning’s matchup felt like preparation for the upcoming state tournament. It was a game in which both teams battled back multiple times and both learned what they will need to work on to make a playoff run.
In the end, Franklin made enough plays to pull out a 7-6 victory over Attleboro. Senior Emily Valentino came off the bench to pitch 2-1/3 innings of scoreless relief and drove in the game-tying run with a fifth inning single.
“Emily Valentino came in and kind of slammed the doors, so to speak,” said Franklin coach Kate Fallon. “She did a nice job out there.”
She also praised the Bombardiers for being aggressive and putting pressure on the Panthers. Fallon said, “They put a lot of pressure on us today. They came here swinging and trying to take some names. They put up a nice performance against us today and redeemed themselves from the first game (a 14-0 Franklin win).”
