Franklin High School Theatre Company Presents "Almost,Maine" - Nov 23-24, 2019

The Franklin High School Theatre Company will perform "Almost, Maine" on Saturday, November 23 and Sunday, November 24, 2019.

Welcome to Almost Maine, a place that's so far north, it's almost not in the United States. It's almost in Canada. And it's not quite a town, because its residents never got around to getting it organized. So it almost doesn't exist. One cold, clear, winter night, as the northern lights hover in the star filled sky above, the residents of Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the heats mend - almost - in this delightful midwinter night's dream.

The Franklin High School Theatre Company's production of Almost, Maine will take place at Franklin High School, 218 Oak Street, Franklin at 7:00 PM Saturday 11/23 and 2:00 PM Sunday 11/24.

  • Pre-Sale/Online Tickets: Adults - $10, Students - $5

Dean College presents "Radium Girls" - Oct 17-20

The School of the Arts at Dean College will perform Radium Girls, beginning Thursday, October 17 through Sunday, October 20, 2019.

In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court.

Written with warmth and humor, and envisioned by guest director Aaron Andrade, Radium Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece. Called a "powerful" and "engrossing" drama by critics, it offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science.

Radium Girls is presented by special arrangement with Dramatic Publishing.

The Dean College production of Radium Girls will take place in the Main Stage in the Campus Center at Dean College, 109 West Central Street, Franklin at 7:30 PM Thursday – Saturday and 2:00 PM Saturday and Sunday. General admission is $22, Seniors $12 and Children $7.

Twelfth Night is a comedy set in the Hotel de Illyria on the French Riviera. The play centers on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. "The Doubtful Guest" - LubDub Theatre Co - Nov 8

"The Doubtful Guest" - LubDub Theatre Co - Nov 8
"The Doubtful Guest" - Nov 8
"An intimate audience of guests gathers for cocktails. A door opens. Guests are invited into a shifting world of immersive theatre in which sleight-of-hand magic, dance, and ritual move the audience closer to the performers, to one another, and to the other side. The performance draws inspiration from sources including the tradition of American spiritualism, the performers' personal histories, and the question What does it mean to be a host? Devised by the company.

Debuted in February 2015 in Hell's Kitchen, followed by a sold-out run in collaboration with Guild Greene Gallery in October - November 2017. Expanded during a residency at The Orchard Project in the Summer of 2017. A new production arrives in New York City, Winter 2017-18."

This project is brought to life, in part, by the generous support of The Orchard Project and The Franklin School for the Performing Arts.

One performance scheduled for Wednesday, Nov 8 at 7:30 PM at THE BLACK BOX

S.A.F.E. presents the COAAST production of "Four Legs to Stand On"

Franklin, Medway and surrounding Towns: The S.A.F.E. Coalition presents the COAAST production of “Four Legs To Stand On,” a tool to further stem drug abuse and understand its treatment.

This production offers THEATER as a therapeutic tool to educate, understand, cope, advocate and heal our communities. The 35-minute play followed by a Q&A interchange occurs at two venues:

  • Oct 27 (Thu) Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School, 147 Pond St, Franklin @ 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:00 pm)
  • Oct 28 (Fri) The Black Box, 15 W Central St, Franklin @ 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:00 pm)

The actors confront the audience with questions rather than answers such as "Is addiction a disease or a moral weakness?" Upon reflection we can then shift the social underpinnings that stigmatize those who suffer from Substance Use Disorder and aid those suffering from disease with understanding, compassion, and support. The play challenges the audience and the community to change the status quo - and to reach out to those suffering from this disease as well as their friends and family.

“Audience members will learn about the disease, the danger of prescription drug abuse and its’ prevalence among teenagers. By reducing the stigma associated with this disease we open pathways for those that need treatment and allow families the opportunity to find the support that they so desperately need.” Jim Derick, President, S.A.F.E.

"I’ve seen a lot of plays about addiction but this one was profound and truthful.” Tom Coderre, Chief of Staff, SAMHSA

“This is my second time seeing this. I came to opening night. I actually found myself showing more empathy and care to my brother who is an addict, since then. I think that says a lot about the work.” -Audience member

From Pantherbook: Hollywood Nights, R-word, Science Night

A quick recap of three articles recently posted to Pantherbook worthy of sharing here:

Say goodbye to Lovefest and hello to Hollywood Nights, a collection of skits to be performed by FHS theatre students on April 8 and 9.
The traditional Lovefest, an annual skit-based production, was scrapped this year due to a number of reasons, ranging from snow days to administration’s desire for a more serious play

A great many words that have had relevant meaning in society have fallen out of favor but none so much as the R-word.
The students of Best Buddies have been advocating a campaign to end the use of this word. One of the advisors of Best Buddies, Mrs. Connolly, made claims that some videos supporting this campaign would be released, but no date of release has been revealed.
While it has had a purposeful meaning in medicine, the phrasing has been changed and along with it, the connotation of the R-word. The word has degraded to an insult and slang instead of a medicinal term.

On Thursday, March 13th – Franklin High School’s Science National Honors Society (SNHS) chapter hosted an exposition of intro-level science experiments and demonstrations for Franklin’s elementary and middle school students. Students and their parents toured Thursday’s “Science Night” in throngs, enjoying the night’s demonstrations and activities with smiles of wonder and fascination.
Serenaded by string instruments as they ascended up to the second and third floors, participants were directed to the four science classrooms where the event took place. Heading towards the biology lab with his parent, one younger participant compared the string ensemble to “an orchestra”.

THE BLACK BOX - now open

After spending sometime at the dedication ceremony for the new Franklin High School last Sunday, I did stop in to see THE BLACK BOX. While the views of the theater are nothing in comparison to the new high school, the concept and opportunity is as great an event for Franklin.

THE BLACK BOX - 15 West Central St, Franklin
THE BLACK BOX - 15 West Central St, Franklin

Yes, the new 850 seat FHS auditorium is amazing. If you need convincing, listen to the first concert held there. I recorded this while sitting up in the back where the acoustics still allowed for the capture of every note.

So how is THE BLACK BOX as great an opportunity for Franklin?

Simply, it is a black box and while there is nothing terribly unusual about it, the greatness of a black box is the potential it presents. This theater in downtown Franklin is already scheduled to provide cultural opportunities not previously available.

Yes, the Franklin School for Preforming Arts will use it for some of their productions. Peter Pan coming in October is the first.
