Franklin athletes Carly Alston, Farley Asmath and Calen Frongillo, participated in the second annual Unified Team Day at Gillette Stadium, hosted by the New England Revolution.
Alston, Asmath and Frongillo are a part of the Special Olympics Unified Team – made up of about a dozen Special Olympics athletes and partners – which aims to develop and strengthen the existing bonds between members of the Special Olympics Massachusetts and the New England Revolution players and promotes inclusion within sports.
The Unified team attended a Revolution training session ahead of participating in a special photo session with Revolution players.
This marked the third event of the Revs’ season-long partnership with Special Olympics, following the Unified Team Open Clinic in March and the team’s contract signing in May.
On August 21, the annual fundraising event “Bowl For a Goal,” will direct all proceeds to Special Olympics Massachusetts, climaxing the season-long partnership – more information on the annual event can be found at revolutionsoccer.net.
Six photos from the photo session with NE Revolution players Juan Agudelo and Carles Gil are shown in the Flickr slideshow:

"Launching her longest javelin throw yet at 11 feet, 10 inches, Cape Cod resident Rachael Abudaram landed first place in the Division 1, tier 16 spear-tossing event at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association/Special Olympics Massachusetts Unified Track and Field State Championship on Wednesday.
Her excitement at the accomplishment on the Milford High School fields radiated as she ascended the podium to receive her ribbon.
“I’m not the same [as most people],” said Abudaram, 17, wearing a blue Riverview School jersey, her blond-dipped bangs restrained by a pink headband. She’s an incoming senior at the boarding school in East Sandwich, and also enjoys swimming, specializing in freestyle."

“This is a step in the right direction for our unified sports programming"
A real nice and long article on the development of unified sports in the Hockomock League is well worth the time to read it. Josh Perry, the Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, writes:

"On May 17, more than 200 student-athletes gathered from nine of the 12 Hockomock League schools to celebrate inclusion, friendship, and the importance of giving the entire student body the opportunity to participate in athletics.
The inaugural Hockomock League Unified Track and Field Meet was a showcase of the growth of unified sports programs across the league and the emphasis that Hockomock schools have placed on opening sports up to the entire school population.
That Thursday started ominously with clouds and showers leftover from the day before, but as the afternoon crept closer the temperatures went up and the sun even peeked out a few times. Not that the weather really mattered because nothing was going to diminish the enthusiasm of the athletes and the partners participating in the meet or the coaches, classmates, administrators, friends, and family members that crowded around the track to show their support.
“For the athletes and the partners, it’s one thing to say you’re going to compete against another team but when you get to say this is a Hockomock thing it raises the bar and adds just that much more relevance to the event and the program,” said Franklin athletic director Tom Angelo, who started a unified sports program at Somerset-Berkeley and Plymouth North before he arrived at Franklin."
