HMEA's incredABLE Walk, Run and All-Day Family Fun includes a 5K walk, a kids' fun run and a 5K run that is registered and USATF Certified. Music, food and activities for the entire family await at the finish line. Thousands will attend. Thousands more will benefit from the services HMEA provides.
The incredABLE Walk, Run and All-Day Family Fun will be hosted by Gene Lavanchy from Fox 25 News and Steve Nelson, the all-time great New England Patriots' linebacker. The event is generously sponsored by EMC2, Rockland Trust and Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
- New incredABLE brand draws attention to what people with disabilities are ABLE to accomplish!
In celebration of the event's 15th year, HMEA rebranded the event to draw attention to the abilities — and not the disabilities — of the over 4,000 people in 110 Massachusetts communities it serves.
According to Doug McPherson, the event used to be called the Independence Run and Walk. "HMEA has been successful in helping people with Autism and other development disabilities become ABLE to live an independent life," he said. "We wanted to remind the general public that the people we serve are ABLE to contribute to their communities in profound ways."
The event also celebrates the families, care workers, educators and support staff who support HMEA's clients. "When a child or young adult is diagnosed with Autism or other developmental disabilities the entire family is affected. HMEA also helps families, school systems and medical personnel understand the challenges of raising a child with disabilities."

5th Annual Road Race - Saturday, May 2, 2015
Be part of the effort to develop the Southern New England Truckline Trail (SNETT) in Franklin.
The 5-mile run, 1.5 or 3.5 walk is sponsored by the Franklin Bellingham Rail Trail Committee and proceeds go toward development of the SNETT multi-use trail.

3rd annual Run, Walk and Score Road Race - Sep 21
The Franklin Girl's Ice Hockey Boosters Club is holding a fund raiser in September.

The 3rd annual Run, Walk and Score Road Race! takes place in the safe neighborhood of Jefferson Road in Franklin. It starts in the roadway of Jefferson Elementary school and takes a left onto Jefferson Road. The 2K race splits from the 5K when the 2K runners turn left onto Skipper Circle while the 5K runners continue until they turn right onto Peters Lane and again onto Jackson Circle. Both races finish at the same point in the parking area of Jefferson School. The routes are both USATF certified.
The proceeds from the race support scholarships, equipment, team activities and transportation.
Event details and schedule
Runners should be registered by 9am in order to have a timely start at 9:30am. Questions about the race can be sent to FHSGirlsHockey@gmail.com. The lobby and restrooms of the Jefferson Elementary School will be available for race participants

We Won't Lay Down 2 Cancer Run, Walk, or Crawl 5K
The We Won't Lay Down 2 Cancer Run, Walk or Crawl 5k is less than 2 weeks away and only a few more days to pre-register.

Kayla is a student at FHS and her mom Kris puts together a great family day here in Franklin to benefit charities that have played special roles in her family's life. * The benefitting charities work to promote mutually respectful relationships between people of all abilities. Are we born to run?
As a life long runner, a lover of cross country (where to be successful you need to run in a pack), Christopher McDougal's TED Talk strikes a resounding bell for me. Will I ditch my shoes and start running longer? I don't think so. Ditching shoes to run in an urban environment is too risky. Nevermind the kind of weather we are having, running wouldn't be practical at all.
You do need to walk before you run. And in this weather, if you don't want to venture outside as the sidewalks are not cleared enough, go to the High School. Tue-Wed-Thu evenings beginning about 5:30 (as I recall) there is an indoor walking club. You can walk the halls of the school in the relative comfort of the indoor space and get the healthy exercise your body craves.
As the weather improves, move the walk outside. Walk through your neighborhood, walk to downtown and back, explore side roads in Franklin. There are lots of good opportunities for walking.
When you can walk 4-5 miles comfortably, when you can walk and talk the whole way without breathing heavy, then, and only then, should you consider bringing your walk to a faster pace. After being comfortable at a faster pace for some time (perhaps several weeks), then you can consider taking your faster walking pace into a jog or easy running pace.
What kind of pace is that? Covering the 5 miles in close to an hour. If you can do the 5 miles in under an hour, you should be ready.
Should everyone run? Maybe not, but most everyone should be able to walk.

The Horace Mann Education Associates - HMEA, Inc. is located here in Franklin, MA but their effective service delivery is to over 100 communities in MA.
The annual fund raiser for HMEA is the 5K Race/Walk and Family Fun Day scheduled for May 23, 2010.
In addition to working the road race registration table (and providing splits at the 2 mile mark), I have decided to help HMEA do some fund raising this year.

And our great friends and inspiration to many, "TEAM HOYT", Dick and Rick will be on hand again this year -- plus we're pretty sure there will be a few other celebrities and mascots on hand as well!
So come on down and participate in the fun...there's raffle prizes, food, tee shirts for participants (while they last), prizes, a Kids Corner filled with games and activities, a Kids "FUN RUN" and so much more...

"the school system has declined to come out and endorse cycling to school"
Arlington has an interesting discussion underway about cycling to school. Basically, in one community that is acknowledged as leading the cycling effort, the Arlington School Dept banned students cycling to school. There is no busing as most homes are located within one mile of their elementary school. The schools do not have bike racks. Most of the traffic the cyclists would have to navigate through is other parents dropping off kids at school.
This is an educational opportunity for better health practices (cycling vs autos) apparently being missed.

HMEA 5K Race/Walk - May 23rd
The Horace Mann Education Associates - HMEA, Inc. is located here in Franklin, MA but their effective service delivery is to over 100 communities in MA.
HMEA has a long history of providing innovative services in school, at work, at home and in the community and now serve over 2400 children and adults with developmental disabilities. Services include: Residential, Day and Family supports, and services for children.
HMEA's Employment Programs provides people with disabilities the opportunity to pursue meaningful employment either on a full- or part-time basis. For people in the Employment Program who work part-time, HMEA encourages volunteering for community organizations, or leisure and recreation activities to supplement their day.
HMEA's Employment Programs serve people 22 years of age and older who live within the commuting distance of program locations in the following cities and towns: Bellingham, Clinton, Hopedale, Plainville and Worcester
The annual fund raiser for HMEA is the 5K Race/Walk and Family Fun Day scheduled for May 23, 2010.

SAVE THE DATE...Sunday, May 23, 2010 HMEA's 9th Annual Independence 5K Walk/Run in the Park - MARK YOUR CALENDARS and grab your sneakers to participate in this "Fun-filled Family Day fundraising event...
This event, which is hosted by our good friends at EMC2 Corporation in Franklin, MA gathers 2,000 or more people to help HMEA continue its mission to make a difference in people's lives. AND, all the money raised is returned to the many programs at HMEA, which supports 2,400 children and adults with intellectual challenges and developmental disabilities.
Once again we have Gene Lavanchy from Fox News25 and tentatively Gail Huff from WCVB-TV Channel performing hosting duties for us. And our great friends and inspiration to many, "TEAM HOYT", Dick and Rick will be on hand again this year -- plus we're pretty sure there will be a few other celebrities and mascots on hand as well!
So come on down and participate in the fun...there's raffle prizes, food, tee shirts for participants (while they last), prizes, a Kids Corner filled with games and activities, a Kids "FUN RUN" and so much more...
In addition to working the road race registration table (and providing splits at the 2 mile mark), I have decided to help HMEA do some fund raising this year.

People at odds over a feral cat colony at Highwood Condominiums may get a resolution tonight.
The condominium complex's board of trustees will discuss the matter and possibly decide to take action at a meeting open only to condo owners, said property manager Roy Blanchard.
Blanchard declined to talk about the controversy.
"This doesn't need to be in the press anymore. We can take care of our own issues," he said.
