Franklin Residents: Trails and Walking Paths to use (at a social distance!) with others

Trails and Walking Paths

We have created a Trails and Walking Paths site to serve as a resource to our community. During these uncertain and unprecedented times, it is still important to get outside, breathe fresh air and de-stress, all while practicing social distancing.

We hope you find it helpful and use the trails and paths respectfully and responsibly. Be well! https://bit.ly/3bDgozC

MA Walking Tour Concert (video)

We shared the Massachusetts Walking Tour schedule here in June. This video shares some highlights of the walk as well as the concert that took place in Norfolk.

"The Massachusetts Walking Tour -- this year highlighting the local area’s Ten Mile River Watershed -- runs June 17 through 29. All on foot, the traveling musicians give a free concert in each community they stop at and host daily community hikes to bring awareness to local natural resources. In each town, they invite local performers to share the stage with them, promoting local arts and culture in the process.

Like traveling minstrels of old, songwriters Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards are getting ready to pack up their instruments and other gear and take their show on the road.

The pair is marking the 10th year of their Massachusetts Walking Tour - this year highlighting the region’s Ten Mile River Watershed."

marijuana cultivation facility changes ownership
"The Cannabis Control Commission on Thursday approved the sale of New England Treatment Access, which operates a marijuana cultivation facility in Franklin, but not before commissioners raised concerns about the buyer’s track record in Florida.
The vote was unanimous in favor of the sale to Georgia-based Surterra Wellness, led by the former head of the Wrigley chewing gum empire William “Beau” Wrigley Jr., but commissioners added conditions to require Surterra to submit plans to comply with Massachusetts regulations around edible products, advertising and marketing.
Those conditions, requested by Commissioner Kay Doyle, stemmed from reports that a Surterra facility that processes marijuana products was shut down for having not completed a food safety inspection and that the company violated Florida restrictions around advertising and marketing of medical marijuana products."

Eighth Annual Massachusetts Walking Tour arrives in Franklin - June 23

The Eighth Annual Massachusetts Walking Tour, founded by songwriting duo Mark Mandeville and Raianne Richards, will be coming this year to the Blackstone Valley – performing 11 free community concerts while traversing the state on foot. Since 2010, Mandeville and Richards have organized now over 100 coffeehouse style concerts which showcase local musicians and artists across the state – creating a quality evening program for all ages and an opportunity for talent young and old to be enjoyed by a listening audience. Venues chosen for these community concerts include public libraries, town parks, and historical properties – and this year all events have been funded through grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council program.

Carrying approximately 40-50 lbs of gear and instruments, the Massachusetts Walking Troupe, including veteran members Mark Kilianski (guitar, banjo) and Amy Alvey (fiddle), will be hiking from concert to concert using the Blackstone Valley’s many recreational trails – Southern New England Trunkline Trail (SNETT), Charles River Bikeway, and trails within DCR’s Riverbend Farm to name a few.

Tiny leaf destroyers

On one of my morning walks, I was startled to see these threads hanging from a row of trees. The rising sun light was striking the threads such that they were visible. Multiple threads hanging from the trees. Swinging in the gentle breeze.

it was a challenge to try and get a photo

I couldn't get a view of the multiple threads. They were moving too much.

Not sure exactly what kind of bug these are but they do damage to the trees.

Indian Rock (video)

On my walk I diverged to explore what I believe is Indian Rock. It is supposed to be located off Jordan Road and off Indian Lane. Further off Indian Lane, there is another side street that according to Google maps is called King Phillip Road. (There is no street sign on the corner however.) At the end of this cul-de-sac, there are well worn trails to the rock.

Walking - Trees - part 2

While I shared several photos of trees from the walk last Saturday earlier this week, there are a few more from Sunday to share here.

It was much sunny on Sunday so the tree against the blue sky makes for a good view

With just the bare branches, a sickness, some sort of mold is very evident on this tree.

Franklin Walk - Tree'd

The walk Saturday was somewhat warmer than other Saturday's but not as sunny.

There were many clouds but no rain (fortunately - at least by the time I went out).

I found a bear but not a fierce one

I began to notice the trees. Yes, really notice them. They are standing. Bare. Bending with the breeze.

While a common conversation recently was that we had had enough of winter, the trees did not complain.

They may have leaned with the wind, or bent with the snow, maybe even lost a branch when the snow was too heavy.

There may be a couple more weekends to observe the trees around us before the bud and break out in leaves. Take a walk and see what trees are in your neighborhood.
