On Taxes, MA in Middle of Pack
The money that we use to provide police and fire protection, to maintain our roads and transit systems, to support the one million kids in our public schools, and to provide other vital services throughout our communities comes largely from state and local taxes.

According to 2011 data recently released by the census bureau, state and local taxes in Massachusetts amount to 10.4% of our total income, which is slightly below the national average of 10.6%.

Compared with other states, Massachusetts ranks 21st, meaning there are 20 states with a higher level of taxation and 29 with lower rates.

Measuring taxes in this way (as a percentage of personal income) provides the most accurate comparisons. It involves looking at the total amount of money collected through state and local taxes and then seeing what share that is of the total income earned in the state.

"a keen focus on the task ahead"

In a recap of the response to the marathon bombing, area communities sent police and law enforcement representatives to Boston.
Franklin police Sgt. James West, an element leader in the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council’s SWAT team, was preparing to begin his 3 p.m. shift when he saw the first reports of the twin explosions appear on the news. He immediately checked his phone and pager, expecting to get a call.
The council, a consortium of more than 40 local police departments and law enforcement agencies, contains six divisions: a canine unit, computer crime unit, crisis negotiation team, mobile operations motorcycle unit, regional response team and SWAT team.
In all, at least 100 officers from the council would be activated.

Free the grapes! (video)

In the midst of vacation season, wouldn't it be nice to be able to ship some wine back home to MA.
Massachusetts wine lovers still cannot purchase wines directly from out-of-state wineries. But the legislature is now considering House Bill 294, a favorable bill that would replace an unconstitutional law with a proven solution. However, some Massachusetts package stores and the politically powerful wholesalers remain opposed to consumers choosing their own wine
2013 is going to be the year for consumer choice in wine, but we need your help:

Step 1: Spread the word: Tell your friends about us on Facebook (and share our page, Facebook.com/freethegrapes
Step 2: Write your legislator! This is really easy (and quick) to do online through our Action Alert!
Step 3: Join our email list: You’ll need to know the bill number as soon as we have it, so join the email list and we’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest news.

Angela Lee Duckworth: "The Key to Success? Grit"

Leaving a high-flying job in consulting, Angela Lee Duckworth took a job teaching math to seventh graders in a New York public school. She quickly realized that IQ wasn’t the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. Here, she explains her theory of “grit” as a predictor of success.

Food recycling as a climate issue (audio)

Why is food recycling a climate issue?
Recently the U.S. joined the U.N. in launching programs to combat food waste. Fortunately, right here in Arlington we already have a great model for doing just that. Our guest on this edition of the Climate Hawk Companion is DeAnne Dupont, has been walking the talk, and was instrumental in establishing the Minuteman Food Recovery Project as a collaboration between the Minuteman High School Parent’s Association and Sustainable Arlington
The project collects from Panera Breads, Trader Joe’s and other local businesses in the Arlington, Massachusetts area and distributes it to people who need this food. This makes for a better community and fewer greenhouse gases. Listen to the podcast to catch up on how it all works.

What is happening here in Franklin?
The Franklin Food Pantry coordinates pickups from many local businesses to support the clients the Food Pantry serves. Periodic pickups from Panera Bread, BJ Warehouse, Trader Joe's, Stop and Shop, The Cake Bar, etc. are coordinated and conducted by Food Pantry volunteers. If the pickup is of a quantity that the Food Pantry can't use within the window for the item, the Food Pantry does share with the Senior Center and other places where the items can be used.
