In the News: Democratic governor candidates, Franklin Ed Foundation, BAA virtual marathon


The five Democrats running for governor met on Wednesday to debate the state's troubled child welfare agency, a proposed $2.2 billion rail line and health care. 
Candidate Don Berwick has become more fully supportive of a single-payer, MassHealth-for-all health care system, while his rival for the office Joe Avellone has become vocal in opposing that tack. 
"The more I've looked at it the more I'm convinced it's the right way to go," Berwick told the News Service after a debate at the Boston Globe. At a forum in Jamaica Plain, Berwick said he would favor the universal health care model supported by some liberal activists if health care costs continue to grow.

The Franklin Education Foundation has set a date for this year’s Trivia Bee. 
The foundation, which supports teachers at Franklin Public Schools with annual grants, will hold its popular fundraising event Wednesday, March 19, at 7 p.m. at the Horace Mann Middle School, 224 Oak St. 
Since 1997, the Bee has been the foundation’s largest fundraiser, helping it donate more than $300,000 to the schools.

The Boston Athletic Association today announced the launch of a new mobile app that will allow a virtual community of runners to participate in this spring’s Boston Marathon. 
Available for Apple and Android devices, the application lets runners from all over the world pick a distance of their choosing and participate “in the athletic spirit of the event,” a press release from the association said.

"It’s exciting to see the new science offerings"

Realtor Warren Reynolds has a nice write up on the science program at Franklin High School.
The opening of the new Franklin High School this fall will enable the Franklin Public School system to pursue the ambitious goal of offering its students the “premier high school science program in Massachusetts” according to Peter Light, Principal of the Franklin High School. Mr. Light recently alluded to this exciting prospect at an orientation held at the old high school for incoming 8th grade students and parents.

"It came on really fast"

Milford Daily News recaps the storm from the surrounding area DPW perspectives:
Franklin DPW Director Robert Cantoreggi said the circumstances of the storm were positive. 
"The timing was pretty good - most people knew about the storm, and a lot of people stayed off the roads," he said, adding that school cancellations helped the situation. 
Many directors said they were concerned about the salt supply for the storm, but they all said their stores were adequate. 
"We were running low earlier, but there was a lull and we were able to fill up our supplies," said Bellingham DPW Director Donald DiMartino. 
Cantoreggi said Franklin was set on salt supplies, but noted that the season has been hard on vendors.

Franklin Schools: School Status for Thursday - Feb 6, 2014

A message from FRANKLIN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT

Hello
By now I hope you are all plowed/shoveled out. In anticipation of school opening tomorrow a few reminders. The temperature will drop this evening and much of the snow/sleet/slush will freeze. DPW will treat the parking lots and roads however,  surfaces will not be dry. Please take caution to reduce speeds and stay 100 feet behind all school buses (as per law). If you have young drivers in your home please caution them to reduce speed and not follow other cars too closely. 
DPW  has done an exceptional jobs clearing streets and parking lots.  Due to the volume and density of the snow,  please be advised  that  sidewalks will not be plowed by the opening of school.  As a result we will initiate emergency bussing for our students who are walkers. Buses will pick up  any student seen walking.  Parents of a walker may access our web site for the list of bus numbers and stops and you can access transportation without a bus pass. 
Finally, any  parent/guardian has concerns about getting child to school you may exercise your right to keep child home. Please contact the school and let them be aware so it is recorded as an excused absence.

"not everyone praised the regulations"


Smoking will no longer be allowed at private membership clubs after April 1, when new Board of Health tobacco regulations go into effect. 
Despite opposition from the Franklin Rod & Gun Club, the board adopted the regulation on Tuesday as well as several more restricting the sale of tobacco products in town. 
Beginning April 1, stores, under the regulations, won’t be able to sell blunt wraps — flavored tobacco rolling papers — and four packs of cigars priced under $2.50, aimed at curbing the number of teenage smokers in town.

Franklin Public Schools: "decision will be made in the morning"

We have had several in inquiries from students and parents as to the decision  to open school tomorrow. The impact of weather on this region is changing. At this time we are not in a position to have accurate information and much will depend on overnight temperatures and when the precipitation begins. The decision will be made in the morning after consultation with public safety officials.

Winter storm warning

National Grid crews are prepared for a winter storm bearing down on the Northeast region tonight and Wednesday, with the most severe weather predicted to occur Wednesday morning. Forecasts are calling for high winds, heavy, wet snowfall and possible ice accumulations along the New England coast that could damage trees and result in power outages. Flooding along coastal areas is also a concern and can cause interruptions in natural gas service.

While we have additional crews and equipment resources to restore outages as swiftly as possible, we still advise customers to be prepared for service interruptions. It's a good idea to have a number of working flashlights, at least one battery-operated radio and an extra supply of batteries in your home. A radio is a good way to stay in touch, as National Grid provides news media with timely information regarding service restoration efforts.

If you experience a power outage, you can report it in the Outage Central section of our website or by calling 1-800-465-1212. For more information on how you can stay safe, please visit our Storm Safety and Hypothermia pages.

How you can stay informed before, during and after the storm

In addition to radio reports, National Grid has a number of ways for you to stay connected and informed about service issues and interruptions during storms. You can receive text message alerts and updates by texting the word STORM to NGRID (64743) or follow the storm on your mobile devices by downloading the National Grid mobile app from GooglePlay or iTunes stores. And we also provide storm and restoration updates through Facebook and Twitter.

Tips to weather the storm

  • National Grid customers who experience outages should call National Grid's outage line at 1-800-465-1212 immediately to expedite restoration.
  • People who depend on electric-powered life support equipment, such as a respirator, should let National Grid know. To register as a life support customer, call the company's Customer Service Center at 1-800-322-3223.
  • Never touch downed power lines, and always assume that any fallen lines are live electric wires. If you see one, report it immediately to National Grid or your local emergency response organization.
  • Power problems can sometimes interrupt public water supply systems or disable well pumps, so it's an especially good idea to keep a supply of bottled drinking water handy, as well as some canned food.
  • If you lose power, turn off any appliances that were on when the power went off, but leave one light on so you will know when power is restored.
  • If you use a generator to supply power during an outage, be sure to operate it outdoors. Before operating generators, disconnect from National Grid's system by shutting off the main breaker located in the electric service panel. Failure to do this could jeopardize the safety of line crews and the public.
  • NEVER burn wood or coal in an indoor area without proper venting. Portable gas and charcoal grills intended for outside use should never be used indoors, or even inside an open garage.
  • NEVER use your gas range to heat your apartment or house. Your range's oven and top burners are designed to cook your food, NOT to heat your home. Prolonged use can reduce oxygen levels in the home and contribute to unusually excessive levels of carbon monoxide.

Many people shy away from video because of the perceived complexity to create them. Here are four steps to get you on your way to creating your own video campaign:

1. What do you want your video to accomplish?

The first thing you want to start to thinking about is what you want your video to be used for. Do you wanted more visitors to your website? Do you want people to come into your store? Or, do you want to teach people about your product? There are many reasons your business may need a video - you just have to find it! 

To help you answer the question above, write out a list of each feature of your product or service. Next to each feature, list the benefits they provide (and the benefits of those benefits). For example, a graphic designer offers high-quality design services. The resulting benefit is a professional company image. A professional image will attract more customers because they see the company as professional and trustworthy. So ultimately, the benefit of high-quality design is to gain more customers and make more money.

Once you have your benefits listed, make a list of people who have a need that your benefit fulfills. For example, a graphic designer could choose to target businesses interested in increasing their client base. While this is still too general, you now have a base to start from.

2. Who is your target audience?

Finding your target audience is one of the things you should really spend some time thinking about. Your audience is not everyone. You should narrowly define your audience and then speak directly to them. It helps to listen to your story with your audience's ears.  To do this, answer these simple questions: who are your current customers, and why do they buy from you? Look for common characteristics and interests. Which ones bring in the most business? It is very likely that other people who like them could also benefit from your product/service.

3. What do you want that audience to know, think and feel after they watch your video?

Next you will have to talk in a way your viewers can easily get or you're going to lose them. You speak differently when selling to an executive than to the average consumer. You need to appeal to the executive's bottom line and they typically need more detail to make a better buying decision. If you're a new company that nobody has ever heard of, you need them to know why they should use you (or your product) over the competition, rather than going into detail about what you're selling.  As a  general rule, write in a natural and conversational manner, and in a way that you want it to sound. In most cases, "so you're looking for a demo video…" sounds better and more intuitive than "so you are looking for a demo video…" the latter sounds too mechanical and isn't how people naturally speak. Think about your audience when you're writing. Target the right person and cater your video to them.

From the very beginning of the video you will want to show them relevance. If you tap into their emotions, they're much more likely to keep watching. If you're taking the emotional route, it could be funny, upsetting, uplifting, or quirkyWhatever emotion, it has to hit hard. When they are done watching your video they should want to know more.

4. What methods could you use to share your video?

And the final step once you have completed your video is to share your video. There are endless options to use a video after it is produced but the four most important ones are your website, Facebook, Blogs and YouTube. All of these things are useful tools to boost engagement and drive traffic.

As you watch the video see if you can see how these four steps were followed. After you watch the video you know exactly what they do. They send big files to anyone securely and easily using the web. They knew what the video would accomplish and tapped into the viewers' emotions.

The video speaks directly to the consumer and teaches them exactly what their product does in a clever way.
