Franklin's Single Soldier

How many times have you gone by the Town Common and wondered why there are two Civil War monuments? 

There is one along Main St with the Gettysburg Address on a bronze plate

And then there is the tall one in the center and set back along the High St side of the Common.

It was 150 years ago this April 9, in a house at a dusty crossroads in rural Virginia, that the Civil War ended. Even all these decades later, that struggle remains, for better and for worse, the sovereign event in American history.

The article in Yankee Magazine goes on to talk about the single soldier monument that many New England commnities have. Franklin is one of them.

Hence, the unfailing presence all over our region of memorials to local men who served in the war, in particular the ubiquitous “Single Soldier,” a freestanding figure of a Civil War infantryman cast in stone or bronze, equipped with the familiar kepi-style cap, a coat or cape, a cartridge box and bayonet on his belt, and a rifle. If you live in New England, then at least one of these soldiers is your neighbor.

Both FHS lacrosse teams top Mansfield

Both FHS lacrosse teams had a winning day against Hockomock rival Mansfield. The girls won 20-9 and the boys won 8-6. Hockomock Sports provides a full write up of the girls game here:

The game was not more than 14 seconds old and the visitors had a shock lead. With Concord-Carlisle waiting in the next game, there was a thought that maybe Franklin was going to be caught looking ahead and allow Mansfield to steal a league win. 

Ten minutes and six goals later, the Panthers had set that fear to rest and showed that, while the program is striving to be considered among the handful of top teams in the state, keeping the Hockomock League title in Franklin is just as important. 

Emily Jeffries and Julia Jette each scored four goals and Emily Spath chipped in with a first half hat trick, as the Panthers rolled to a 20-9 victory over the visiting Hornets on Wednesday afternoon at Pisini Field. 

“We always want to do well in the Hockomock and Mansfield is a good team,” explained Franklin coach Kristen Igoe after the game. “We definitely want to win the league, so we always come out ready for these games.”

Franklin Art Association: Meeting - May 6

The Franklin Art Association will meet Wednesday, May 6th from 6:30 to 9:00 pm for our last meeting until September. 

It will be held at the Franklin Senior Center, 10 Daniel McCahill Street. Refreshments and socialization will begin at 6:30.

The May meeting will be an opportunity to create art together, rather than have a guest artist. This fun session will offer a variety of still life arrangements for members and guests to draw, paint or photograph. Please bring all materials needed to work in the medium of your choice. Although still life arrangements will be set up, feel free to bring your own objects.

Meetings are free and opened to the public.

"Fresh off the Palette" art show

"Fresh off the Palette"

Seven artists called "The Bud's" will be exhibiting their paintings the month of May, at the Norfolk Public Library, 139 Main Street, Norfolk, MA 02056

These paintings have been created in the fields, on the shore and in the studios. Watercolors, pastels, and oil paintings will be exhibited.

A gala wine and finger foods reception will be held Saturday, May 9th, 2015 from 3 pm to 5 pm.  It is free and opened to the public.

Artists participating will be Richard Fotland, Gail Eckberg, Susan Sheridan, Paul Peterson, Tina Guarino, Paul Guarino and Adele Corrigan. All are members of many regional art associations.

Come and join us to celebrate spring.

Giguere named "next principal of Bellingham High School"

Lucas Giguere, a former U.S. Marine sergeant and Franklin teacher, has been named the next principal of Bellingham High School. 

Superintendent Edward Fleury announced the posting Tuesday night after a month-long search. 

“He is a good fit for Bellingham,” Fleury said. 

Giguere, 35, was one of 30 candidates who applied for the job to succeed Principal Peter Marano, who next school year becomes superintendent of schools. The other finalist for the position was Eileen Belastock, the principal of Winthrop High School.
