Lake Pearl Plunge 5K - Aug 22

Good morning! 

I'm wondering if you could help us spread the word for the Lake Pearl Plunge 5K this Saturday, August 22! 

We are trying to raise money to build a new boat ramp at the Lake Pearl Boat Launch which currently has deteriorated so far that it causes damage to boats and truck often. It also causes pollution to the lake because trucks have to back so far into the water to launch their boat that the truck exhausts are fully submerged, due to the extremely shallow depth at the boat launch. 

I know a LOT of Franklin-ers that love and use the lake and would greatly benefit from the restorations we are raising money for. It will cost just under $20k to rebuild and we are over 90% of the way to our goal. 

The 5k will take place on August 22 at Lake Pearl 299 Creek St. Wrentham. Check in will open at 8 and the race will start at 9. Runners will get to run around Lake Archer and finish with a splash as they plunge into Lake Pearl at the finish line. 

We have received massive amounts of support from local businesses in the form of sponsorships and prize donations for the runners. Prizes include gift cards to Davios in Foxboro, MacDeli in Franklin, Bass Pro Shops, James' Breakfast and More in Wrentham, and more. Bass Pro has also donated goody bags for the first 100 participants to register that include goodies from many local businesses!

It has truly evolved into a community project, with astounding support coming from businesses such as Lake Pearl (who is also hosting the event), Wrentham Cooperative Bank, C3 Commercial Construction Consulting, Inc., Anderson Signs, R. In the News: animals at the Library, lightning strikes, TEDxNatick being scheduled

Rabbits, frogs and turtles are among the animals that could be making an appearance at the Franklin Public Library this afternoon. 

The library is set to host a "Wild Heroes" program by Animal World Experience at 4 p.m. today, looking to educate children about the creatures that inhabit the natural world. 

The event, said library Director Felicia Oti, is part of a slate of programs that has been running throughout the summer.

Several lightning strikes were reported during a Tuesday afternoon storm. 

The Franklin Fire Department reported via its Twitter account that it had been dispatched to a house struck by lightning on Hunters Run at approximately 5:10 p.m. 

About a half-hour later - at 5:42 p.m. - the department reported, again through Twitter, that it had responded to a house fire at Royal Court. 

Both situations were dealt with, though an estimate of the damage done was not immediately available.

Rosemary Driscoll, one of several organizers of the event, said organizers are planning for the event and looking for ideas for speakers. The group is also happy to have more people help out. 

Natick Education Foundation sponsored a simulcast viewing of a TED youth conference last year. Driscoll, president of the foundation, said TEDxNatick is much broader and not a specific Natick Education Foundation event, though the foundation expects to be a sponsor. 

“This is much more about a community event than it is a straight public education event,” Driscoll said. “The whole idea is it’s ideas that inspire.”

Hockomock YMCA: TPC Boston Hosts Integration Initiative Golf Clinic

This summer, TPC Boston hosted two golf clinics for members of the Hockomock Area YMCA’s Integration Initiative. Participants were given tips from the best, receiving instruction in putting, chipping, and full swing from professional staff at TPC Boston. Later, the newly trained golfers hit the links and played a few holes on the championship course, the same course that will host the best players in the world on Labor Day weekend for the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Among the participants were some of Franklin’s shining stars: Datta Baplata, Peter Willis, and Douglas McNulty. They were joined by Hockomock Area YMCA staff, additional members of the Integration Initiative, as well as Patriots Legend Steve King and several other generous donors who support the Initiative.

This is the fourth year that TPC Boston has hosted these clinics. While many of the participants were golfing for the first time, some of the kids had years of experience and were excited to return. Hockomock Area YMCA President Ed Hurley observed how some of the participants “have been playing for several years now as a result of this experience.” The golfers from the Integration Initiative have developed their game so much that the Hockomock Y was able to start a 20-person integrated golf team in 2014, a program which is still going strong.

The day, however, was not over after the golfers finished the course. They were treated to some pizza provided by Domino’s and then given a special surprise: tickets to the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston. Hurley smiled as he commented on how the kids would watch the best players in the world “and they can tell their friends they played on the same course.”

“I want to thank everybody at TPC Boston…for doing this again for us every year. It’s something the kids look forward to and we look forward to. It’s a great day for our Y and the kids and our Integration Initiative,” said a grateful Ed Hurley. The Hockomock YMCA is proud to have experienced another successful golf clinic thanks to TPC Boston and the Integration Initiative.

The Hockomock Y’s Integration Initiative has been at work for 11 years, fostering an environment of inclusion and respect for young people with special needs. The Initiative has positively impacted over 700 families, a number which grows more and more every year thanks to events like the TPC golf clinic.

Memory Café - Thursday - Aug 20 - 3:00 PM

Please join us this Thursday at the Franklin Senior Center for our monthly Memory Café. Memory cafes are places for people with memory loss to share in social time with their caregivers and others.

This month we plan to do a very simple flower arrangement with flowers donated by Hillside Nurseries. We will have a refreshment and just chat and relax!

Memory cafes are popping up around the state and nationally as well. Locally the cafes are coordinated by Beth Soltzberg at Jewish Friends and Family Services in Waltham, Mass. There are several cafes in our area and all are open to the public and are free of charge.

"Fatal drug overdoses claimed more than a thousand lives in Massachusetts last year"

“The High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program helps federal, state, and local authorities to coordinate drug enforcement operations, support prevention efforts and improve public health and safety,” said Botticelli, who served as director of Massachusetts substance abuse services from 2003 to 2012 where he oversaw a pilot program for Quincy police to begin carrying naloxone to treat opioid overdoses. 

The New England HIDTA also will receive $265,000 to advance a range of drug use prevention initiatives and to support HIDTA operations. 

“This federal funding comes at a critical time in Massachusetts and New England’s effort to tame this scourge of heroin and prescription drug abuse," said Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass. "Heroin overdoses are taking lives at an unprecedented rate. Stemming this tide will require a comprehensive strategy that teams public health, science, medicine, and law enforcement on the federal, state and local levels to stop addiction before it takes hold and secure treatment when and where its needed most."

Dean College and the Massachusetts Star Players proudly present “The Wiz” in a series of live performances at The Main Stage Theater on the Dean Campus in Franklin, MA. Shows start at 7:30 PM on August 20th, 21st and 22nd and at 2 PM on August 22nd and 23rd.

“The Wiz” is a seven-time Tony Award-winning musical that retells the classic musical “The Wizard of Oz.” This show follows the story of Dorothy, a farm girl who wishes to see more than Kansas. Through her adventures in the Land of Oz, she encounters the impossible, which assures her that home is where the heart is.

"It's not a new position - there's no new budget being added"

The Franklin School District has made a number of personnel changes ahead of the coming school year. 

The School Committee heard a report on the moves, and voted to name Joyce Edwards as assistant superintendent at its meeting last week. 

Superintendent Maureen Sabolinski characterized the assistant superintendent move as more of a reorganization than anything else. 

"(Edwards') role had been director of instructional services," she said. "It's a new title, but the same person in the role."

"Pedro, a 4-year-old Chihuahua and terrier mix, was adopted when he was just nine 9 weeks old, but was turned over to Just a Touch Rescue after a year because he barked. 

Kikka, an 11-year-old Pomeranian who is blind in one eye, was turned over to the organization because her owners couldn’t afford to pay fix an infection that came from breeding. 

Split, a 12-year-old Australian Shepherd, was brought to a vet to be euthanized because the owner “didn’t want him anymore,” said Debbie Fahrenholtz, founder and president of the organization."

New high school ball fields making progress

On the walk last weekend, I checked out the progress on the ball fields. The softball and baseball fields are coming along. The tennis courts are coming along. The new turf field is in the finishing stages also. 

Actually, it look like the turf was being delivered Friday morning so the next photos may include some green carpeting.

Franklin Family Movie Night - Aug 21 - "Toy Story"

Bring your whole family and enjoy watching Toy Story on the big screen in a classic Franklin setting - Beaver Pond! 

The movie itself will start at dusk, but WOODY AND BUZZ ARRIVE AT 7:00!

Kids will get an opportunity to meet and play games with both characters. 

In addition to the characters arriving early, a whole host of local small businesses will be represented at booths offering treats, fun toys, and other retail offerings! The marketplace opens at 6:30.

Samantha Moccia, Greater Norfolk’s 2016 Distinguished Young Woman, and Kendra Dombroski, Greater Franklin’s 2016 Distinguished Young Woman will travel to Holyoke for the week of Aug. 9 to participate in the Distinguished Young Women Massachusetts State Program. 

Both young women participated in the local DYW preliminary program in May and won their respective titles with accompanying scholarships and the opportunity to advance to the state level of the national scholarship program for high school girls.

MassBudget: Analyzing the State Budget for FY 2016

MassBudget    Information.    Participation.  Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center    Democracy. Analyzing the State Budget for FY 2016  With the House and Senate having overridden a number of the Governor's vetoes, the Fiscal Year 2016 (FY 2016) budget is now largely complete. This year's budget makes few major changes in overall funding provided to educate our children, keep our communities safe, protect our most vulnerable, strengthen our economy and improve the quality of life in our communities. Click HERE for our full analysis. The budget does include several significant new initiatives, including: Increasing the value of the state earned income tax credit from 15% of the federal credit to 23%. This will provide additional income to over 400,000 lower wage workers and their families (click HERE for town-by-town detail). Besides improving lives now by helping parents to pay for necessities like food and clothing for their children, this additional support is also likely to expand opportunity for these children over the long run: there is growing evidence that when the income of a lower income family increases, the children often do better in school and earn more as adults. Providing significant new tools for the administration to improve management at the MBTA. The budget creates a new MBTA Control Board and authorizes the Secretary of Transportation to appoint the Director of the MBTA. The budget also suspends for three years the Taxpayer Protection Act (commonly called the Pacheco Law) that regulates privatization. The law requires that privatization efforts achieve savings by efficiency improvements rather than by reducing pay and benefits for workers (click HERE for more detail). Addressing substance abuse with targeted investments throughout MassHealth, public health and mental health. In particular, new initiatives support first responders and others in the community struggling to address the challenge of opioid addiction. The final budget, like the budget proposed by the governor back in March, relies heavily on temporary strategies to balance the budget. It spends $300 million in capital gains tax revenue that would have gone into the Rainy Day Fund under current law. It also counts on $100 million from a tax amnesty and $116 million from putting off paying some of our FY 2016 MassHealth bills into FY 2017. As has been the case for many years, state budget choices are being shaped by fiscal challenges that date back to the late 1990s: after cutting the income tax by over $3 billion dollars between 1998 and 2002 our state has had to make deep cuts in areas like higher education, local aid, and public health. Meanwhile, the highest income residents in the Commonwealth are paying a substantially smaller share of their income in state and local taxes than do the other 99%. If our tax system were reformed so that the highest income 1% of taxpayers paid roughly the same share of their income in taxes as everyone else, that would raise about $2 billion that could be invested in things like making college affordable, improving our transportation systems, and providing all children with the supports they need to thrive.
