Franklin Youth Baseball awards four scholarships

Franklin Youth Baseball was honored to present this year’s scholarships to four outstanding young men. Three FYBO scholarships ($750 each) were given to Joseph Clark, Tyler Langevin, and Jason Collins. The Bill Capen Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) was awarded to Brendan Ryan. 

Congratulations and best of luck in the future.

Joe Clark, HockomockSports.com Student Reporter, provides the recap as the FHS girls lacrosse team can't get by Concord-Carlisle in the D1 East semi-final game.

"A year ago, Franklin beat Concord-Carlisle in the D1 East Final. This year the teams met a round earlier, in the semi-final, and not only were the stakes different, but the result was as well, as Concord-Carlisle pulled off a 14-10 win in a back and forth game that featured four ties and five lead changes. 

“They knocked us on our butts last year, they physically took it to us, but I think it was a learning experience for us, we really had something to prove today and I think we did an outstanding job,” said Concord-Carlisle coach Paul Morrison. 

Franklin started out the game strong, with two good goal opportunities early, but two great saves by Natalie Slade turned the Panthers away. They were eventually able to capitalize, with goals from Kelsey MacCallum and Katie Jones giving Franklin a 2-0 advantage early on. 

But, when C-C switched to Fallon Vaughn on the draw, the Patriots went on a huge run of draw controls, taking a 9-3 advantage in that category at the end of the first half. After MacCallum put Franklin up 3-1, Concord-Carlisle went on a four-goal run from 9:08 to 7:22 in the first half."

"If you’re curious about the future of legal marijuana in Massachusetts, the liquor industry might offer some guidance. 

Like marijuana, the manufacturing, sale and transport of alcohol were once illegal. The 13-year period, known as Prohibition, ended in 1933, and there are similarities between the years that followed and what’s happening today with the rollout of adult-use marijuana, also known as recreational marijuana. 

“There are some really interesting parallels between the end of Prohibition and the legalization of marijuana,” said Stephanie Schorow, author of “Drinking Boston: A History of the City and Its Spirits.” 

Today, more than 74 Massachusetts municipalities have banned retail sales of adult-use marijuana, preventing retailers -- often referred to as “pot shops” -- from opening within city or town limits. The same thing happened after Prohibition, as cities and towns decided to remain “dry,” meaning alcohol sales were not allowed."

This internet radio show or podcast is number 145 in the series for Franklin Matters.

This recording is of the Economic Development Subcommittee meeting that was held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. The meeting began at 5:45 PM in the 3rd Floor Training Room.

The primary discussion was around how to revise the zoning bylaw to improve opportunity for residents to obtain a permit and maintain some poultry. Part of the discussion was confusion around the competing regulations. The meeting was focused on the zoning bylaw which the Town Council governs. There are also regulations from the Health Department which are separate and which may also require some changes but are created and governed by the Board of Health.

The meeting itself runs about 58 minutes. I did take notes during the meeting but the conversation was so active, I did not tweet out for fear of missing something. The audio should be clear enough to understand. Bryan Taberner was recording the notes officially for the meeting so folks usually announced themselves as they spoke.

The conclusion of the meeting was to proceed with a revision to the current zoning bylaw. It will come before the Council, get referred to the Planning Board (for two public hearings and a decision) and then come back to the Town Council for a public hearing, two readings and a decision. The first appearance before the Council might be in September.

Town Council Recap - June 6, 2018

The recap of the Town Council meeting held on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 is as follows:

• Special recognition for James Pentikis, a student at FHS, for his work helping to prepare the FY 2019 budget documents.
• The annual committee and board appointments for the new fiscal year was approved after an amendment to remove the appoint of the ZBA member. A new assessment of candidates for this position will be taken before bringing the appointment back to the Council.
• The 4th of July Committee provided an update on the schedule for the coming event. It will be bigger and better than last year as the committee has had additional time to plan. Fireworks will return this year. The police and fire departments are still working out details for crowd control as the launching site will be one of the new softball fields at FHS. A mailer is about to be sent to all residents with info on the schedule and a request for donations.  https://www.franklin4th.com/
• A long listing of legislation was approved, some for final approval and some for referral to the Planning Board. The complete listing can be found in the notes and Actions Taken document below.
• The final approvals for the remaining free cash allocations will be on the next agenda. Approx. $500,000 remains after the snow/ice shortfall was covered. This remaining money would likely be used for other items on the Capital budget not funded in the first round earlier this year.
• The proposal to address the parking problem caused by the Dean College students is also supposed to be on the scheduled for the next meeting.

FHS baseball moves on in Super 8; boys lacrosse finishes season

Via HockomockSports we share the results of the FHS spring sports action on Saturday, June 9, 2018


Boys Lacrosse = D1 South = #4 Franklin, 7 vs. #5 Xaverian, 10 – Final
– Franklin and Xaverian were tied 6-6 after three quarters but the Hawks used a 4-0 surge in the final frame to pull away from the Panthers. Eric Civetti and Matt Lazzaro each scored a pair of goals for Franklin while Chase Tanner, Jake Davis, and Nitin Chaudhury each found the back of the net once. Connor O’Rourke made 10 saves in net.


Baseball = Super 8 = #7 Franklin, 7 vs. #3 St. John’s Prep, 6 – Final
Josh Perry, Managing Editor of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:

"Franklin has come into the Super 8 with a chip on its shoulder. The last team selected for the elite tournament field, the Panthers are not out to prove that they belong but that they should be one of the teams to beat. 

After knocking off second seed Wachusett in the opening round, Franklin squared off with perennial power St. John’s Prep, the third seed, at Brockton’s Campanelli Stadium. It came down to the last out, as these games so often do, but after Jake Noviello induced a weak grounder to second, the Panthers walked away with a 7-6 victory and a spot in the semifinal. 

“We were the last team into this tournament, so we’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain,” said Franklin coach Zach Brown about playing the underdog in the Super 8. 

Bryan Woelfel closed out the win against the Mountaineers just three days earlier, but he was given the ball to start against Prep and it looked as though his start was going to be a short one after the Eagles plated three runs in the third to take the lead for the first time."

Bon Voyage concert for Electric Youth - June 16

Electric Youth (EY) 2018 returns to THE BLACK BOX on Saturday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m., offering family entertainment with music for all ages. Backed by an eight-piece band of world-class musicians, Electric Youth delivers high-energy music, featuring pop, classic rock, Broadway and country hits. 

The event is a Bon Voyage concert for Electric Youth, coming just days before the ensemble departs on June 21 for a 25-day concert tour of Austria and Italy, including a 4th of July performance at Aviano Air Force Base.
