Franklin Art Association - Meeting - May 1

The Franklin Art Association will meet on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM at the Franklin Senior Center, 10 Daniel McCahill Street in Franklin. 

Refreshments and social time will begin at 6:30 PM, followed by a short business meeting and a demonstration by Dave Kaphammer, a pastel artist whose work has received a number of awards from the Post Road Art Center, as well as the Pastel Society of New Hampshire and the Connecticut Pastel Society.

Childcare Education Workshop for Caregivers - May 9

Lifelong Community Learning has scheduled a May 9 childcare education workshop for caregivers titled “Maybe You Know This Kid?” with Donna Shea. While all professionals who work with children know that each child is a unique and wonderful person, children in our schools or extended day programs may also exhibit similar challenges.

This roundtable format workshop will draw on the expertise of all participants and explore strategies that have worked for them after they have tried “everything” for and are still bewildered by the child in their care. Attendees will be asked to submit or bring a case study for a brainstorming discussion.

The workshop fee is $25. The evening is sure to be informative and interesting in a relaxed setting with colleagues and new friends.

Taste Of ArtWeek Announces Performance Line Up

Taste of ArtWeek, a kick-off celebration to Franklin ArtWeek, will be held on Saturday, April 27 from 4:00 - 8:00 pm. The festival will include food trucks, live performances, a craft fair, and a hands-on crafts and demo tent on the Franklin Town Common, as well as a beer and wine garden and fine art exhibition at Hayward Manor, and is intended to give attendees a "taste" of what ArtWeek is all about.

The live performances are free and require no ticketing. They will be held on the gazebo stage on the Town Common, and include a variety of dance, theater, and musical entertainment. 

Dean College Dance Company

Two of the groups are comprised of professional musicians associated with Berklee College of Music: the Cape Cod Sax Quartet, a jazz ensemble, and Franklin-based folk singers Kaye Kelly and Mark Hardt. In addition, Franklin's own State Representative Jeff Roy will be playing a pop music set with members of his band, as well as his son. 

Dean College will send two groups to Taste of ArtWeek, their Theater Rep Ensemble to perform several musical theater pieces, and their well-respected Dance Company. Other dance performances will come from Feet in Motion School of Dance and the Franklin School for the Performing Arts Dance Company.

The kick-off is being organized by the Franklin Cultural Council, in partnership with Random Smile Project charity. Proceeds from the event will benefit both organizations. FHS softball, boys tennis, boys and girls lacrosse teams all post wins on Wednesday

Baseball = Mansfield @ Franklin – Postponed to Saturday, 4/13 at 6:00.

Softball = Franklin, 11 @ Mansfield, 6 – Final
– Mansfield scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to cut Franklin’s lead to just three runs (8-5) but the Panthers responded with three runs in the top of the seventh to secure the lead and a win on the road. Franklin jumped out to an 8-0 lead, with Gabby Colace (2-for-2, double, three runs, five RBI) putting the Panthers ahead with a two-run home run in the second inning. The Panthers added five runs in the second and one in the fourth for the 8-0 advantage. After Mansfield cut it to 8-5 through six innings, Franklin senior Jackie Cherry launched a three-run home run to give the Panthers breathing room. Ally Shea (double), Anna Balkus, Peyton Aronne (two RBI), and Maddy White (RBI, run) each had two hits for Franklin. Mansfield left runners on base in every inning but the fourth, including leaving the bases loaded in the first, third, and the seventh. Ella Verheggen went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the loss and the Hornets also got two hits apiece from Mary Muldoon and Sarah Cahill. Emma Roche came off the bench with her first hit of the year to start a sixth inning rally.

Boys Lacrosse = Franklin, 20 @ North Attleboro, 6 – Final
– Franklin senior Jacob Alexander won 21-of-27 faceoffs, helping the Panthers control possession in a 20-6 win on the road at North Attleboro. Matt Lazzaro paced the Panther offense with five seven goals and four assists, Jake Davis added five goals, Ben Greco chipped in with two goals and two assists, and Alexander added a pair of goals and assists in the win.

Girls Lacrosse = North Attleboro, 3 @ Franklin, 19 – Final
– Franklin notched its third win of the season with a big victory at home over visiting North Attleboro. Annie Walsh led the way with five goals and two assists while Kelsey MacCallum scored six goals with one helper. Franklin coach Kristin Igoe Guarino said Hailey Toolin had a strong day in the midfield and on defense with three draw controls.

Boys Tennis = Franklin, 3 @ Mansfield, 2 – Final
– Franklin swept doubles play and earned one more win in singles action to edge Mansfield at Memorial Park. Rohan Herur was the lone singles winner for the Panthers, earning a 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles. The team of senior Saketh Saripalli and freshman Vayshnav Malhotra won 6-0, 6-2 at first doubles and juniors Shoyaib Shaik and Shoumik Sompally prevailed 7-6 (3), 7-5 at second doubles. Mansfield’s Luke Nickerson won 7-5, 6-1 at first singles and Nilay Pangrekar scored a 6-0, 6-4 win at third singles.

Girls Tennis = Mansfield, 5 @ Franklin, 0 – Final
– Mansfield picked up its second win of the season with a sweep on the road at Franklin. Senior Lizzy Elsner didn’t lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles, freshman Kate Martin won 6-1, 7-5 at second singles, and sophomore Aryana Khosravani earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles. The team of senior Hannah Podolske and sophomore Alex Burnham won 6-1, 6-2 at first doubles while junior Tori Detch and sophomore Alex Wendland prevailed 7-5, 6-1 at second doubles.

School budget cuts proposed - Read the details

From the Superintendent's memo to the School Committee on reducing the proposed school budget by $2.3M.

"The School Committee adopted a budget of $66,826,115 on March 12, 2019, which represents a 5.68% increase over FY 19. The FY 2020 fiscal forecast, however, does not support this budget and it is anticipated that the School Committee will need to reduce it. Figures available to us at this time project an increased allocation from the Town amounting to $1,265,000, which represents only a 2% increase over FY 2019. This leaves a shortfall of $2,326,115 based upon the adopted budget. 

A series of administrative team meetings and budget subcommittee meetings have occurred within the past few weeks to develop a proposed list of budget cuts (included in the packet), which I reluctantly put forward to the School Committee for consideration. In framing this list, the Administrative Team and Budget Subcommittee applied a framework to consider items that would have the least impact on students in the classroom. This was a very difficult task, given the direct relationship of the school department’s budget to a student’s classroom experience. 

The School Committee will have an opportunity to discuss these items on April 9 and April 23, 2019. I will ask the School Committee to adopt a revised budget on April 23, 2019 that includes budget reductions in advance of the Thursday, April 25, 2019, Finance Committee meeting, being held in advance of the Town Budget Hearing, scheduled for May 22 and May 23, 2019."

Marathon Monday: Commuter Rail - Special Pass announced

On Monday, April 15, the Commuter Rail is offering a special $15 Marathon Pass valid for all-day, unlimited travel on all Commuter Rail lines through all zones.

This special $15 Marathon Pass is available for purchase through April 15 on the mTicket app and Thursday, April 11, through April 15 from ticket offices at North, South, and Back Bay Stations. 

The $15 Marathon Pass is also available onboard trains via cash or credit card on April 15 only.
