“We need to be inclusive in this process and hear from everyone”

From the Milford Daily News, articles of interest for Franklin:

"School officials are preparing to take a look at whether the Davis Thayer Elementary School in the town center should be closed.

The School Committee voted unanimously on Tuesday to authorize the district to hire an outside consultant who will study whether it would make sense to shutter the school. Superintendent Sara Ahern made the recommendation to members, pointing to the building’s age and design and the district’s decreasing student population.

“This is more than just a building. This is community - this is an emotional experience,” said Chairwoman Anne Bergen, who once served as Davis Thayer’s principal. “We need to be inclusive in this process and hear from everyone.”

Ahern said a consultant could help the district understand the demographic projections in terms of population, mobility and movement around town. She said she currently does not know how much the consultant would cost, but will return to the board with an estimate."

FHS golf team posts win on Tuesday

Via HockomockSports.com we share the results of the FHS fall sports action on Tuesday, Sep 10, 2019

Golf = Oliver Ames, 167 @ Franklin, 161 – Final
– Franklin junior Jack Paterson earned medalist honors, carding a low round of 38 to lead the Panthers to a tight win over Oliver Ames. Brian Sandham added a 40 and Sean Connolly shot a 41 for the Panthers. Tate Hadges led Oliver Ames with a team-low round of 40.

Girls soccer = King Philip, 1 @ Franklin, 0 – Final
Ryan Lanigan, founder and Editor-in-Chief of HockomockSports.com, provides the game recap:
"The Franklin girls soccer team put on a nearly flawless defensive performance against visiting King Philip on Tuesday afternoon.

But the potent Warriors’ offense only needs one chance to punish teams.

Such was the case at Pisini Field as senior Chloe Layne scored inside the opening 10 minutes, the 100th point of her career, and the Warriors walked away with a hard-earned 1-0 decision over the Panthers.

While King Philip’s lone goal came early, the Warriors had chances throughout the game that were either thwarted by the Panthers’ defense or denied by senior goalie Bre Atwood."

"we are encouraged to think that we will have identified a real interest"

From Wicked Local Franklin, an article of interest:

With a big town election looming, local civically minded residents are gearing up to host a program aimed at giving people an insider’s look at town government.

The “How Your Town Government Works” program is set for Wednesday, Sept. 25, 7-8:30 p.m., at THE BLACK BOX, 15. W. Central St., Franklin.

While sponsored by the Franklin Democratic Town Committee (FDTC), the organizers are quick to point out the program is completely non-partisan and non-political; rather, they describe it as a public service program.

Members of the committee include Chairman Karen Landers, Herb and Paula Gross, and Colin and Sue Cass.

“We were one of several subcommittees set up by the FDTC to plan activities for the year. The idea for this forum came from Paula, who has lived in Franklin for a few years and realized that she knew very little about Franklin’s government,” said committee member Sue Cass. “We agreed that this lack of information was probably shared by many residents and, since this is an election year, we thought an educational forum about the government would be timely.”

b. Authorization for Further Analysis

policy describes process to examine school buildings
engage in a closing study for Davis Thayer
would occur over time to examine all the components

1 - age and design of building
security and safety concerns, features not found in modern buildings
heat in August was a challenge, A/C units brought in but electrical power was insufficient
not universally accessible as required, accommodations difficult to put in place

2 - overall enrollment projects down
this is a study so we would engage more deeply into the future aside from birth rates

3 - economic efficiency across the district

taking time to be thoughtful and deliberate
engaging with Davis Thayer community and the larger Franklin community
also to engage an outside consultant to provide

Scofield
this memo does not say it is closing, proposal is for further analysis
elevator at DT was on capital improvement list

Feeley
what is the consultant to do?
the consultant to provide some assitance with demographic population and movement around town; fresh eyes and an outside perspective
we have amazing people who work for the schools, this is a little beyond our scope of practice; we can balance the outside with our prospective and the needs/wants of the school community

what is the expected budget for outside consultant?
we need to do a scope of work and come back with some estimates
this is only the authorization for the study

meetings scheduled for Thursday, 10 AM here at Chambers, later at 6 PM at the DT library

this is more than just a building, it is a community
anyone who thinks this is an easy consideration, is not thinking

we are only voting to authorize the study

- include the town as it would include more than just DT

I recommend authorization for further analysis of the Davis Thayer Elementary School through a comprehensive closing study as discussed.

motion to approve, seconded, passed 7-0
