FHS teams post wins in field hockey, volleyball, and both girls and boys cross country

** Field Hockey = King Philip, 0 @ Franklin, 2 – Final
– Franklin took the lead just past the 20-minute mark of the first half and doubled its lead early in the second half to pick up a win over visiting King Philip. With the win, the Panthers move within one point of clinching a share and two points from clinching the division crown. Amanda Lewandowski scored in the 21st minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Freshman Kaitlyn Carney finished off a feed from Maeve Ledwith just under four minutes into the second half to make it 2-0. Neilee Hess made three saves in the win. King Philip goalie Makenzie Manning kept the Warriors in the game with 18 saves. Senior Charlotte Colella, junior Alli Beltramini, and sophomore Molly Piller all played well defensively for the Warriors.

** Boys Cross Country
Attleboro, 32 @ Franklin, 19 – Final – Franklin had four of the first five runners to earn a win over Attleboro and finish 5-0 in league action, clinching the Kelley-Rex division title for the third straight season. Senior Tyler Brogan earned another win, clocking in at 16:45. Nicholas Calitri was second overall, finishing one second later at 16:46.

Attleboro, 37 @ Franklin, 24 – Final – Attleboro earned first and third place but Franklin used its depth to claim 10 of the top 12 spots to earn the win and clinch a share of the Kelley-Rex title with a 4-1 mark. Attleboro junior Kelly Neuendorf won the race in 21:02 while Franklin senior Sarah Giuliano took second, crossing the finish line two seconds later.

"Franklin looked like it was on its way to a three-set sweep of visiting King Philip in a battle of the top two teams in the Kelley-Rex division.

The Warriors wouldn’t go quietly though, putting their best performance forth and winning the third set to grab momentum and put the pressure on the hosts.

But the Panthers responded well, pulling away after a tight start to the fourth set to earn a 3-1 (25-17, 25-12, 22-25, 25-16) win and a regular season sweep over King Philip.

With the win, Franklin moves into a first-place tie atop the division with the Warriors with four league games left apiece"

House passes college closure bill Earlier this month, I took the House floor as Chair of the Higher Education Committee to advance a bill that will improve financial stability in higher education. Designed as a response to the closing of Mt. Ida College in 2018, and a wave of other higher education closures, the legislation requires schools to post financial information online in a publicly accessible fashion, undergo regular budgetary screening, alert state officials if they face imminent closure, and more. The new accountability measures will foster the resilience of our institutions of higher learning and ensure that our students have access to the opportunities they are counting on. This legislation supports and strengthens our higher education system and these vital engines of opportunity, and in so doing, protects the interests of students and families. I was proud to stand up for students, their families and the education community. When students invest in their future, they deserve to know that their college stands on a solid foundation. The tour began in North Adams at the beautiful Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, tucked in the Berkshires in northwestern Massachusetts. Over the next several months, the Committee will be visiting each campus to get a first-hand look at the facilities, meet with faculty and administrators, and hear from students about their experiences. The tours will include meetings with campus leaders, faculty, staff, and students at each of the institutions. So far, we have also toured Berkshire Community College, UMass Amherst, and Greenfield Community College. On Friday, October 18 we head to Salem State University and North Shore Community College. "It's ambitious, but when appointed to chair this committee, one of the very first things I did was to print out a map of the 29 public institutions in the Commonwealth to plan the trip," said Representative Roy. "We want to experience what life is like on these campuses which should provide a better context for the budget and legislative decisions we make. And the tours will provide an up close and personal view of each campus to give us a better perspective on the issues faced by those in each academic community." 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Pie Sale at St. Mary’s Church

The Knights of Columbus, Sacred Heart Council 1847, Franklin is running its 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Pie Sale at St. Mary’s Church in Franklin.

Flyers and order forms will be passed out after the Masses on Saturday, and after Masses on Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20. The Knights will collect orders and accept payment after the Masses on Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 26 and 27, and Nov. 2 and 3 at the back of St. Mary’s church.

Pies will be made by the Mann’s Orchards and Bakery. Flavors will be the same as last year: Apple, pecan, pumpkin and blueberry. Pies are $15.

Franklin Art Association’s Showcase through Nov 10

The Franklin Art Association’s Showcase of original fine art by FAA members is currently on display at The Morini Gallery, 377 N. Main Street, Mansfield, Massachusetts, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday through Friday until November 10, 2019.

The show, which is free and open to the public, features over thirty pieces of original art in a juried show. Award-winning artwork includes: 

• First Place for Lisa G. Bailey’s watercolor, “Pedaling Memories;” 
• Second Place for Margaret Munson’s photograph, “Chihuly Glass Below Seattle Space Needle;” 
• Third Place for Dongling Su’s photograph, “Spring in a Small Village;” 
• Honorable Mentions for Susan Plume’s watercolor, “Pumpkin;” Christine Toubeau’s acrylic, “Future Awash;” and Margaret Munson’s pastel, “Morning Ray of Hope 2.”

Theater patrons for the Mass Music & Arts Society Black Box Theater & Morini Gallery (https://mmas.org/) are also able to enjoy the showcase before show performances and during intermission.

St John's Pumpkin Patch - Oct 18 to 31

The St John's Pumpkin Patch will open this Friday, October 18 and will be open every day through Halloween from 11:30 AM - 7:30 PM.

Guess how many candy corn are in the jar at the checkout desk, and win a Halloween basket, provided by Girl Scout Troop 82533.

Storytime at the Patch: Brian Poirier, the leader of Cub Scout Pack 126 will read a variety of Halloween stories from Noon-1 PM this Friday and Saturday.

Thanks to our scouting friends for adding extra fun and sweetness to our patch.

In the Globe: "Familiarity has been key to the success of these dynamic passing duos"

In case you missed it, the Boston Globe has an article on football friendship for quarterback and receiver duos. One of the pairs in the article is Franklin's own Thomas Gasbarro and Jake Davis

"The same can be said for Franklin’s Thomas Gasbarro and Jake Davis, who began playing Pop Warner together in fifth grade.

As a junior, Davis caught five passes and two touchdowns from all-scholastic Nick Gordon, but this year, he’s leading D1 with seven touchdowns and has 387 yards on 23 receptions through four games.

While that spike in production can be attributed to increased opportunity, the fact that Davis is catching passes from old friend Thomas Gasbarro can’t be overlooked.

The best friends rode that momentum into a successful freshman campaign, then teamed up in the defensive secondary the past two years for the Panthers varsity squad."

Franklin Demonstration - Saturday, Oct 19

The Franklin Democrats are planning to demonstrate against the Trump administration again on Saturday, October 19, from 10:00 to 12:00 o'clock. They will meet in front of Piezoni's Restaurant, 150 Emmons Street, at the intersection of Emmons and West Central.

As before, participants can make signs or just show up.

Franklin Democrats plan a similar protest on Nov 16.
