B. Technology Presentation

(to be added later)

https://www.slideshare.net/shersteve/technology-presentation-2112020

did start year with a bumpy road for wifi access points at the high school
new upgrade to the management system for the wifi access points unfortunately wasn't able to manage the older units at the high school
took time to roll the high school access points back to the old system (i.e. Dec)
combination of problems inside resulted to the end user as one problem, only 2 wifi reports in last 2 weeks (and not really wifi)

management software was being tested at the elementary schools as the school year ended
it was the amount of users that drove to the problem

Q - Do you have a ball park for how much technology money would be required to keep current with the technology life cycle?
A - The answer is available, we have started looking at a technology stabilization account to help address this long term.

Franklin Education Foundation (FEF) awards 17 grants totaling $30K

The Franklin Education Foundation (FEF) has awarded 17 grants totaling $30,904 for 2020 to teachers in the Franklin Public School (FPS) system. A committee composed of FEF representatives and FPS staff evaluated 28 proposals through a blind review process and selected the awardees. Final approval was made by the full FEF board at its December meeting.

“Consideration was given to need, innovation, impact, and integration with other school programs when selecting applications for funding. These 17 grants will provide needed funding for innovative programs at the elementary, middle, and high schools that would not otherwise be possible”, stated Kit Brady, Ph.D., Chair of the FEF Grant Review Committee.

This year’s recipients at the elementary school level are (lead applicant listed first):

  • Davis Thayer Elementary School – Lauren Diez and Jennifer Auld, Digital and hands-on resources to enhance school science curriculum;

Since its inception in 1997, the FEF has awarded approximately $430,000 in grants to FPS. Yearly fundraisers such as November’s Harlem Wizards basketball game as well as an annual fund campaign provide much appreciated support from businesses, families, and organizations for the FEF grants.

"pleased to announce that Mr. Paul Peri will be the next principal of Weston High School"

Mr Peri will be missed in Franklin. Dr. Midge Connolly, Superintendent of Weston (MA) schools made the announcement Monday.
"Dear Weston Community,

I am pleased to announce that Mr. Paul Peri will be the next principal of Weston High School. Mr. Peri will begin officially on July 1, 2020 but will be working with us throughout the spring as he transitions to Weston from Franklin, a community that he has been with for many years. Mr. Peri began his career in Franklin as a middle school teacher and then became the vice principal and principal of Remington Middle School. He then served as principal at Franklin High School for the past six years. Mr. Peri earned his undergraduate degree from Muhlenberg College and his Master’s degree in Education Administration from Endicott College.

During his time at Franklin High School, Mr. Peri has focused on improving the school culture and climate for staff, students, and parents/guardians. He has done so through increased love, laughter, care, support, communication and celebration, as great efforts have been made to increase school spirit and staff morale. FM #203 - Community Preservation Act - Feb 5, 2020 (audio)

FM #203

This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 203 in the series, that we are now producing in collaboration with Franklin.TV and Franklin Public Radio (wfpr.fm).

Sharing this segment of the Town Council meeting on Feb 5, 2020 as the Community Preservation Act will likely be one of the prime subjects of discussion until November 2020.

Town Council Chair Tom Mercer opens this segment of the Council meeting asking Town Administrator Jamie Hellen to lead the Community Preservation Act discussion and overview. It was a sense of deja vu for Jamie as he realized that he had come to Franklin on November 7, 2001 to do the same thing early in his career. There were a few good stories to share as he recounted from the minutes of that Town Council meeting almost 20 years ago.

The presentation thus set in time perspective did proceed. A link to the presentation doc used is included in the show notes. After the Town Council had the opportunity to ask questions, members of the audience also had their turn to raise questions or comments. Each individual introduced themselves as they came forward to speak.

At the end of the discussion, Tom asks Jamie to start working on the details to enable this to come back before the Council, and eventually before the community, for a vote at the November 2020 election.

Without further ado, here is the recording for the meeting segment on the CPA approx 65 minutes  https://www.hipcast.com/podcast/HDKcCY9X

Soccer For Smiles Tournament - Registration open for February vacation week

After a tragic earthquake in Haiti in 2010, a young Franklin boy created the Hope for Haiti soccer tournament motivated to do something to help. A soccer tournament was developed over February's school vacation that provided an opportunity for soccer players to have a lot of fun in friendly competition. The event raised a significant amount of money that was donated to the relief fund for Haiti. The Soccer For Smiles tournament was born! A way for kids to help others in their own community!

To date, the tournaments have raised over $47,000! The tournaments have focused on local charities with the majority of monies raised going toward the Random Smile Project. The group has also supported Team Isabella and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Each year the tournament has grown in participation and donations. The team of students has grown and changed as older team members move on to college and new students join in the effort.

Please join in this year! Kids playing kids raising money for charities, no coaches, no adults (other than the supervising staff of Franklin Soccer School), just kids having some fun over February vacation for a good cause. Grab some friends and make a team or just register on your own and join a team!

Here is the expected schedule during February vacation (Feb 17 - Feb 21) (which may adjust slightly based on teams/players registered):
