So many great things are happening in town and at the Franklin Senior Center!  We look forward to seeing you all in person and online.  Please remember:

Upon entering the Franklin Senior Center you will be required to scan or sign in, fill out a COVID questionnaire, have your temperature taken, wear a properly fitting mask over your mouth and nose at ALL times and remain socially distanced.  We greatly appreciate your assistance in following these rules so we can continue to move forward with our scaled and mindful opening based on the rules we MUST follow!  Please do NOT move chairs or remove signs marking appropriate social distancing.

The rules are in place for legal and safety reasons.  Breaking them makes you a fun ruiner and we will ask you to leave and ban you until the mask requirements are lifted by our Board Of Health for our building if you refuse. Seriously don't be "that person" that gets us shut down for everyone!

Stay safe, kind and responsible!

Ariel

Free to a good home: Two Rhode Island lighthouses - The Boston Globe

"They have sweeping ocean views and historic significance, but after decades of service, the Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown and Watch Hill Lighthouse in Westerly are no longer needed by the US Coast Guard.

The two lighthouses are being offered for free to qualifying public entities, the General Services Administration announced Thursday.

Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, those who can apply to own the lighthouses at no cost include government agencies, nonprofits, educational agencies or community development organizations, or groups dedicated to parks and recreation and cultural or historic preservation."

NEW! Nonprofit Management Certificate for Practitioners

METROWEST NONPROFIT NETWORK ANNOUNCES

NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE

FOR PRACTITIONERS

For Immediate Release: Framingham, MA

May 10, 2021 – MetroWest Nonprofit Network (MWNN), in partnership with Framingham State University (FSU), is pleased to announce a new course offering: Nonprofit Management Certificate for Practitioners. This 12-week online course set to launch on September 24, 2021, is designed for individuals who are interested in furthering their knowledge and skills as nonprofit leaders, aspiring and emerging leaders, mid-level nonprofit managers, and individuals seeking to change careers and enter the nonprofit sector. The program, developed after a three-year planning process that involved feedback from nonprofit leaders, funders, community organizations, educators, and students has two key goals: providing future leaders with the practical skills needed to lead effective organizations and actively supporting individuals with diverse identities and experiences who are interested in a pathway to nonprofit leadership.

"Framingham State University is proud to partner with the MetroWest Nonprofit Network to diversify and expand nonprofit leadership in our region," said Dr. Constanza Cabello, Vice President of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement at Framingham State University. "It is critical that the face of leadership reflect the increasingly diverse population in MetroWest. We look forward to giving students the skills, tools, and network to lead in their organizations and in the community."

"We are thrilled to be able to offer this unique program to our community," said Sarah Baldiga, Chair of the MWNN and Co-founder and Executive Director of the Rise Above Foundation. "The Certificate program will amplify the impact of our MetroWest nonprofits by strengthening the skills of the passionate people who make them run. Our goal through this program is to give participants the chance to hear and learn from people in the field and to help shape the next generation of nonprofit leaders."

The certificate program will focus on five theme areas: Nonprofit Fundamentals, Organizations and People, Finances and Fundraising, Communications and Marketing, Evaluations and Impact, and Leading through Change. Program faculty bring a wide range of expertise and lived experiences to the program. Students will have an opportunity to build a professional network of mentors and colleagues that will support them beyond the completion of the program.

"This program builds on MWNN's thirty years of experience strengthening nonprofit leaders, building connections, and nurturing collaborations," said Anna Cross, Executive Director of MWNN. "One of the most important lessons we have learned during the pandemic is that nonprofit organizations play a critical role in identifying and responding to issues of equity, racial, economic, and social justice. We consider it an honor and an obligation to provide opportunities for future leaders to gain the skills, tools, and networks they need to meet the challenge of building a just and equitable world."

About MetroWest Nonprofit Network

MWNN was created in 1991, in response to the need to bring MetroWest nonprofits together to share ideas, resources, and professional development opportunities. Today, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, MWNN continues to offer the services and support that MetroWest nonprofits are seeking; opportunities for collaboration, connections to the expertise of their colleagues throughout the region, and access to resources that support and strengthen their organizations. Boston Globe: "A pop-up gallery fills a vacant spot in Providence with joy and light"

Franklin received a grant to create a Pop Shop downtown. From the Boston Globe we share what Providence has done with a popup shop as an example.

"During the pandemic, downtown Providence was living in its own shadow, with empty storefronts and restaurants that were “hibernating” for the winter or closed for good. But these days, cobblestone-lined Westminster Street has started to feel alive again, thanks in part to three Rhode Island-based women and their new pop-up art gallery, “Reflection-Delight.”

Curated by Sheryl Kopel, a freelance artist manager and facilitator, the temporary exhibition has filled 233 Westminster St., a space that is usually vacant. She’s chosen two artists whose styles are vastly different, but whose work looks to project “joy and inner strength that fly in the face of darker trends in the wider world.”

FM #540 - Virtual Person On Street - Brian Brannan - 05/03/21 (audio)

FM #540 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 540 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares my conversation with Brian Brannan. My first “person on the street” interview. Although we did do this via a virtual conference bridge to adhere to the ‘social distancing’ requirements of this pandemic period.

Brian and I get to know each other as we explore his work, Quality Assurance testing for Terrible Posture Games. Yes, this was a fun adventure. You will likely learn a thing or two. I did. Especially on how ‘gamer’ is not a good term to use these days.

The recording runs about 32 minutes, so let’s listen to my conversation with Brian

FHS baseball and both tennis teams post wins on Thursday

From HockomockSports.com and Twitter we share the FHS spring sports results:

Baseball = North Attleboro, 0 @ Franklin, 10 – Final (5 Inn.)
– Franklin’s Jacob Jette allowed just one hit in a five-inning complete game effort while the Panthers’ offense had its second double-digit scoring effort in the last three games. Jette issued three walks while striking out eight to earn the win. Jack Marino and Ben Jarosz each went 1-for-2 for the Panthers, driving in a pair of runs while scoring once themselves. Chris Goode added an RBI and two runs scored while freshman Henry DiGiorgio had a hit, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. North’s Gavin Wells came in with a pinch-hit to break up the no-hitter in the top of the fifth.

Softball = Franklin, 1 @ North Attleboro, 13 – Final (6 Inn.)
– Zoey McDonough had her second strong start of the season, picking up the win with six strikeouts and just one walk over six innings. McDonough also showed resilience by pitching well with runners on base. Recap - School Committee meeting - FHS highlights; school choice vote, acceptable use policy moved to 2nd reading

Quick Recap:
  • Student enrollment is a driver for budget. Student Opportunity Act (SOA) is not a major help for Franklin's budget. Franklin will see no major additional funding (we already get more than the formula would permit). Franklin will see some transportation and circuit breaker funds to help with those expenses. The structural deficit will not be addressed by the to be developed facility 'master plan' which may include redistricting. SOA will force the Town portion of school budget funding to increase each year. This will remain an issue for the school budget (and Town) until addressed
  • Town Council budget hearings scheduled for May 26 and 27 to approve FY 2022 budget.
  • FHS Principal Josh Hanna provided an overview of the high school experience this year and updates on the year end including graduation plans
  • Acceptable use police moved to second reading. Approval for a FHS revolving fund account granted. School choice will not be allowed for next year (this continues the practice in place for many years)
