Panther TV - Panther News for May 21 (video)

Panther News, May 21, 2021 = Produced by the Franklin High School TV Production classes

FHS baseball, softball, boys tennis, and wrestling teams all post wins

From HockomockSports.com and Twitter we share the FHS spring sports results:

Baseball = Franklin, 8 @ Oliver Ames, 0 – Final
– Holding a 2-0 lead through three innings, Franklin tacked on two runs in each the fourth, fifth, and the seventh innings to leave Frothingham Park with an 8-0 win. Ethan Voellmicke (4.2 IP, two hit, no walks, five strikeouts) and James Kuczmiec combined for the shutout on the mound for the Panthers. Chris Goode (two hits) and Eisig Chin (three hits, three runs) each hit a triple in the win, Ryan Gerety added two hits, two RBI, and a run scored, and Luc Boudreau drove in a pair of runs and scored twice for the Panthers. Christian Papasodero allowed just two earned runs in five innings of work for the Tigers.

Softball = Oliver Ames, 14 @ Franklin, 16 – Final
– Franklin rallied from nine runs down to build a seven-run lead, but then had to hold on as OA stormed back and brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the seventh. It was all OA early. The Tigers took the lead in the first on an RBI single by Grace Simone and then extended the lead to 4-0 heading into the fourth. In the fourth, the Tigers scored five times to break the game open. Taylor Lake had a bases-clearing double and Caitlin Miller brought in a run with a single. Franklin got one back in the fourth, but it still looked like a comfortable advantage for the Tigers until the Panthers exploded for 15 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Molly Collins drove in five runs, including a bases loaded triple, in the inning and Lauren Cote had a couple of hits and three RBI during the rally. From 9-0 down, the Panthers now held a 16-9 lead. OA didn’t go quietly. In the top of the seventh, OA scored five times, including two more RBI for Lake and had runners at first and second with two outs. Gabby Colace was able to turn a grounder in the hole at short into a force at third to seal a wild win for the Panthers.

Boston Globe: "On unemployment in Mass.? You’ll soon be required to look for a job"

"As the state edges closer to a full reopening, the Baker administration on Thursday announced it will reinstate a requirement that anyone receiving unemployment benefits actively search for a job, effective June 15.

Searching for a job was long required of those on unemployment until the pandemic struck, forcing the closings of many businesses and workplaces and wiping out hundreds of thousands of jobs.

The requirement was dropped last spring in recognition to how futile it would be as the state continued to lose jobs.

But the picture has improved since a year ago, when more than 500,000 people were on unemployment."

Dark Sky Park in Maine, first in New England

"A vast expanse of forestland in Maine was designated New England’s first “dark sky park” this week.

A dark sky park is defined as “a land possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment,” according to the International Dark-Sky Association. The North Maine Woods, where the designated area is located, is one of the darkest areas on the East Coast. The property is owned by the Appalachian Mountain Club.

“While the [Appalachian Mountain Club] North Maine Woods region retains its rugged character defined by the enormity of the forest here, it stands on the advancing edge of development that brings with it the end of the dark night sky,” said Dark Sky Park Superintendent Steve Tatko. “I see this designation as a way for the people of this area to re-envision the immense importance of this forest in a way that makes tangible the intrinsic beauty of the night sky we all cherish.”

Recap: Finance Committee - further discussion required on draft debt stabilization policy

Quick Recap:

  • Mostly discussion on the debt stabilization policy outline (no specific text draft yet). There was Q&A and a healthy discussion. Motion ultimately made to table the policy for additional discussion in next meeting. There is no rush to decide now; motion to table to June 16 meeting, passes 9-0
  • With the Senate budget now released, Franklin actually is scheduled to lose about $23K from the House budget, however, once Senate makes their budget final, House and Senate will need to reconcile before sending it to the Governor.
  • Discussion for June 16 meeting, scheduled for 6 PM start (again before the Town Council at 7) means that the debt stabilization topic is practically the only one for the time allotted.

  • Meeting opens, full set of membership for this session in Council Chambers. Motion to approve, all 4 sets of minutes for the hearings, seconded, passes 9-0 Moving to budget stabilization policy. #fincom0519
  • Mostly discussion on the policy, Q&A, good discussion hard to recap until it is done. #fincom0519
  • Motion to amend, withdrawn. No motions currently. Being tabled for additional discussion as no rush to decide now; motion to table, seconded, amended motion to table to June 16 meeting and review some text, seconded, passes 9-0 #fincom0519
  • At next meeting masks not required. #fincom0519 Senate proposed budget is $23k less for FY22 than FY21. This is a structural issue and will be seen regularly (Franklin will need to increase support for school budget). For next 5-10 years likely to be similar.
  • Budget stabilization likely only topic for Jun 16. Motion to adjourn, passes 9-0 #fincom0519

350 Mass Greater Franklin Node, meeting - Thursday, May 20

The Greater Franklin Node of 350 Massachusetts will meet this week, Thursday, May 20th, at 7:00 pm.  Here is the Zoom link:

Zoom link for the meeting, May 20, 7:00 pm.
Join on Zoom.
Meeting ID: 544 734 092
Password: 350ma
Audio by phone: +1 646 876 9923

Residents of Franklin and nearby cities and towns are welcome to attend.

Meeting Agenda: We will discuss developments nationally, statewide, and locally. We were one of several 350 Mass nodes that held protests against the financing of the Line 3 pipeline in Minnesota; we will consider future actions. We will review the bills endorsed by 350 Mass for the current MA legislative session, and lobbying actions we can take collectively and individually. We will continue our conversation about engaging our region in climate activism: working with residents and like-minded organizations, and advocating for actions and programs by our municipalities, including Franklin. Please join us to learn and contribute.

350 Massachusetts for a Better Future (https://350mass.betterfutureproject.org/) is building a powerful statewide social movement to confront the climate crisis, hold our politicians accountable and undermine the destructive influence of the fossil fuel industry. Our name comes from 350 parts per million, the safe level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
350 Mass is made up of several local volunteer-led chapters we call "nodes" around the state that carry out both municipal-level and statewide campaigns, coordinated by a Statewide Steering Team (SST). The Greater Franklin Node includes Franklin and close to twenty nearby communities. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month, at 7:00 pm.
