Common Gardening Problems
Come learn about the most common problems, pests, and diseases that gardeners face, and how to combat them! This workshop is designed for all levels.

From tomato horn worms, to chipmunks, to powdery mildew. We will go through the major obstacles that gardeners will likely face.

At the end of the lesson, opportunity will also be given to discuss personal gardening hurdles. This will be an open-format discussion to allow not only for Farmer Ali to assist in diagnosis, but also your fellow gardeners. Ali's perspective is only one, and she understands the value of a Socratic workshop. The ability to use each other as a resource is invaluable, and will be encouraged in this workshop! (To those who are new to gardening, you are more than welcome to attend regardless of whether or not you can provide input to other attendees. Ask questions, and listen to others - one day you will be giving advice too!)

There are many approaches to combatting pests and diseases, and those using different practices are ABSOLUTELY still welcome to attend, but this workshop will exclusively focus on organic, sustainable, and regenerative practices.

Cost: $55 per person

Time: April 29th 10:00am-12:00pm

Compost pick-up will be right after, so you can kill two birds with one stone! 😊

A "Franklin For All" discussion on buildable & affordable - 04/12/23 (audio)

FM #974 = This is the Franklin Matters radio show, number 974 in the series.

This session of the radio show shares the audio recording of the housing and zoning discussion with Brad Chafee, Melanie Hamblen, Cobi Frongillo and Joe Halligan. We were all in the Franklin TV Studio on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.

Consider this a continuation of the downtown zoning discussion from the “Franklin For All” project which is underway with review and discussion at the Economic Development Subcommittee Plus meetings that Melanie Chairs and for which Cobi is Vice-Chair.

We were joined by Joe Halligan for this session to include his insights as a former Planning Board member, Franklin developer, and recently appointed to the Master Plan Update Committee.

The conversation centered on the numbers Joe had walked through at a prior EDC Plus meeting (Nov 2022) on the costs of combining parcels to make a buildable project. We define ‘buildable’ from a developer’s perspective to help differentiate from the two definitions of affordable (Capital A - affordable as set by Federal HUD and State calculations, and lower case “a” affordable, what someone could afford which will still vary by situation).

The recording of our conversation on zoning runs about 63 minutes. Let’s listen in. Audio file -> https://franklin-ma-matters.captivate.fm/episode/fm-974-franklin-for-all-discusses-buildable-affordable-04-12-23

Baseball = Franklin, 9 @ Catholic Memorial, 2 – Final
– Franklin senior Tyler Bellan provided an early spark offensively and classmate Alfred Mucciarone had another double-digit strikeout performance on the mound as the Panthers picked up an impressive 9-2 win at Catholic Memorial. Bellan belted a two-out three-run home run in the top of the first inning to give Franklin a lead that it never relinquished. Franklin went on to push across five runs in the fourth inning to pull away from the Knights for good. Eisig Chin (run), Henry Digiorgio (two RBI, two runs), Rex Cinelli, and Ethan DePaolo (run) each had a pair of hits in the win while Ben Jarosz knocked in three runs. Mucciarone allowed one run on four hits and no walks in six innings, striking out 11 batters for the win.

CDC simplifies COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, allows older adults and immunocompromised adults to get second dose of the updated vaccine | CDC Online Newsroom | CDC

Based upon the FDA actions announced in this release, the CDC has updated their guidance as well.

"Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration amended the emergency use authorizations (EUAs) of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 bivalent mRNA vaccines to simplify the vaccination schedule for most individuals. This action includes authorizing the current bivalent vaccines (original and omicron BA.4/BA.5 strains) to be used for all doses administered to individuals 6 months of age and older, including for an additional dose or doses for certain populations. The monovalent Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines are no longer authorized for use in the United States."

"Following FDA regulatory action, CDC has taken steps to simplify COVID-19 vaccine recommendations and allow more flexibility for people at higher risk who want the option of added protection from additional COVID-19 vaccine doses.

CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met today to discuss these COVID-19 vaccine recommendation changes, and the associated implications and implementation. Although there was no vote at this meeting, ACIP members expressed their support for these recommendations."
