A preacher's kid with a sharp pen and a fearless voice, Matthews writes songs shaped by lived experience and a deep commitment to justice, compassion, and truth-telling. She often describes herself, with humor and honesty, as the "poster child for intersectionality," and her work reflects that wide, human lens. On January 21, 2026, Crys Matthews' song "Sleeves Up" was chosen as Song of the Year at the 2026 International Folk Music Awards.
